And since the San Francisco 49ers are already eliminated from the Playoffs already, clinching the NFC North in their place would be even sweeter.

    • (Since circumstances are similar, echoing a sentiment from last January, when the Packers were about to play the 49ers and hosting the NFCC was on the line)

Early in the Civil War, Maj. General Benjamin Butler was in command of the Union garrison holding Fort Monroe, on the end of the Virginia Peninsula, across from Norfolk.

The Confederates were building defensive works opposite Butler’s position. Three men, enslaved by the Confederate commander, escaped captivity and made their way through to Butler’s garrison. Butler declared the escapees to be “contraband of war.”

The Union Army’s position on escapees was complicated. With three slave states having stayed in the Union, the official federal position could not be broad, radical emancipation. On the other hand, it was galling to receive an escapee - who had risked life and limb to escape to the Union soldiers that the escapee thought had come to free him - and then return the unfortunate soul to his enslaver under the Fugitive Slave Act.

Soon, the Rebel commander (Colonel Mallory) sent an envoy demanding return of his “property” under the Fugitive Slave Act. Butler demurred, noting that the Fugitive Slave Act did not apply to a foreign country. And, since Virginia claimed to be a foreign country, “she must reckon it as one of the infelicities of her position that in so far at least she was taken at her word.”

There is no universe in which I will root for the Packers. I do, however, reckon it as one of the infelicities of our position that we must grudgingly deem acceptable a Packer victory in the forthcoming Battle of U.S. Bank Stadium.

We may also, without overly taxing our consciences, take pleasure in any casualty reports proceeding from the battle - so long as such casualties are of a mild nature and only likely to afflict the wounded for a few weeks. Tweak the Packers and the Vikings, as it were.

Okay, how about I wash my mouth out (and throat and stomach) with some fine bourbon I have here for you?

No, no. No need to thank me. I'm happy to do this for you.

              • Getting crushed by Vita Vea in the open field going full speed doesn't seem like it would be a pleasant experience.

                • McCarthy is up 9 with the ball with 6:22, Tampa has only two timeouts. If they simply run up the middle 3 times and put they make it an onside kick game. Instead, one run and two incomplete passes. The Bucs score a TD and now are getting the ball with 100 seconds left to drive and get the game winning FG.

                  • Vita Vea making a tackle like that in open space was so entertaining. Great ball game with so many twist and turns.

Yes. Go Packers. No shit rooting interest next week. The ball game doesn’t mean anything to the Packers. It won’t hurt if they win or lose from their perspective. Give me the #1 seed for our Lions seeding.

                      • Tampa's atrocious ball security saved McCarthy's job for one more week. I swear that's like the third turnover tonight where a Dallas defender just took the ball right out of a Bucs receivers' arms.

                        • NFC South #4 seed:
                          1. Falcons, 8-7
                          2. Buccaneers, 8-7

                          Falcons: at Commanders, vs Panthers
                          Buccaneers: vs Panthers, vs Saints

and the right to host whoever doesn’t win the NFC North between the Lions and Vikings.

                          • I'd be shocked if McCarthy got fired. All signs point to him coming back. This SNF win probably sealed it if it wasn't already assured. Collinsworth doesn't do a whole segment on it if he thinks McCarthy is on thin ice
