The issue with so many of the coaches once Millen was hired was Millen cleaned out the front office and never replaced them with quality people. The Tobins were hired and immediately lost a power struggle with Coach Marty. That sent the franchise reeling and it took until the hiring of Holmes to fix it. They brought in a lot of qualified support staff to augment some of the existing front office players.
The first thing Holmes and co. did when they started is build up the lines on both sides.
Campbell being a former player does help in relationship to Patricia. Patricia was late to meetings, was never a player and was abrasive to the players Campell's practices are as hard as any coach but he knows how to get the players to buy in, because he was a player and knows how hard it is.

You all really should watch Annie's segment on losing yet another Lions-Packers bet with her brother. It's funny and adorable. Starts at about 20min on the dot:
