  • Here's what I'll say. Ford Field isn't as loud as the Silverdome. No design is going to make up for about 15,000 more people screaming, and Ford Field is designed to balance out acoustics for concerts and stuff in a way the Silverdome wasn't. So no, Ford Field will never have that same wall of noise effect the Silverdome could.

That said, Ford Field can generate more than enough sound to fuck with opponents. The playoff berth clincher in 2011 against the Chargers, for example; the crowd was definitely making it very difficult for the Chargers to get their audibles to the rest of the team. There comes a point where more noise doesn't make it any harder to do your job on the field, and Ford Field can definitely reach that point. The Silverdome took a damn triple jump across it.

I was at the Barry Sanders goes over 2000 yards game in 1997 with 2 of my brothers and a family friend, and man, was that place loud!!

I was wishing at the time that I had earplugs to protect my hearing that day.

While that's true the Lions had some truly loud games during some of the NFC central games in the 80s and the Lions rarely had a decent team.I distinctly remember some games where Lynn Dickey couldn't hear anything. I have a clear memory of the refs actually calling a noise penalty. I tried to find something on the internet but any search brings up the 97 Jets games where the refs warned the crowd.

That's a lot of passing yards! I never knew Barry played quarterback.

I was there for that one too. That place got back rocking even after the ambulance came onto the field for Reggie Brown. That shit was terrible

You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.

              • SIlverdome was a giant concrete echo chamber. It would literally shake at times. Loudest game I was present for was a Thursday night game when they beat the Packers, Barry already had one huge TD run for like 75 yards and then busted out another for 80. It got called back on a phantom holding call, but the roof about blew off the stadium.

Ford Field is definitely hurt by the design that makes it a good venue for concerts. But I have been to games there when it gets really loud, it's just tough to compare to the dome.

                • It is nice to have those fucking Cowboys out of the playoffs. The schadenfreude is quite delicious. Fuck a bunch of Cowboy fans.

Now, if only the 49rs can knock out the packers next week...

                  • I saw a fair amount of concerts at the Dome and you definitely did not want to be in a corner mezzanine seat. Echo chamber is correct.

Loudest I ever heard that place was when Hulk Hogan slammed Andre, holy shit was that loud. The funniest thing about that Wrestlemania III is that the true attendance of that event is hotly debated. Vince claimed 93k, Dave Meltzer has written proof of 78k.

Yep. Unless you were down on the field for a concert, the sound was terrible. I never went to a football game, and I damn sure wasn't going to go to see Westlemania, but I saw a bunch of concerts there too. It was a shitty place for a concert, but the 70s was the era of big acts in big venues and the Superdome had a lot of them

                      • My favorite game going to the Silverdome was the Thanksgiving Day game in 1997, when Barry had three TDs and the Lions beat up the Bears 55-20.

                          • NFC East turned out to be such a joke. Ugh, Cowboys. Disappointing. I actually thought their offense was good.
49ers without Warner and Bosa for much of the game, yet only 17 points. So undisciplined with the penalties.

Assuming Warner and Bosa are back, Packers might be in for a tough fight next week.

                            • The most things I went to at the Dome were Piston games and those could get loud. I went to one game that was really packed, tickets were cheap and after the game, they had a Chuck Berry concert on the other side of the curtain.

                              • Here is the game wrapup of that twin bill, I forget how Tripucka was on fire in that game and that Three Dog Night also played that show. I don't have much memory of the concert, but I know people were wadding up those yellow beer cups and throwing them. It looked like a yellow snow ball fight. Those cups were the old paper cups reinforced by that heavy wax and wadded up could be a weapon. Plus everybody in the Silverdome was drunk.
