I guess the knocks on him is that he’s a headcase, the stuff is down, and he looks much slimmer according to Braves fans. It seems maybe he has some demons, but that’s all fan speak.

Jones has certainly earned it with his hot start and solid 2019 season. Biggest question is his ability to stay healthy.

Yesterday's game showed those concerns of the back end of the roster/ depth. Guys like Burrows and Funkhouser ... really struggled in AAA last year, yet make the opening day roster in 2020.
AND Fulmer appears to be far from his pre-injury self. Struggled in that 3rd inning yesterday.

no on Jones leading off. You want some guys that get on base ahead of a diminished Miggy. That is not Jones....Jones coming into the year has a career .276 OBP (892 PAs), He doesn't walk and strikes out a lot.

I would love to see Maybin and Reyes atop the lineup I would probably do something like this

I agreed with Jaadam that Jones should move up higher in the lineup. Not lead off for the Tigers.


Rony Garcia randomly was the 5th starter for the Tigers last night... not sure how he beat out Manning and Mize, but ok. I guess he won the job behind the scenes.

They had to put him on the roster. Mize and Manning have minior league options left...Also they may get a call up as soon as the time passes where the team gets an extra year beofre Mize and Manning can become free agents.

Garcia was a Rule 5 pick. He has to be on the roster all year or we return him to NY.

Not every day. Jones has a nice little hot streak but he has had those before. He doesn't control the strike zone at all which undermines his offensive impact. Defense is good enough but you have to be able to hit. There are other guys (Goodrum, Cron, Schoop) that have more offensive upside than Jones does.

Not sure I'd use the word upside ... maybe consistency

Jones has had 1002 PAs in his major league career. He doesn't walk, strikes out WAY too much for his decent power. Yes, he does have good defense in CF and okay enough speed (as far as steals go). He has yet to post an average OPS+ season (last year was 92 which was far and away the best season). He is in his age 28 season, so he is what he is right now. At best a below average offensive player that is a good defender. That is a major league player but one that comes off the bench as a 4th or 5th OF for a contender.

I would use him as a sometimes starter, defensive replacement/pinch runner.

Victor Reyes, OTOH, has shown offensive improvement. He is not the defender that Jones is but can make most plays in CF (he is better in a corner though). In his age 25 season he has more upside than Jones. A switch hitter than shows an ability to get on base and work the count some. He could walk more though. I like him in the two hole most days hitting behind Maybin.

Jones, Reyes, Stewart, Maybin...really the entire outfield isn't good enough....Jones could stick as a 4th or 5th OF but the starters need to be much better if the Tigers are ever going to contend.
