I remember you said your daughter really screwed up your laptop. I was surprised over how much damage one person could do.
I've deleted the malware 3 times now and I think it may be back already. Fer crissake. I wish I could make it go away permanently. I don't like the prospect of having to reformat as I've never done that before.
Download SpyBot - Search & Destroy 2.9.85.5 - Scan your computer for spyware and remove it, take preemptive protection measures, repair system inconsistencies and update virus definitions on a regular basis
Although this is supposed to be good, but I've not used it
Rommy you reset the restore points on the control panel and I think its just the temp Internet files which need to be deleted. That plus the trendmicro website worked for me when I got the same sort of thing.

Thanks all. Coop, I hope you had a great birthday.
I believe DeanO has saved me. His Spybot Search and Destroy link appears to have done the trick. I noticed while it was running, McAfee popped up saying it had killed a trojan so I looked at the log and it had killed 3 of them while Spybot was running. It's also killed another this morning so I'm not sure I'm out of the woods completely.
I do have a question. McAfee removed all but 1 of the trojans. The 1 is quarantined and I don't see anywhere I can delete what's quarantined. Is it safe to leave it in there?
The main offending trojan that describes what was happening to me is Vundo. Now I'm not 100% sure I got it from Real Player as it says it's generally picked up by hitting a webpage with it. <shrugs>
"And I'm a million different people from one day to the next..."
Rom - you could probably leave it. For the record - I am not a McAfee proponent - are you paying for it? There is a better product that is actually free. Lookup AVG free antivirus.
Another thing - your user account in XP is probably running with Administrative rights, which generally is a huge risk. Let me know if you want me to explain this better.
Admin rights are needed to make critical system changes such as installing hardware and software. These rights are not needed for normal computer usage (for the most part). What can happen in this scenario is that changes can happen to your computer without you knowing it - for example, while web surfing a link on a web page could contain a virus or malware and could infect your computer.
What I recommend is that you have one account that you use when needed for installing stuf or making system changes, the account you use day to day should be given user rights only.
The realplayer issue was not one that you could have done much about - as it's technically a legit program...although the crap they push along with the media player is technically malware because it's not something you wanted.

Maybe someone can help me. My CD player will play the sounds but if I get a Web Page with sounds, it will not play through my speakers. Can't figure it out!
LionsWhoppeeCushionI'm surrounded with a strange sound after beer, burritos and watching another Lions game.
I'll start with the obvious question. Are your speakers hooked into the front of the DVD/CD player, or in the back? And, in the back, there are usually three plugs, one for speakers (the one you should be using), one for line in, and one for a microphone.
Virus problems especially Antivirus 2008 (loads of systems infected with this fun one).
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is pretty good cleaner typically you have to update manually by downloading the definition file and running the app in "safe mode".
LWC if Drew didn't hit the nail on the head also check in your volume control that you don't have the WAVE file turned down or muted while the CD sound is on.
