  • Does anyone actually believe that once Cabrera's contract is off the books that Chris I. is even going to put that money back into the team?

He was thought to get 7 million. They replaced him with Nick Maton who has been an abject disaster, but he was much cheaper. The dude is terrible at 3rd and blew the game today. Jeimer is 2.4 WAR this year at the plate, Maton -1.1 WAR at the plate.
Candelario allowed his offense (which fell off a cliff last year) to effect his defense. Went from being an above average defender to below average one. Well Maton was sent down to Toledo an hour after the game. So you should be happy about that.

As for Candelario he earned his non tender. And I think if he had not allowed his offense to cause his defense to go down then he is a Tiger this year. He didn't and that demonstrated a lack of mental toughness so fine with him being non tendered.
2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

      • And he is having a good year this year and he never had a defensive game like Maton had today. What a fucking disaster. Maton is in Toledo, hopefully for the rest of the season. But the Tigers saved money that they didn't spend!

I got a bridge in Flint that I'll sell to you once Chris Ilitch spends the money from the cost of Cabrera's contract. /Sarcasm

Yes, Candelario has never ever made a throwing error. Amazing you bitch endlessly on Maton but never bring up McKinstry who has been a very nice addition.

Boyd has been meh. Lorenzen has been good.

Is this a good team?. Nope, it is a below 500 team. But a better team than last year.

Assume you mean in payroll exclusively?

              2021 offseason
Signed Baez 140/6 (opt out after 23 season)
Signed Erod 75/5 (opt out after 23 season, QO offer)
Signed Chafin 13/2 ( opt out after 22 season)
Traded for Tucker Barnhart 7.5 million salary
Traded for Austin meadows 4 million salary

That is 240 million that Illitch signed off on. The organization thought they were ready to take the next step and Illitch spent. Now, you can say they didn't spend in the right people but they did spend.

I suspect they will spend Miggy salary on payroll. And they will have a better idea has to where to spend it.

              • 240 mil over 3 years on average is actually rather pitiful.

Once Cabrera's contract is off the books, Chris I. is just gonna pocket the difference.

Hell yes I will complain about Maton, he is not a 3rd baseman and he has a .576 OPS. If a team continues to send out a player that bad, expect complaints.

As far as the team being better this year, they are on pace for 70 wins and it is a soft 70 wins base on win differential they are a 30-46 team. You claimed they were easily going to be over 75 wins. So have a parade on being 10 under .500 in an absolutely dreadful division .

Nick Maton sucks, it was a failure. Anytime you downgrade that much at third and a guy like you doesn't how bad that gamble was, your opinion on everything baseball related come into question.

McKinstry has been an OK pickup, but if you are celebrating a .699 OPS, you have a weak hand.

You are celebrating 240 million, but it is going to be less than that total outlay because Erod will opt out this season. But Baez surely will not, because he sucks.

They bring in nearly $300 million a year in revenue. Chris Ilitch is pocketing the money.

                    • Dude is celebrating that Chris I. has "committed" to $240 mil over 3+ years, when there are several teams that put that much into their rosters in ONE.

                      • It's like people forgot or were ashamed that the only time the Tigers had success is when they spent money. Chemi, whatevergong82 and I are members of a very small group who fondly remember the Tigers from 2006-2015. Now we are reduced to celebrating the greatness of Zach McKinstry.

                        • It's just so sad that the Tigers somehow got purchased by a pauper.

Yep, and that's why even though I don't live in Michigan anymore, I still follow the Tigers via the MLB Audio app online.

How this team has regressed to the abomination that it is now is appalling.

I didn't want to go back to the days of 1989-90, 1992, and 1994-2005, but here we are.

The Detroit Tigers at one point were my favorite pro team growing up, but now, they are 3rd (tied with the Red Wings) after the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Pistons.

I'm starting to get a lot worried over the running of the Pistons, but that's a subject for discussion in the Pistons thread.

However, I can't believe that I have more faith in the management of the Detroit Lions over the cluster crap that is the Chris Ilitch run Tigers.

                            • Bear in mind, the Wings are being run on the cheap too (their payroll is something like 29th in the NHL).
