Amazon has started their Black Friday sales and there are some great deals to be had! As you shop this holiday season, please consider using the forum's Amazon.com link (listed in the menu as "Amazon Link") to add items to your cart and purchase them. The forum gets a small commission from every item sold.

Additionally, the forum gets a "bounty" for various offers at Amazon.com. For instance, if you sign up for a 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime, the forum will earn $3. Same if you buy a Prime membership for someone else as a gift! Trying out or purchasing an Audible membership will earn the forum a few bucks. And creating an Amazon Business account will send a $15 commission our way.

If you have an Amazon Echo, you need a free trial of Amazon Music!! We will earn $3 and it's free to you!

Your personal information is completely private, I only get a list of items that were ordered/shipped via the link, no names or locations or anything. This does not cost you anything extra and it helps offset the operating costs of this forum, which include our hosting fees and the yearly registration and licensing fees.

Stay safe and well and thank you for your participation in the Forum and for your support!! --Deborah

My question is did you notice any better performance without Norton?

The last time I had a Norton product on one of my machines was in the Pentium 1 days. It was such a performance drag, and I have been biased against Norton since then. Feel only a tiny bit less opposed to McAfee. Hate em both. AVG got a little shaky a couple of years ago, but really seems to run well in the 2013 edition and after. Zonealarm... rock solid as always.

I always select the advanced / custom install and do not install the toolbars (God I hate those things), or remove the toolbar after the program is installed.

There are a couple of Antivirus vendors that have committed to staying up to date on XP, and their intrusion detection will be updated as soon as a known exploit is released. This might be a good way to mitigate your risk for awhile.
but introducing a kmart os to a classic windows user is like asking a person to switch from an automatic transmission to a manual transmission. 1 out of 10 users are ok with it.

If you run XP it is time to move to win 7, after all sales of win 7 ends after oct of this year then you will be forced to the garbage they call windows 8.

Well, have not been on the home computer yet but the work one was kind of slow yesterday but it is humming right along today.

I suspect the slowness yesterday was because AVG did a full scan and that is one of the things I disliked most about Norton was when it was doing a scan, things really dogged down.

I am going to remove the ZoneAlarm toolbars.

Kinda funny though. For some reason even though both of my machines run XP, seems there is a difference when using the same browser (I almost exclusively use Firefox). There are subtle differences in the way they appear and the way they operate. I believe they are both the same version because I do update them when notified an update is available.

8 on anything non-touch is just awful. 7 x64 is the sweet spot.

They are all going to bog down a bit when scanning. I just found Norton seems to hurt performance at all times.

                          • This machine is flying today.

Haven't been on the one at home since I did the downloads.

                            That will be remedied shortly.
