  • I had my computer back 5 days before it crapped out completely and I lost everything. Do you think I backed anything up during those 5 days? Oh, and I think I threw out my Windows recovery disk in the move. I just have to laugh at myself.

    • Rommy, you'll probably still be able to retrieve the data from the hard drive, so hang on to it.

      • Romster - if you need help recovering your data from that drive I would be happy to help you. Would need you to send me the drive and I would then attempt to recover your data to DVD's and send it back to you.

        • That is a very generous offer Coop. My computer guy said he couldn't recover anything and wiped everything clean? He's going to attempt to reload Windows. I'll know early next week whether or not I have to buy a new computer. I'm out for a long weekend. I'm glad it's a bye week. See y'all on the flip side.

          • Rommy, I suggest you buy a new one anyway. Wait until the new ones come loaded with Win 7 though.

Agreed with Deb and Coop. If your guy said he could not recover, likely he did not have the tools to do it with. I have had files recovered from a dead computer in the past and the tools I am talking about does not require your computer to boot to be able to recover them. (Note: By tools it requires both hardware and software for recovery, not screwdrivers and pliers.) If your guy wiped the drive clean to re-install the OS, he did not do you any favors.....

              • I've had it happen a few times and I've been able to get the disk going again. My procedure is popping out the hard drive and putting it in another computer to investigate as a secondary disk.

                  • I've also managed to get some data off a damaged drive once using Linux (Knoppix) using a utility in it called Testdisk/Photorec. Bit of a trial though!

I now have windows 7 installed, a bit zippier, however , webcam and dial-up modem not working, plus TV/Capture card not working in media centre, although it does work in it's proprietry software.

                    • Knoppix works well although I've seen it not recognize some newer SATA controllers, especially on laptops. Slaving on another machine would be another way to get at it.

Rom - all may not be lost. My brother has software that can recover data even from reformatted drives. It is a longshot. PM me if you want my help.

                      • I've noticed lately the last week or so that my Windows has been downloading and installing a lot of updates. Anybody know why? I have Vista.

                        • My thinking is because they are releasing patches and updates for Windows 7...which are likely applicable to Vista.

                          • Anyone here familiar with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007? Particularly with backup and restore procs? I am trying to simulate disaster recovery and have hit a wall at the moment..

                            • Well I'm back for now. I asked dude about recovering files and he said why he couldn't but it was like listening to Charlie Brown's teacher. I didn't lose enough to care really. Some music and pics is all. Got the computer back a couple days ago and it's asking me to download genuine advantage so it can be sure I'm not using a pirated copy of Windows. Dude did not receive this message at his house. So I've gotten ahold of a good non-pirated copy and plan to attempt to reload myself later this weekend.

                              • I forgot to mention, I dropped my phone last Saturday and it died. It was old and I wanted a new one anyway, but I lost all my contacts. For nearly 4 days I had no phone or computer (except at work). I didn't mind but I'm glad to have both items back.
