To be fair, he is a former editor of Gizmodo. He left to start The Consumerist website, which criticizes the anti-consumer practices of corporations. So I'm not sure accusing him of hypocrisy is exactly accurate.
If I'm not mistaken your post indicated that he returned to gizmodo to write a blog for gizmodo, and that was his first blog entry in his return to gizmodo.
The fact that it is posted here http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/feature/h...rap-236310.php and prefaced with "Gizmodo editor emeritus Joel Johnson is back, and if you thought he was doling out noogies before, wait til you get a hold of his first column where he scolds you, the Giz writers, the gadget makers, and you, dear readers, for supporting the disgusting cycle of gadget whoring." Tends to make me think that he is scolding people for supporting his livelihood.
I don't like it from writers anymore than I like it from musicians.

It makes me think that, because of his extensive experiences in his chosen field, his opinion of gadget-fetishism has evolved over time. He says as much in the interview I linked to.
"To alcohol! The cause of—and solution to—all of life's problems." —Homer Simpson, 1997
Who cares? he's making his living reporting to those gadget fetishists. I guess really he's making his living writing for a "blog" for gadget fetishists about how stupid gadget fetishists are. If he would've written it at the consumerist, it wouldn't be bad. But he's berating the people paying his salary...it's douchebaggery at it's finest!

Ha! But it's still funny shit, cause they are just as he describes them.

I'm with you SLF, and I find it funny how he berated people for being drones to corporations and their next best thing lingo, but then he turn around and tell everyone to listen to his opinion and boycott these companies. If he wants you to think for yourself, why is he telling you what you should do?
"I really do hate cell phones. I really dislike people that are on them 24/7 as if they are some sort of on call doctor or corporate big wig. Can't any single person go to any store without walking around talking to someone on a cell phone just because they have such low self-esteem to think that anyone else cares why they would be alone doing something, anything."
-----------------------------I hear ya Gonz. Personally I don't want people to be able to contact me 24/7. Call my house and leave a message. If I wanna call you back I'll call you back. Contrary to that is the fact I like to be able to get ahold of people if I NEED to. There in lies the difference in opinion. I look at a cell phone as something to be used in an information relay/important/emergency type situation not to chit chat.
A couple of weeks ago my father started to drive from NH to central FL to arrive at my uncle's house for his birthday on March 17th. They intended to hit some spots along on the eastern seaboard on the way down, but had no specific itinerary. My uncle had a heart attack on Friday and died on Monday morning. We were unable to find my father until late Sunday. If he had not "checked in" which he seldom does while travelling, he may have missed seeing his brother before he died and possible missed the funeral (maybe even showing up for the "birthday party" not knowing what had happend)
Having a cell phone is a good thing, imo.

Having a cell phone is great. It is not the cell phones that are annoying, it the people that use them. Cell phones have vibrate so as not to annoy when ringing and the user always has the option to not anwser the call if they are in a place they can't talk (movies, car, etc.)
CGVT, that is a perfect example of the good uses for cell phones. Other fine uses are "Honey I'm going to be late for dinner I'm caught in a traffic jam", etc. I despise their use as idle banter, gossip, chit chat, etc. when you're out in public. Don't evenm get me started on idle chit chat when you're driving.
