  • It's a nice ballpark to watch sitting behind 3rd base. Nice view of Detroit city. The concourse is nice as well. But too spacious overall and gets hot in the summer with little relief from the sun. About half the park seems like a long way from home plate.

    • Tampa swept the Tigers out of Tropicana Field today and they looked like crap all 3 games.

Froot is right. As long as Chris Ilitch is running things, this team will be a bottom 5 joke franchise.

Chris Ilitch is making me 'wish' that someone like the late William Clay Ford was in charge of the Tigers.

WCF was a lousy owner for the Lions, but at least he tried.

Ilitch isn't even trying to build a MLB team.

      • I have ways been a lot less critical of the Lions ownership because I thought once they retired Russ Thomas they changed their cheap ways. The NFL is different, they have a floor of what you have to spend. But imagine the Lions trying to win by spending by less than half.

As they have never had an identity as a team other than pay for the best talent in the Mike Illich years and hope to field a good team.

I guess the reason for moving the fence in now is because of too many complaints by players of the long distance and hindrance of hitting hr's. But it won't matter anyway, because top players won't come here no matter the dimensions. It would be nice to have a stadium and build the talent to suit it but that ain't happening to Comerica Park. It's a hopelessly nondescript park cept for the once huge centerfield. Which maybe you could get a great defensive outfield but the Tigers never really did that. They should have made the park like the old Tiger Stadium but that's milk under the bridge now. We are left with a forever tinkering monstrosity of a park now.
It wasn't wrong-headed, it's just that they never understood you need to build a team that can leverage that kind of ballpark.
And, start building it BEFORE it opens.....
Anyone in their right mind who saw Eric Munson as their first Draft Pick and Juan Gone as their premier splash the cash FA realized one thing.
They had no earthly fucking idea what they wanted.

          • I say it's just hard to field those type of teams in general. They have been Comerica over 20 years and they have rarely been able to produce good outfield talent.

True, but it's impossible when you try to acquire the very players that park is supposed to neutralize.
Granderson was the first player they drafted that fit that park to a T.
Speed, defense and big gap power.
That is what you need in a ballpark like that.
That and a couple of hitters who can smoke the ball all over the park, not just be pure pull hitters.

                • Ha ha I am new to Tigers
I watched Bill Freehan lift up and hug zmickey Lilith in 1968.
Uh no I’m not new to Tigers.
If I know Gary Sutherland and Pedro Garcia, that dynamic duo behind Mark Fydrych, I would say No, not new to the Tigers ha ha

                    • You had no idea when Chris Ilitch started calling shots, so you haven't been following them very closely. Any Tiger fan during the Radar era knew who was calling the shots. I've got 30 years posting about this stupid team.

But you actually have to TRY to acquire them.

Carl Crawford would have went apeshit in a brand new Comerica. Literally, even more than in TB.
Munson would have literally been off the board. Weak defensively at C, which means he's going to need to move to a corner - and his penchant is power hitting.
The literal definition of a bad fit. No matter how highly rated the services have him because they are all rating him on a scale where Comerica doesn't apply.

                        • If you are the trying to find an argument partner about Eric Munson you will have to look elsewhere. It was a bad pick. But if you are getting power hitters, they need to be left handed at Comerica.

                          • If you are opening a brand new cavernous park, power hitters are a luxury - and far from a necessity.
You are building a defensive team, with good pitching and players who are capable of much more than trying to pull everything they can swing at for a HR.
Munson was a no-go. If he could have been a serviceable catcher then maybe he stays on the board.
This isn't getting Piazza in the 57th rd (??). This is a 1st Rd pick and a stud like Ben Sheets is on the board.

                            • Like I said, if you are fighting to argue about the Eric Munson find someone else. There has been 20 drafts since then. Let it go.

                              • Also, if you can find a GM that can retroactively go back and draft guys like Carl Crawford then you should hire that GM. Good data mining is great!
