  • Is Castellanos their best hitting draft pick in the last 15 years?

Probably, and that alone is an indictment of how putrid the hitting talent when it comes to procurement and developing has been for the Detroit Tigers the last 15 years.

Heck, the last really good hitter that I think the Tigers developed was Travis Fryman 3 decades ago!

And the last real bumper crop of solid Detroit hitters were the people that came up in the late 1970s- early 1980s which led to the team's last World Series title in '84: Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Lance Parrish, and even Howard Johnson (who really took off when he got traded to the New York Mets). That's approaching 50 years ago, and that's ridiculous!

Yes, but they also dealt Eugenio Suarez for Alfredo Simon and Suarez has been an above average offensive player for his career
2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

          • Granderson is clearly the best position player they have produced since the 80s. It probably isn't close. Brandon Inge is in the top 5, but a lot of that was due to his defense. Infante, Castellanos, Suarez are highlights. But it's not a lot of players.

              • The Tigers just fell into the perfect position. Drafted a HoF pitcher in Verlander. Landed a HoF catcher in Pudge. Landed Maggs in free agency.

It was insane move after insane move. That shit just doesn't happen.

Don’t forget he picked up Fister and Scherzer for nothing too…then decided to back them all up with Todd Jones?

                  • Jones was rather good in his second go around when he learned that cutter.

                    • Jones was fine as a closer especially in his second go around with the Tigers. Yeah, he liked to get people nervous by giving up a couple base-runners pretty much every time he took the mound, but he only had a handful of blown saves over four or five years.

Not every closer was Mariano Rivera.

                      • Well, the lack of hitting by the Detroit Tigers came up again and bit the team in the rear, losing 1-0 earlier today to the reigning World Series Champions Texas Rangers.

Texas Rangers Manager Bruce Bochy has had a long time whammy on the Tigers, going back to when his San Francisco Giants swept the Tigers in the 2012 World Series.

                        • This season is going to be highly annoying.. They are most likely going to waste a strong pitching staff. Offensively Canha and Urshela were good pickups, but it isn't enough. The whole deal about not signing guys is they claimed they didn't want to block anyone but it looks stupid when you have so many guys with subpar production.

                          • It makes more sense when you translate "didn't want to block anyone" to "didn't want to spend money."

                            • Yeah, that might be the cover story.
