  • Brady’s bit how he liked to use timeouts in late half/late game situations during yesterday’s game was probably the best bit of insight he’s provided all year.

    • There was a time where you could take defenses off guard by not spiking the ball after a big gain... that time was about 10 years ago.

As for time out usage, no coach wants to be the guy raked over the coals for using their time outs too early, and running out of time just short of the goal line.

      Pretty typical risk avoidance there.

      • You just cannot get into your play that quickly as time is running down. Just spike it.

Sometimes it's like watching the two minute drills in the 80s when neither the defense or offense knew what they were doing.

        • Time matters more than the down or the timeout in those situations.

One thing that is common in these late game clock mismanagement fiascos is rookie QBs.

I know it is primarily on the coach but I am amazed at the lack of awareness from players who have played football for their entire lives.

These guys should know down and distance, they should know to move the chains rather than play hero ball.

Bo Nix got lucky as hell with a 4th down hero ball heave to the endzone to go to overtime the other day. Both QBs had plays available to them to move the sticks last night and opted to throw downfield.

I guess we are spoiled from watching veteran QBs run a two minute drill

            • I have said this before but we have seen good two minute quarterbacking going back to Stafford. That's a good 15 seasons and the Lions were shit for an awful lot of them.

Also what drives me nuts, in the second half coaches take timeouts early in the half on 1st or 2nd down to avoid 5 yard pre-snap penalties. Take the 5 yard penalty, I promise that timeout is worth more than saving timeouts.

What drive me nuts about the Packers game is O'Connell killed the game with three play action bootleg passes. That is the one pass play even the most risk averse play caller will call when trying to run out the clock. It was open all three times!

              • There was a studio commentator after the Rams game saying there were "shades of Detroit Stafford there". I was rolling my eyes. I think a lot of these guys think some magical change happened on the flight to Los Angeles after he was traded.

                • He magically landed on a better team with a real good head coach.

                  • There were shades of Detroit when he won the Superbowl, it was like watching the Lions offense when My Rams had 3 come from behind victories in the playoffs.
