  • OK, now this brings up another set of questions.

The main reason I am upgrading my hardware is because I am my own webmaster and my page is old, tired, and working on another Microsoft program they decided to abandon.

A couple of years back, it was identified that Dreamweaver would be the smart choice. At that time, the program ran a bit over $800.00.

Doing a search recently, I have found the same program available for a bit over $300.00 with a disclaimer that updates to that program will only be available on the Cloud.

I can get a cloud based subscription to Dreamweaver for $19.99 a month, and since I use photoshop to edit my photos, it would be another $19.99 per month. .........or I can pay $59.99 per month and have access to the full Adobe Suite.

I can pay someone else to do my set up but I have learned the developers do not listen to what I am looking to achieve and do not work to achieve it, they only work to put up a functioning site.

It is my understanding that if I go with the monthly subscription, I will have functionality for 90 days after I opt out with the monthly fee should I find that everything is working great and have no need to continue to pay for service updates that I am not using.

.......with that said, I also understand why Microsoft killed the other programs I have been using because they are not a continuity based revenue source.

    Suggestions?

    • MWHSG put it better than I with what is wrong with Windows 8 and the whole Ballmer firing puts a nice bow on it. That MS has to give it away is even worse...

Top - the ISO/CAB functionality is the only marginal reason I can think of that might be a reason to upgrade although I'd bet there are third party utilities for that. I haven't had any issues with bluetooth and Win 7 - IMO 7 x64 with good hardware and 8+ GB of RAM rocks.

          • Microsoft will give you $100 to buy a new PC

By Adrian Covert @CNNTech March 24, 2014: 2:41 PM ET
            NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
If you're still using Windows XP, you just won $100 from Microsoft.

The only catch is that you have to upgrade to a new Windows 8 computer.

Those who are eligible for the promotion can redeem the credit at Microsoft's online store or their retail shops -- and the fact that you still use the 13-year old Windows XP is subject to verification by Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500). The offer is good for PCs ranging in price from $599 and $2,299 and will run until June 15.
The promotion is part of Microsoft's plan to get the last remaining Windows XP users off the operating system before the April 8 end of life date. After April 8, Microsoft will no longer issue security updates to address viruses and exploits to the operating system.

The latest figures from NetMarketShare still show Windows XP pulling 30% of Windows users, though the vast majority of those are thought to be PCs from China and the enterprise space.
Windows 8 meanwhile, has recently moved past 10% market share amongst Windows users.

                Mark,

I'd build your website on Wordpress. It gives you everything you need to really shorten development time, and can be turned into a Content Management System complete with shopping and all. Best of all, it's free.

I built the front-end to my forthcoming web app with it at novobpm.com. It's just a start at this point, but as you can see, it doesn't need to look like a blogging platform at all. (That's what WP started as, but it has really evolved.)
The only thing missing from that Marvin Jones touchdown reversal is that it wasn't a first round playoff game.

                  Well that all depends.

Dreamweaver annoyed the crap out of me what little time I had the misfortune of using it. Particularly it did poorly on managing to image links locally vs. the online mirror.

NetObjects Script builder was cool - not sure if it still exists. But Perl, ASP, etc. when you get to the point where you are scripting server-side coding to generate a page on the fly - you pretty much are getting nothing useful from a WYSIWIG tool. I really like the VBA scripting environment in office products. And it is a hot-rodded Notepad with some helpful features, really.

                    Intersting, Dave.

My son (who's nickname given him by his employer is webby) also suggested Wordpress but, he does his in the blogger format.

Several months ago I signed up for Wordpress, looks like I will have to revisit it.

I appreciate your input dpatnod, but I do not know Perl and do not have the time to learn it. I quit learning computer languages after mastering Basic only to have Windows come on the market and make the time put into learning the language useless.

To "sign up" for wordpress is to go through wordpress.org, where they host your blog for you and maintain the environment. I'd imagine that you're current site is self-maintained and either self-hosted or in a shared hosting environment(?)

For your purposes, it's best to just download the WP software, install it on your server, and run it yourself (still free.)

I didn't mention the plugin library - there's about a million of them that are free to extend Wordpress to make it do just about anything you can think of.

                        • You are correct in your assumption.

Actually am purchasing another puter this week for business so, guess I am going to look into a server also and keep everything in house.
