Stupid cell phone world is giving me fits.
I have been on a Storm 1 for 19 months. I can upgrade now and get a two year deal. But then lose out on my N2E deal by 1 month, and I believe it is for $100, and by starting a new 2 year period it would only be $50 in the future. So it looks like I need wait a month before upgrading but I am really interested in the Droid inc. or the Droid X. One hand the Inc is smaller and uses plastic a bit more then I like on the other hand has a better interface, better software, and is extremely moddable. The X seems better built, better feature list, bigger screen, but not a fan of their interface and the ROM seems to be locked down.
But also on the Horizon is the Storm 3 and W7P phones both supposedly to be release between October and November. I own a Zune (have Zune pass) and have Xbox live gold. I like a lot of things about my Storm and while I like touch screens I really like the idea of a touch screen with true and hard to misinterpret key presses so the S1 being what will be the worst of them still has been very good for me there. So on one had with W7P I end up with a gen1 phone of a new OS from a company that probably at this moment has the worst interface and trust them doing this 180 isn't going to blow up seems risky. Then with BB you have an operating system not made for generic consumer consumption and a company not worried about giving you the best and fastest hardware because they don't feel they are competing with these Iphone type trendy smart phones.
I know technology never stops. But as a geek myself I have never been trapped on so many competing decisions ever. Usually I can make up my mind and enjoy it till it dies. But now I don't know. Tempted to go to Verizon next week and get a DX. But I know I should wait till next month. But I love the fact that I can get my email from work on my BB, even though I shouldn't be able to and none of the other guys will get me my mail. It also seems foolish not to hold out and see if W7P will be any good when it can replace my Zune and use so many services I am already using on my computers both at home and at work.Last edited by Topweasel; July 16, 2010, 09:52 AM.

New every two. Every-time you sign up for a 2 year contract you have signed up for New Every Two. They now allow Annual upgrades on 2 year deals, which re-extend the 2 year contract to 2 years from that point with pricing that reflect that (which is why the 2 year deal is only $70 less then a 1 year deal). To get people to not swap the phone every year they apply a larger discount to users that have gone at least 20 months without swapping phones. That's NE2.
Now for the longest time Verizon has had a lackluster smartphone selection. This has kept me the geek from swapping my phone every year. Luckily that leaves me grandfathered in for their $100 NE2 deal. Any contract started (which includes annual updates) after I think 9/1/2009 its $30 or $50 dependent on phone type and plan.
So I easily resisted getting the S2 because only the screen was really different. But now there has been an explosion of decent to great Smartphones (mostly Android) that have me wanting a new phone. I know I will wait till 8/17/10 for the extra $100. But know I have to figure out if I can or should wait for the Storm 3 and Windows 7 phones to hit the market, and if I can't whether I should get the Droid Incredible, or Droid X. Last but not least is even if I really like these phones, rumors are that Verizon and its friends will announce a couple LTE phones in November as well.
Arghh. Basically it comes down to me being tired of having a slow phone with no memory and wanting to upgrade. Knowing I can affordably upgrade now, but basically get free money if I wait 30 days. But still knowing its in my best interest to probably wait till mid October in hoping that enough information will be available about their Christmas season releases to tell me if its worth it to wait at least yet another month for an increased selection.

I tend to be a feature person. I would rather know my stuff does everything I could want if available then know I am being left out because my shit isn't good enough. I think that is why the angst is starting with me. Really till the Inc, I could make a case that my almost 2 year old phone was still competitive. The Evo, Inc, and X, Iphone 4 releases have really driven home the point that the S1 is getting long in the tooth.
As for Wimax. I consider it a joke. In the end I feel sorry for Sprint.
