  • FREE AV such AVG and other are not bad, but typically they do not offer robust real time monitoring, or URL AV filtering, nor do they offer zero day exploit support.

In addition Microsoft released some interesting news about their free AV.

This is not a sales link so don't panic

For years, Microsoft Security Essentials (also known as Windows Defender) was one of the most powerful antivirus programs available. However, Microsoft has lessened its grasp on the program throughout the years, and its ability to perform because of this neglect...

If you stick with free AV think about a real hardware firewall for your home to go between your network and the Cable Modem or DSL modem you have. They offer gateway AV which will protect your tablet, iphone, droid, windows etc

Depending on how much you want to spend there are some really cool tablets coming out now. I almost got my wife the Windows Surface Pro 2, but we ended up getting the Dell XPS 12. At this point, I'm not sure why since she never uses the touch screen part.

I thought that smaller Dell Venue 11 looked cool too, but I wasn't sure about the keyboard.

EDIT: I'm guessing they all might be a bit more than you want to spend though.

            Yep.

Security firms have warned that XP computer will be attacked by hackers within minutes of the MS support shut down.

XP users have been warned for a long time about this coming day.

            • I know and I am replacing them.

You know what the date is that MS is abandoning that OS?

                  • I'm sure it's a concern for those who are still running XP. But it's not like on 4/8 they are suddenly cruising along and Microsoft removes their firewalls and av settings. They just won't be updated and would vulnerable to new bugs

                    • If you are running a different antivirus/firewall etc then it wouldn't be an issue, correct?
