      • DJ, make sure you call your cable company to get a box and channels capable of outputting in HD. Chances are, your existing box does NOT do this and you likely have to pay extra for the HD channels. You can also get an antenna to get some OTA HD signals, but I don't know anything about it so I can't recommend it.

        • Good advice Deb except his plasma doesn't have an internal tuner so no OTA.

            • Deb: Thanks for the advice.

Tim: After I hook it up I will then decide if I want to go to the HDMI process for HDTV. I can buy a card/adapter for about $140.00 and install it myself-if needed.

              • I just got a 32" Sharp Aquos LCD with Comcast HD channels. It was only an extra $7/month for the HD box as opposed to Digital Cable. The picture on my screen is awesome, I'm just deciding to go HD DVD or Blu-Ray, trying to decide which media will win out.

                • Hold out till at least the 3qtr of this year to have a better feel for the winner.

With Walmart about to start production with a Chinese co. that will sell sub $300 HD-DVD players, Walmart could very well provide the swing vote as to what HD player wins the battle.

If you don't mind waiting (like I am), get yourself an affordable up-converting DVD player to tide you over. I bought a Panasonic S52 for $62 which works well for us in the mean time while others swear that the sub $100 Oppo up-converting DVD players are very good for them as well.

                  • I've been using my PS2 to play DVD's for now, I have no problem with holding out until later this year.

                      • I was using my PS2 forever until I bought the bridge unit.

The difference in picture is very noticeable despite my TV having a great upscaling engine in it.

I didn't think it would be that noticeable because the TV was supposed to be this great upconverter but when tied to a dedicated, progressive scan DVD player, it clearly likes to work with the better initial feed in converting the picture.

                        • I bought a PS3 mostly for Blu Ray. The PS3 is a few hundred cheaper than any stand-alone Blu Ray player. Unfortunately Sony hasn't hit a home run with this formula, but I think Blu Ray will get the upper hand eventually. Good advice if you have any qualms about being an early adopter and possibly getting the shaft is to sit it out like a couple of you have decided to do.

I was always told I have more dollars than sense.

                          • I'll place my bet on HDDVD. When Sony gets involved, things get too proprietary and stifled.

It's Mac vs PC, or VHS vs Beta all over again.
The only thing missing from that Marvin Jones touchdown reversal is that it wasn't a first round playoff game.

Be that as it may, through the first quarter of 2007, Blu-Ray DVDs are out-selling HD-DVDs?549,730 versus 249,451 units.

don't go blue ray, HD DVD is going to win this fight - How do I know, the porn industry is going HD DVD, that will tip the scales as it did for VHS over BETA.
