  • Cleveland made it a game?

They were down 11 points the last time I checked.

The very next play after Nix launched a deep TD pass, Winston hit Jeudy for a 70-yard TD pass.

San Fransisco hasn’t done themselves any favors in their drafts lately. In the last 4 drafts they’ve only had 2 1st round picks (one was Trey Lance), 3 2nd round picks, 8 3rd round picks, 4 4th round picks. Of the 17 high rounds picks, 5 aren’t even with the team any more.

          • Winston threw his 2nd pick 6 of the game, and Denver’s up by 9 now, under a minute left.

This is the big key issue, they have played the comp pick game well but they haven't capitalized enough on those picks. And as detailed,.they gave away those picks for Lance and he did nothing for them.

we were wondering if that trade would bite them, and apparently it has caught up to them, even with the luck they had in finding Purdy with the last pick in the draft.

                    • That’s why when you decide to take an “F them picks” stance, you better be sure. The Rams did it right. They went for an established, talented QB who just needed a supporting cast. The 49ers gave away prime picks for a total unknown and it bit them hard. They were lucky Purdy turned out as good as he did.

                      • We can list the Lions injuries and Niner injuries and the Lions have more. But the Niner injuries really crippled their offense. They lost McCaffrey, Aiyuk and Jennings. That structurally damaging to their offense. Even though their offense has been pretty good. Purdy has done a lot, but he's still just a third year NFL quarterback.

It's also very hard even with the extra picks to continue to strike gold and develop players when you have a stacked roster. The currency in which to develop draft picks is always practice reps and games played. The Lions will run into this as well.

The main thing with the Niners is the Superbowl hangover. It's a real thing, it doesn't happen to every losing team but it happens to a lot of them.

Their offense may have been crippled their by injury, and maybe there’s a carryover effect on their defense; but they went from top 3 in points for and against to #16 in points for and #20 in points against.

There is no amount of comp picks to make up for using 3 firsts, a second, 2 thirds, and a fifth for essentially one player, McCaffrey. And they didn’t even get the benefit of cheap years with McCaffrey

Holmes may trade around a lot during the draft, but it’s generally low level picks to move up in higher rounds.

                          • It's the symptom of trying to win at the end of a window. McCaffrey is a great trade for them to try and win the Superbowl last year. It fell short. The Lions are were on the other side, eventually it's going to happen to them as well.

                            • The Eagles have done a good job of threading the needle on extending a window - as they’ve had to pay a bunch of money to their offensive stars, they have pivoted (mostly) to a lot of young guys on defense and they’ve hit on a bunch of those choices. So they are well positioned for the next couple of years with that balance. Bit that’s because they’ve had the picks and made a lot of good draft choices.

The Eagles have also signed/extended their guys early in the process to help them manage the cap number even on these big deals, something the Lions have looked to do as well.

                              • The Eagles have done well, but they also had a Superbowl hangover and collapsed last year. Had a 4 win year in 2020. Had a mediocre 4 year run in between super bowl appearances.

There is nothing to say this is a dip for the 49ers that can't be overcome next year. Just getting better in the red zone on both defense and offense would help.

I thought the Ravens/Eagles game was a flaw fest. Tony Romo talking how great these two offenses were and they were both struggling to put drives together.
