    • Define "it". What program are you using to record?

          • NEED SOME HELP! My hard drive is noisy and about to go. I bought a Seagate 160GB replacement already. Running Windows XP PRO. Is there anyway to copy the old hard drive directly to the new one? I have tried to burn all my files to CD's, but am not sure if it worked or not. This dam Windows Media is tricky to burn from.

            Any help would be appreciated.

            • DJ,

The best arrangement is to put the new drive in as the master, and the old drive as the slave.

That way, you can do it all at once, or a little at a time. My experience has been that failing drives don't always give up all their contents at once. They'll move files for a bit until the mechanics give out, then the process crashes.

If it's a slave, you can pull down the most important stuff first, a little at a time, and move on to the less important stuff.

              • Thanks ULF. Will I need to run the XP installation disk again or will it already be on the old hard drive?

                  • DJ - it's always best to do a fresh install. Windows always gets ugly with time, and you won't bring along the diseases of your past instance.

Install the new HD as the master, the old as the slave.

Assure that your BIOS boots to the CD before the hard drive, and put the Windows install CD in your drive. Tell it that you want to install it to your new HD.

                    • ULF: This new HD did not come with any cables or instruction books. So I don't know how the jumper is configured right now, or how to change it to the Master and the original one to a Slave. I assume the original HD is set for Master. There are no markings on the case to tell me what the four jumper positions are. What should I do?

                      • DJ,

You have to go to the manufacturers web site and find your model number of HD. There will be information that shows you the jumper settings.

                        • Thanks guys for the help. Am currently running "Norton Ghost Back-up". Am up to 7 CD's already-don't know how many more will be necessary. This program is definetly burning the disks.

Think I will just remove old HD and install new HD in it's place and leave the jumper where it is.

Do I start out with the XP install disks first or is that information going to be on my Norton newly burned disks?

                          Comment

                          • That pigware called Norton is probably taking up 3-4 of the CD's itself. ;)

Start with the XP install disk. Look up the jumpers for your drives. The best setting is "cable select" which will determine master and slave based on which plug they're connected to.
