I read that that was the longest he's gone on the mound since 2021.

Was Mize hurt the last few seasons?

Good for 29th of 30 teams.

Only the White Sox (with 8) have fewer.

            Ugh.

With the death of Whitey Herzog (he actually played for the Tigers at the end of his playing career in the 1960s) earlier this week, I'm thinking that this current version of the Detroit Tigers is almost like his St. Louis Cardinals teams of the 1980s, except that we don't have any speed like they did to steal bases, or high average contact hitters either.

            • The hope is you can get results until these bats heat up. They have seven players under a .600 OPS so far with three at .800 or better.

This is all very early with small sample sizes, but they will not last with that many sub .600 players.

On the bright side, the defense is the best probably since the 2006 team. They have had a few wins today included where the opponents defense gifted them runs.

The Tigers do have speed and run the bases well, but no key is ever going to have the steal happy teams that we saw in the mid 80s.

              • Tarik Skubal's ascendance to an MLB ace began on April 30, 2021. That day was the genesis of what's become one of baseball's most unhittable pitches: Skubal's changeup. Skubal enters Wednesday's start against the World Series champion Rangers as the most valuable pitcher in the Majors over the last 10

This is an awesome article. Skubals, for me, approaching must see TV, how Verlander was most of his time here.

                • The Tigers are definitely on the upswing, but this is what a 500 team looks like. They can hang with anyone but usually have a major flaw or two.

I didn’t know Herzog played for the tigers. That’s crazy

Well what made the Rangers and DBacks work out so well last year? Most of the season I thought both were about .500 teams at best, and yet there they were in the world series. This year Texas is 10-9 and Dbacks are 9-10.

Corey Seager had an MVP year and so did Evan Carter when he came up late in the year. Semien, Ardolis Garcia and Garver (when healthy) were very good supporting casr. Their lineup was crazy deep. Josh Jung was a shoo in for ROY before he got hurt.

The rotation wasn't great but was solid enough. Montgomery and Chapman were huge pickups for them. The bullpen was a mess though (and their major flaw).

Arizona chugged along around 500 most of the year and got hot at the end.

Corbin Carroll picked right up from where he left off in his 32 game debut . Gabriel Moreno was touch above average offensively at C (a big leap over the previous year for Arizona). Marte, Gurriel and Walker formed a decnet supporting offensive cast. Perdomo was a touch under league average offensively but with his defense at SS that was fine. Longoria was decent enough offensively at 3b and still a good defender.

On the pitching side, Zac Gallen emerged as a star while M Kelly was a very capable sidekick. After they jettison the corpses of Mafison Bumgarner and Zach Davies the kids (Henry, Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson) held their own, but their rotation beyond Kelly was a huge issue for them all year. It is why they signed Erod to that 4 year deal this offseason.

Sewald being acquired at the deadline was a big get for them.

The Tigers equivalent of Arizona would be this

Javy Baez is within shouting distance of being league average offensively, Carpenter, Greene, Torkelson to establish themselves as a productive trio with one or two of them to themselves as a hub player (a player that the offense revloved around). Colt Keith and Parker Meadows to prove they are starting level players. Keith will hit--the question is on his defense. Meadows can play oustanding defense and has excellent speed (with a solid eye) all he needs to do is hit like .230.

Skubal is looking more and more like an ace and the rotation actually is pretty deep. The bullpen is even deeper.

For the first time in a long while, you can see the foundation and if a couple guys ascend early----- The Tigers might be this year what Cinncy/Arizona was last year except with a lot better pitching.

                            • As the weather is starting to warm up, so are the Tiger bats They are up to 21st in runs scored per game and still 6th in runs scored against per game. One worrying aspect is the defense took a huge step back. It may have cost them 3 games in the last week, not good Bob. It was mostly Colt Keith and Tork. Until last week, Keith was overperforming expectations at 2nd with the glove. Something to keep an eye on.

The conventional wisdom was the AL Central was the worst division in baseball. At the end of the year, it might be true, but not right now. Cleveland has the best record in baseball. KC is above the Tigers in the standings. Both teams are the top two in runs against per game.

Next up this week, a series at.Tampa and the they host the Royals. This is an early test of the Tigers.
