  • This idea that a team that would be middle of the pack if they were in the NFC is 29th on their rankings is... huh?

It's like Florio is just throwing shit at a wall and calling it a list.

      • Ken Walker’s status for season opener remains uncertain

Running back Ken Walker III underwent a hernia procedure in mid-August, and the Seahawks pointed toward his return for the season opener. That remains up in the air a week before their game against the Broncos.

“He was working some today,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Monday, via Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. “He is running, catching some balls and doing stuff. We will see what happens. This is an injury that is unpredictable in the recovery. He is doing pretty well, though. He has to be able to tolerate it. Fortunately, we are playing Monday night, so we will have an extra day, and we will see.”

Walker played 12 offensive snaps and one on special teams in the preseason opener against Pittsburgh. He had five carries for 19 yards, one catch for 11 yards and a kickoff return for 22 yards.

Walker, though, missed the rest of the preseason with his injury.

The Seahawks drafted Walker 41st overall to pair with Rashaad Penny, who returned to practice Monday after a bout with COVID-19.

Donald also was reminded that he’s a role model, and he was asked if he heard from his kids about the situation.

“My kids didn’t see,” he said.

If he did this alleged swinging of a helmet in a game in front of real networkcameras in the Taj Majal of Sports (SoFi Stadium) he would be subject to discipline. But at a practice with grainy, hard to see newsreel footage? You are really stooping to a new low doing a Zapruder-style analysis on this "footage". Take off the Tinfoil Hat before you accuse Aaron Donald of being on the grassy knoll.

Baker Mayfield saying all the right things as another revenge game approaches

Baker Mayfield‘s football life has been filled with revenge games.

He returned to Texas Tech in 2016 after transferring from Oklahoma and outdueled Patrick Mahomes in a 66-59 win. A year after Ohio State won in Norman, Mayfield planted an OU flag at midfield in Columbus after a win in 2017.

In 2018, Mayfield stared down the Bengals sideline after former Browns coach Hue Jackson joined the Cincinnati staff.

“When Baker is out there, swinging (his arms), with his chest out . . . that’s what we want to see — him talking his talk, and walking his walk,” Panthers receiver Rashard Higgins, who spent four years with Mayfield in Cleveland, said, via Steve Reed of the Associated Press. “When he’s jacked up, he plays good. So I want to see it from him.”

Mayfield is jacked up all right.

He has denied telling an NFL Media reporter that he was going to “f— up” the Browns in the season opener. But his camp did begin selling T-shirts with Mayfield in a cowboy hat with the words “off the leash,” showing him breaking free of a chain on a dog collar.

Mayfield said the T-shirts had “subliminal messages” but added that he didn’t design them.

The fifth-year quarterback admits he is looking forward to “smack talking” with former teammates, but he didn’t give them any bulletin board material Wednesday.

“I’m grateful for my time in Cleveland,” Mayfield said. “I started my career there and it ended abruptly and unexpectedly, but we’re here now and everything happens for a reason. I’m rolling with the punches.”

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Mayfield wants to take it out on the Browns on Sunday, but it’s anyone’s guess as to what happens if he does.

                    • Wink Martindale: Derrick Henry is a modern-day Jim Brown

Posted by Charean Williams on September 7, 2022, 5:55 PM EDT

                      Getty Images

Some consider Jim Brown the greatest running back in NFL history. Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was 2 when Brown retired after the 1965 season, so he never saw the Browns running back play except on NFL Films.

But Martindale has seen Derrick Henry play in person, and he’ll see the Titans running back again Sunday, and Martindale sees Brown when he watches Henry.

“He’s a physical guy that can be one cut and go,” Martindale said, via Ed Valentine of Big Blue View. “He can be whatever he wants to be at certain times. He’s a very talented back. He’s like our modern-day Jim Brown. He’s just that much different when he has the ball. He’s a challenge every time he touches it.”

Since 2018, Henry has led the league with 1,115 attempts for 5,563 yards. After back-to-back rushing titles in 2019 and 2020, Henry was leading the league in rushing after eight games last season when he injured his foot. It took Jonathan Taylor until the 11th game to pass Henry, who didn’t return until the postseason.

The Titans expect Henry to return to his pre-injury form. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have given Henry a raise last week, making him the highest-paid running back for 2022.

“I still don’t think they gave him enough,” Martindale said.

Henry ran for 133 yards on 28 carries in the Titans’ win over Martindale’s defense in Baltimore during the 2020 regular season after Henry had 30 carries for 195 yards in an upset of the Ravens in a playoff game the previous postseason.

“Thanks for reminding me,” Martindale said sarcastically.

So, Martindale knows exactly what awaits his defense Sunday, making for a sleepless week.

Van Jefferson ruled out for season opener

The Rams’ injury report has featured only one player this week.

But that player won’t be on the field as the reigning Super Bowl champions begin their title defense.

Receiver Van Jefferson has been ruled out for Thursday’s game with a knee injury.

Head coach Sean McVay has classified Jefferson as day-to-day, but Jefferson did not practice all week. He underwent a “minor” procedure on his knee in early August after undergoing a procedure on the same knee earlier in the offseason.

With Jefferson out, Los Angeles is likely to turn to Tutu Atwell and Ben Skowronek to fill in as the third receiver alongside Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson.

The Rams also have Brandon Powell and Lance McCutcheon on the roster at receiver.

Stars could align for this to happen next offseason. QB need… Lions having the trade assets… the general fluidity at the QB position in recent years.

Not that I should be thinking about next year already. I hope Goff lights it up for the Lions!

IDK how anyone would feel about him, but, I was listening to NFL Radio and they were talking about if the NYJ fumble and have an opportunity to draft high next year, they'll snatch a QB. That would make Z Wilson available. The kid has arm talent. I think, he needs time and a better QB coach and system. Definitely a better OL.

                            • Odell Beckham Jr.: “My heart” is with the Rams

Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2022, 11:09 AM EDT

                              Getty Images

Earlier this week, free-agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr. half joked that he’d sign with the team that wins the regular-season opener in L.A. After the Bills blew out the Rams, however, OBJ sounded like a guy who remains loyal to the Rams.

My heart is wit them Rams… they show me what the NFL is suppose to be like … and we won a ring,” Beckham tweeted on Thursday night, after it was clear that the Bills were blowing out the Rams. “I’m forever grateful.”

The Rams have been using that gratitude to strike a balance between keeping him around but not putting him on the team. From maintaining a locker with his name on it to having him participate in the pregame Super Bowl celebration, the Rams have essentially expanded the roster to 54.

Some wonder whether the Rams are pushing the envelope by having Beckham on the team without technically putting him on the team. After the game, quarterback Matthew Stafford referred to Beckham as “a great teammate of mine” in the present, not past, sense.

If anyone else wants to change that, they know what to do. Make an offer he won’t refuse. Pursue him aggressively, with players and coaches making it clear how badly they want him.

Through it all, Beckham has the advantage of time and flexibility. He can sign with any team. If Thursday night’s opener wasn’t a fluke, he can pick another team — the Bills or anyone else.

For now, the Rams have the clear edge. Until he signs a contract, Beckham has the clear ability to go wherever he wants.

He apparently wants to stay in L.A. Maybe, if the Chargers finally achieve their potential, he’ll simply trade one shade of blue and yellow for another.

                              • Suuuuuuuuuuuuure LA is da Rams town

Crowd noise was an issue for the Rams at home, again

Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2022, 9:14 AM EDT

                                USA TODAY Sports

Even after bringing a Super Bowl trophy to Los Angeles, the Rams can’t bring L.A. fans into their stadium, at least not in sufficient numbers.

Yet again, the Rams had to deal with crowd noise in their own building on Thursday night against the Bills.

Was it factor for quarterback Matthew Stafford?

“No, we prepared for it,” Stafford told reporters after the game. “We were prepared to be on the silent count at home again, but it wasn’t something that we haven’t done before.”

It happened in the most recent regular-season game played at SoFi Stadium. As Stafford’s wife, Kelly, said after the Week 18 game that allowed the 49ers to sneak into the playoffs in 2021, “I’ve never seen so many of the opposing team’s fans at a game, and we came from Detroit. Matthew was on a silent count, Jimmy Garoppolo was not. . . . It was crazy. Again, I’ve never seen anything like that but it made it very hard for us, because I guess we weren’t expecting to be on silent count.”

They may see it again in future home games this year, especially with the Cowboys, 49ers, and Raiders on the docket. If nothing else, it will better prepare the Rams for their eight road games in 2022.

                                Ha!
