The assets the Tigers had were highly overrated by the local media, the national media and the local fanbase. Maybe Harris bought into the hype that it was a sellers market for pitching and the Tigers were the only ones with arms to offer. The reality was once the Mets decided to be sellers, the Tigers were left holding the bag. If you look at it objectively, the Tigers didn't have much to trade despite the hype. Before this season, nobody knew who Lorenzen was and Rodriguez had an oddly structured contract with an underreported no trade clause.

Lorenzen got an interesting guy. 20 year old in A+ holding their own offensively. Numbers don't look great but the Sally League tends to be more pitcher friendly. He seems to have a clue at the plate controlling the strike zone and good SB threat (14/17 steals this year). Harris said he will start out at West Michigan but he does well could be promoted soon to Erie.

All the time when the Tigers had a big payroll and finished with winning records but fell short of winning a championship, guys like Coop wanted them to shed payroll and go with the young guys. It was supposed to be fun watching the young guys compete and grow up.
My assertion was that rarely happens if ever. Normally the team stinks and it's a hard watch. You would have to go back to the early 80s for a season like that. But I do believe this team fits the bill, they have a terrible record but they have 3 young core hitters that are raking with some decent young pitchers. Tork, Greene and Carpenter are raking.Comment
