  • Marlins didn't want to pay him at the time. Remember how the Marlins famously had something like a $20 million TOTAL payroll in 2007 or 2008? Yankees had several individual players that made more than their entire payroll.

I remember being almost equally excited for Dontrelle Willis in the trade because of his flare at the time. Willis was a total letdown.

Tigers traded away Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, and a few others. Basically like a richer version of trading Jackson Jobe, Ty Madden, and a couple others.

    • It was a great trade. Everyone was mostly on board with it, but there were some people who were hesitant to give up those prospects. The sign of a great organization is developing players and knowing when to cut bait on prospects before the rest of the league catches up.

The Red Wings were famous trading perceived top prospects for vets.

The Marlins are a disgrace and a trailblazer, back then peope diced them for their cheap ways. More teams are following their approach including the Tigers. If the same type of trade became available now the Tigers would hold on to their prospects.

      • More owners have realized they can run their teams on the cheap and not lose support by playing up "the farm" and the endless potential just over the horizon.

        • Yep, hence the Marlins being trailblazers.

          • Red Wings made that work when there was no cap. Didn't take too long for the wheels to fall off after that.

            • On the other side of that coin for low salaries...Most of teams aren't exactly selling out games. It's hard to justify big spending if you aren't sure you'll draw.

This is true for the last 2 seasons with COVID, but it has plagued the MLB for longer than that. You have to go back 10 years to see any excitement for a hot stove league. On a micro level you are right, if a single team can't justify the spending because they might not draw fans it is a rational thought. But if 20 teams have the same thought, interest in the league plummets.

Locally, none of the signings prior to 2006 were rational and it was the only time the Tigers were ever interesting. The franchise has been the drizzling shits for 32 seasons save for an 8 year stretch in which they spent money.

Well Berrios is pretty damn good and under control for next year.

                        • If the Tigers finish the season winning 7 of their next 10, they end the season 81-81. That would be quite the managing accomplishment for Hinch.
Overachieved already, but getting to .500 would be incredible considering the reputation of the roster before the season.

                          • We're about to see if Chris Illitch isn't content having a 75-win franchise at bottom dollar.

                            I... am not hopeful.

                              • If the cheap Tampa Bay Rays can compete in the AL East year after year despite being in the same Division as the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, then Ilitch has no excuse for the sorry product that he's put on the field since his Father died a few years back.
