Seriously, when i think back to my apprenticeship days mid 80s; the bosses would all be jailed due to Health & Safety violations.
I remember one particular job in Gorebridge, South Edinburgh, was about 18 years old. The boss said, “Right Marky Boy, get the copex liner doon, son.”
I was thinking, ok, we’ll BOTH get the liner down.
    Did it fuck mean that.
Was on a pitched, slate roof, with 30metres of copex liner tied to my belt. Absolutely shite-ing myself.
After i did that, he said later. “You wanna fire back up there with a bag and hammer and remove the chimney pot.”
Politely & diplomatically told him to go fk himself.

Nowadays, its cherry picker lorries. Even for the height of your shed !

Ha! I expect that with every repair! Actually, I think it was about $250. My wife actually wants to replace the insert (gas) and I’m sure that won’t be cheap.

      • Jesus Christ. When it rains, it pours.

I replaced the old mercury bubble thermostat a few weeks ago. After I replaced the thermostat the system was working well when we had the A/C running. Today it was a little chilly in the house so I decided to turn on the heat to take the chill off and make sure it was working before the colder weather gets here and I actually need it.

        It didn't work.

I turned the A/C back on.

        It didn't work.

I fucked around with it for a couple of hours and couldn't get it to work so I finally called the man.

Turns out it needed a fuse and the guy fixed it but it is coming in on a wing and a prayer and could go out at any time. Of course, it could last for another 5 years, but really, the HVAC system should be replaced.

I knew it was old (installed in 2005) and was on its last legs, but I was hoping to limp along with it for another year or two.

They are writing up an estimate. We'll see how critical replacing it is. Ha!

        • Back in 2016 I replaced our furnace so we could add A/C. The furnace was original to the house built in 1961. I hope the new one lasts longer than 18 years after the first one lasted 55 stinking years!

Yeah, this one doesn't owe us anything but the timing sucks. Heat pumps don't last like furnaces

            • We replaced our oil burner last year. The previous one, a Weils-McLain, was built in 1986. It worked fine since it had maintained yearly by the previous owner. The last couple years the guys would write down things like “this thing is old” on the cards. They said this new one would be more efficient. We’ll see.

Yeah that "more efficient" sales pitch sounds good until you do the math.

If you put in a $6k system and "save" 50 bucks a month, it will only take 10 years for it to pay for itself! Ha!

                  • Not to mention the fuel efficient furnace uses more electricity so it's a wash. Our electricic bill is just as much in the winter as in summer now.

I wish it was only $6k.

It's still there but she is noticeably better since the new UofM neurologist took her off the meds and said to get back to doing things. We saw her the day she was supposed to up her dose 25mg. She would be catatonic at the current dose. She really needs to learn to reign herself in when she is feeling good so it doesn't boomerang on her. We saw the original neurologist today and he said she still can't drive and gave us a letter for 2 more months off work. Original Doc agreed with UofM Doc that the meds were counter productive.

Ha! I picked 6k because the math worked out easy.

I put a new heat pump system in our beach rental house last year. It was about 7k. I figure that this one will run closer to 10.

                            • Good night! When we replaced the furnace and added A/C it was like $4,000. Things really suck now.

I get the feeling pre-2020 it would have been much cheaper.

We had our roof replaced last year too. Everything is crazy expensive now.
