My guess is they expand the practice squad rules even more, maybe increases their size. I could see the IR rules being lessoned as well. But roster spots, I agree I doubt the make much movement there. They will say something about wanting to keep roster management a part of the game for competition reasons.

They're going to have to give the NFLPA something to get that 18th game, and think that something would have something to do with roster sizes, even if it is just expanding the practice squad or additional active-inactives like the 3rd QB this year.

They can increase the roster size to 100 and increase the practice squad to 200 - at the end of the day if you want to compete for a SB you need your starters playing as much as possible.
Most games in this league even with the opened up offense rules are still 1 score games.

The Lions were heavily using the practice squad elevations especially at the end. You add another game and every team will need to use it more. The owners are incredibly cheap, it's why they invented this system

                  • Real talk ... the NFL should just warn them but still make it a big deal to discourage others from doing it. This isn't suspension worthy

                    • This article highlights the NFL schedule by Rest difference.

NFL rest edge & rest disparity: which teams are helped & hurt the most by 2024 NFL schedule, plus the betting importance of rest edges. 49ers, Ravens, Eagles & more.

                      image.png

For example, if team A plays team B and team A just got off a bye and team B did not, then team A would get a +7 (green) and team B would get a -7 (red).

Lions are fine in that their schedule is overall balanced. 49ers are screwed for the second year in a row. Ravens were given a gift of a schedule.

Last year, the Chiefs played 5 games with 2 or more days less rest than opponents. They went 2-3 in those games and 0-5 vs spread. They were 13-2 in their remaining games and 12-3 vs spread.

                      • Somehow, the 49ers getting "screwed" last year led to... the #1 seed and a Super Bowl appearance that went to overtime.

What a horrible fate the scheduling gods befouled them with.

                        • Didn't we find last year that there wasn't really any disadvantage to playing short weeks or advantage to having longer breaks between games?

I remember being surprised when someone posted the stats (I think)

                          • At the end of the day, talent and depth of talent trump any amount of rest.

                            Shocking revelation, I'm sure.

                            • Last year the Lions had either the best or 4th best advantage with rest versus their opponents. I'm sure it helped them. But remember that is a tool used by Warren Sharp and the stat is more useful for betting purposes on season totals or single games ats. It certainly shouldn't be used to determine who's going to go far in the playoffs. The Sharps of the world are looking for any advantage to try and gain a percentage point or two in the aggregate on the season.

The advantage is more likely to show up in the point differential of a game rather than determining the outcome of a game
