Ron Rivera: We’re excited about having Antonio Gibson return kicks

While Antonio Gibson totaled 1,331 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns last season, it’s looking more like he’s not going to be Washington’s primary running back in 2022.

Third-round pick Brian Robinson started the Commanders’ second preseason game over Gibson, rushing for 31 yards on eight carries. Gibson had just two carries, but had three receptions for 37 yards.

With Gibson’s receiving skill — he caught 42 passes for 294 yards with three touchdowns last year — he may be more of a receiving back and the team’s primary kick returner in 2022.

“You still need to see some more stuff, but you know, I think he is. I do,” Rivera said, via Sam Fortier of the Washington Post. “I think he’s done a nice job.”

Gibson has not played a special teams snap in his first two pro seasons. But Rivera added that Gibson has gotten “more and more comfortable” returning kicks.

“When you watch it on tape, you see him circling the ball, getting under it, making a good catch,” Rivera said. “It’s something he did well in college, and we’re pretty excited having him do it.”

Gibson averaged 28 yards on 23 kick returns at Memphis in 2019, taking one return back for a touchdown. While there are fewer opportunities to return kicks given the league’s recent rule changes, it’s still a place where Gibson could make an impact.

Ron Rivera: Brian Robinson doing well, no timeline for return

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera tweeted that running back Brian Robinson was in good spirits after visiting the rookie in the hospital on Sunday and he offered another update on Robinson’s condition Monday.

Robinson was shot twice in his lower extremities and suffered non-life-threatening injuries during an attempted robbery on Sunday evening. Rivera told reporters on Monday that all the news from doctors and Robinson has been positive and that it is too soon to start thinking about when he might be able to resume his playing career.

“I can’t get into specifics of it other than to say he’s doing well. I had an opportunity to visit with him last night, which was really a relief and kind of cool because he was in a really good place,” Rivera said, via Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com. “The doctors were very positive with him and he was very positive as well. He’s very fortunate, it’s a very unfortunate situation. He’s doing well, it’s just gonna be a matter of time before he’s back out here. There is no timeline, but, as I said, everything’s been very positive.”

Robinson was a third-round pick this year and was slated for a role in the backfield alongside Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic in his rookie season.

Browns cutting Josh Rosen

The Browns are moving on from one of their backup quarterback candidates.

Cleveland is cutting Josh Rosen, according to multiple reports.

Rosen, the 10th overall pick of the 2018 draft, joined the Browns in July as the team’s fourth quarterback behind Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett, and Josh Dobbs.

Watson’s suspension begins on Tuesday. Brissett is set to start Cleveland’s first 11 games of the season. With Rosen off the roster, Dobbs is now slated to be the club’s backup after a strong preseason.

Rosen could come back on the practice squad as the Browns’ third quarterback. But the team could also look elsewhere for another signal-caller.

Since the Cardinals drafted him in 2018, Rosen has also spent time with the Dolphins, Buccaneers, 49ers, and Falcons.

He’s appeared in 24 games with 16 starts, completing 54 percent of his passes for 2,864 yards with 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

Jets release Tevin Coleman

Running back Tevin Coleman is one of the players being dropped by the Jets as they move to a 53-man roster on Tuesday.

According to multiple reports, the Jets are releasing Coleman. He signed a one-year deal with the Jets in 2021 and re-signed with them this offseason.

Coleman had 84 carries for 356 yards and 11 catches for 49 yards in 11 appearances last year. Coleman spent the two previous seasons with the 49ers and spent four years with the Falcons after being drafted in the third round in 2015.

The Jets also cut LaMical Perine on Monday, so Michael Carter, Breece Hall, Ty Johnson, and Zonovan Knight are currently the backs on their roster.

Brian Robinson out of hospital, meeting with team doctors Tuesday

Commanders running back Brian Robinson is set to be back at the team’s facility on Tuesday.

Robinson was shot twice as the target of an attempted armed robbery on Sunday and John Keim of ESPN.com reports that Robinson was released from the hospital on Monday. He is set to meet with team doctors as he puts together a plan for his rehabilitation and return to the football field.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said on Monday that there is no timeline for that return, but that there’s no sign that Robinson will have to miss the entire season.

The meeting with doctors will likely determine whether the Commanders make a roster move with Robinson on Tuesday. Placing him on the non-football injury list would leave him unable to play for the first four games of the season.

Colts release Phillip Lindsay

The Colts are moving on from one of their veteran running backs.

Indianapolis has released Phillip Lindsay, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Lindsay signed a one-year deal with the Colts in May. He spent 10 games with the Texans last season before he was released in November. He then played four games with the Dolphins. In all, he rushed for 249 yards with one touchdown and caught four passes for 45 yards in 2021.

Lindsay played his first three seasons with the Broncos, rushing for 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons. He was a Pro Bowler as an undrafted rookie in 2018.

Lindsay recorded 16 carries for 55 yards in this year’s preseason.

The Colts have Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines at the top of their running backs group.

Bills to release O.J. Howard

Running back Duke Johnson isn’t the only notable veteran departing Buffalo on Tuesday.

The Bills are also releasing tight end O.J. Howard, according to multiple reports.

Howard signed a one-year deal with Buffalo in March that guaranteed him just over $3 million. But the guaranteed money involved apparently was not enough to keep him around.

The club will move to the 53-man roster with Dawson Knox, Quintin Morris, and Tommy Sweeney as their three tight ends.

Howard, who spent his first five seasons with the Buccaneers, had 14 catches for 135 yards with one touchdown in 2021. The 19th overall pick of the 2017 draft, Howard has 119 career catches for 1,737 yards with 15 TDs.

Chiefs cut Josh Gordon

Josh Gordon didn’t make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster.

Gordon, the veteran who was once among the NFL’s best wide receivers, is being cut today, according to multiple reports.

Despite trading Tyreek Hill to Miami, the Chiefs had a competitive wide receiver room in camp, with several players competing for the No. 5 spot behind JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and rookie Skyy Moore. Gordon didn’t make the cut.

Since leading the NFL in receiving yards as a 22-year-old on a bad team in Cleveland in 2013, Gordon has been suspended, traded and cut multiple times. Gordon has played in just 45 games over the last eight seasons, and it’s possible that he has played his last NFL game.

Dolphins set to cut Lynn Bowden

A report earlier this summer indicated the Dolphins engaged in trade talks regarding wide receiver Lynn Bowden, but no deal to move him to another team materialized over the last few weeks.

It doesn’t look like the Dolphins are holding out hope that one does come together in the next few hours. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Dolphins are set to waive Bowden off their roster on Tuesday.

Bowden was a third-round pick by the Raiders in 2020 and was traded to the Dolphins ahead of his rookie season. He caught 28 passes for 211 yards in 10 games that year and missed all of last season while on injured reserve.

The Dolphins released Mohamed Sanu on Monday, which leaves Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, Preston Williams, Trent Sherfield, Erik Ezukanma, Braylon Sanders, and River Cracraft on the depth chart at wide receiver.

Bills to release Duke Johnson

It’s cutdown day in the NFL and veteran running back Duke Johnson is set to be one of the players looking for a new place to play when it is over.

PFT has learned, via a league source, that the Bills will release Johnson. Those reports add that the Bills have an interest in bringing Johnson back to the practice squad if he doesn’t find a spot on an active roster elsewhere in the league.

Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Bills in March after closing out last season with the Dolphins. He ran 71 times for 330 yards and three touchdowns during his time in Miami and he has also played for the Browns and Texans since being drafted by Cleveland in the third round in 2015.

Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, third-round pick James Cook, Taiwan Jones, and Raheem Blackshear are the other backs on the Bills roster ahead of the deadline to cut the roster to 53 players.
