This is a bit of a crazy stat:

Since 2003, over 22 seasons, San Francisco has either missed the playoffs (15 times) or made the NFC title game (seven times) every year.

I remember when the Lions played them last year I'm pretty sure the announcers said that SF has been in the NFC championship game 18 times in their history

No team needs a strip it down to the studs rebuild like the Saints. The 2010 Superbowl was a long time ago. Brees is long retired, Payton has been gone 3 years. It's time to stop kicking the can. Their cap situation is a horror show and has been for a few seasons. They have to accept that next season and probably the season after that will be rough but it only takes 1 year to clear cap messes in the NFL if you commit to it. But it's something that should have been done after Payton left but they soldiered on
