  • 2023 NFL Salary Cap Space Update

January 16, 2023 by Jason Fitzgerald

...Right now we are working with an estimated salary cap of $225 million for each team in the NFL and this is the same number that we have been using since last year. This number could go up or down by a few million (the NFL thus far has only said the cap may exceed $220 million) but it should be a fair estimate. This week we added what should be the official 2022 carryover figures for each teams adjusted salary cap. Sometimes these have some minor changes but will most likely remain constant.

The other thing that we added were estimates for adjustments to every teams salary cap. These adjustments come from incentives that were earned but not counted on the 2022 cap, incentives that went unearned but counted on the 2022 cap, per game bonuses that were not earned, guaranteed salary recovery, termination pay that went unfiled and so on. These numbers are not official and may change by a lot but I think it is better to show some of the changes when we know that some changes could have a big impact on cap room, such as Geno Smith earning his incentives this year. We did not yet include the workout bonus hold. That will reduce each teams cap by close to $1 million when we add it on....
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

    • Crap. The Boars are estimated at having $92,033,199 in cap space.

Sauce Gardner “wouldn’t mind” Jets trading for Aaron Rodgers

One of the highlights of Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner‘s rookie season was a 27-10 win at Lambeau Field that ended with Gardner wearing a cheesehead on the field as the Jets celebrated the victory.

Gardner knocked away three of Aaron Rodgers‘ passes during that win and he got a chance to reflect on his feelings about the Packers quarterback during an appearance on ESPN Radio Thursday. The Jets were seen as a potential suitor for Rodgers this offseason before they hired Nathaniel Hackett as their new offensive coordinator and chatter about that possibility has only gone up since Thursday’s announcement of Hackett’s hiring.

Gardner called Rodgers “definitely elite” and went on to answer whether he wants to see the Jets make a deal that brings the four-time MVP to town.

“I mean, you know, I would,” Gardner said. “I wouldn’t mind that. I just want what’s best for the offense. But, at the same time, I just got to focus on my job and focus on what we’ve got going on on the defensive side.”

Rodgers hasn’t said he’s definitely playing in 2023 and the Packers haven’t said they’re willing to trade him, so a lot has to play out before there will be any idea about whether there’s a chance that Gardner will be sharing a locker room with Rodgers.

        • I'd love it. They (Jets) wouldn't be able to re-sign Q. Williams. He would be great in the middle of our defense.

          • I was disappointed to see Quinn go back to Dallas. The Lions have to play them again next season and he has that defense playing amazingly well.

            • Seemed like Dan Quinn was in the running for the Broncos, Cardinals, or Colts. Jerry Jones must be paying Quinn top dollars as a coach.

It’s fascinating to watch the Broncos head coach search situation. Appears like they’ve been linked to several different top candidates. Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton, Dan Quinn, and DeMeco Ryans. One reason or another, seeming unlikely to hire any of them based on the most recent reports. Broncos fans freaking out.
That leaves the Broncos with who… Ejiro Evero, Jim Caldwell or David Shaw? I hope it’s not David Shaw because he’s one of my favorite media personalities… spending part time with NFL Network draft coverage in the past. Loved listening to Shaw. Bring him back into draft coverage!

I want the Broncos to hire Caldwell, but will guess the choice is going to be Evero.

Maybe they have their guy in mind but he's still in the playoffs and can't be hired yet?

Yes, now the new flavor week appears to be Jonathan Gannon (Eagles DC). Broncos seem to pivot every couple of days.

                      Amazing.

I knew a Broncos fan at one of my old jobs, and I told her to be happy that she doesn't have to put up with the Lions for as long as I have.

Ironic now that the Detroit Lions have their stuff together and the Broncos are a big mess.

                      • New owner that’s never done this before and a GM that royally fucked up with his first hire and what could go down as one of the worst trade/contracts in NFL history - yeah not really surprised it hasn’t been a smooth ride. I’m sure they would love to bring Payton in but don’t want to hand over the money/control/draft picks.

Big hire. Pairing that offense + Vic Fangio.
However, the elephant in the room remains the Dolphins QB situation and Tua. From the Dolphins perspective, it’s way too risky to bank on Tua given his injury history. I respect Tua’s toughness, but wouldn’t blame him for early retirement given the repeated concussions. Dolphins should think about QB options IMO. Backups, potential replacement, etc.
