Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

      Tigers
      Grade: A

The Tigers held the No. 1 pick and they locked themselves into an A when they used it on Torkelson, a future middle-of-the-order anchor. They then added a very good all-around catcher in second rounder Dillon Dingler, a consistent college performer in outfielder Daniel Cabrera in Competitive Balance Round B, and they flat out stole Arizona State infielder Gage Workman in the fourth round. Workman was seen as a possible first-round pick coming into the season. Torkelson was arguably the best player in the draft and Detroit added three other late first round/early second round talents in Cabrera, Dingler, and Workman. Great, great draft for the Tigers.

Ya, that was a really good draft. Honestly, you’re hoping to get 2-3 guys here who make the majors. Tork/Dingler/Cabrera are all highly touted guys with track records. Fangraphs has Tork 55/Dingler 45/Cabrera 40+. So those guys are all top 15 guys for us.

MLB ranks guys higher usually, but just using Fangraphs now has us with:

        Two 60’s
        One 55’s (Tork)
        Three 50’s
Seven 45’s (Dingler is in this group)
        Two 40+ (Cabrera/Quintana)

So we’re slowly getting there. That’s 6 high level guys. Seven 45’s, which are all considered MLB players. A couple 40+ guys. After that we have about 15 40’s (our 3 later picks included from yesterday.

So we now have 3 pitchers and 3 hitters ranked 50+. Plus, a lot of depth from the 40-45 range. Some guys will rise, some will fall, some will get hurt.

We have some international guys who have flashed so far. So guys are a long ways off, but we have started to build there, too.

Here’s the link to international rankings and there are two 16 year olds linked to the Tigers in the top 30.

Click on link and player for scouting report.

              #13 Christian Santana
              #26 Abdel Bastidas

So assuming we sign them, that’s a couple more SS to add to the system.

The thing to remember is that the Tigers will be extraordinarily LUCKY if even ONE of these guys winds up above replacement level in the majors.

Right now they have to develop these hitters and we know how well that has gone over the years.....

Well, they took some advanced hitters at the top. That helps. They seem to be focused on guys with hit tools now. They overhauled their scouting. This draft was a good haul all things considered.

Updated post draft ranks. All 6 picks in the top 30. Pretty solid group up top when the #1 pick of Tork is your 3rd best prospect.

Manning over Mize? I’ve seen several sites saying but it’s hard to imagine. I think Mize is going to be a damned good one

Parker Meadows is a guy they need to take a big jump from last season. He could be anything from complete bust to superstar

Still really wish they would've taken CJ Abrams over Riley Greene, too, but we'll see

A lot of teams shutting down their facilities due to Covid. I doubt they play at all this year. This will become a common theme come fall once flu season hits without a Covid vaccine.
