  • Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly ignored coaches after getting his big contract in 2018

As the 49ers continue to wait for a trade opportunity to surface for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, a recent report will make it even harder for a team to justify rolling the dice on Garoppolo, with or without an injury to its current starting quarterback.

A recent report seriously questions the extent of Jimmy Garoppolo’s commitment to the cause during the quiet times of the offseason.

An unnamed member of the team’s coaching staff in 2018 told Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle this about Garoppolo, via Peter King’s Football Morning in America: “Once he left that press conference [announcing his new contract] nobody heard from him for weeks and weeks. He didn’t return calls, he didn’t return texts — he basically just vanished. And we were looking at each other going, ‘What just happened?'”

The report from Silver notes that Garoppolo ghosting the 49ers became a regular thing during the ensuing offseasons.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement contains specific rules restricting football meetings and other activities prior to the launch of the offseason program. Surely, however, players (like highly-paid quarterbacks) welcome the intrusion on their quiet time because, for them, most coaches and executives would expect that they have no quiet time. Garoppolo, by all appearances, simply took full advantage of the fact that the 2011 CBA gave players much more of an offseason than they ever before had.

Still, coaches want franchise quarterbacks to be all about the franchise, all the time. It will definitely give someone pause, especially when it comes to making a significant investment of cash and/or trade compensation for Garoppolo.

It all points to an inevitable release of Garoppolo, baring the kind of unexpected development that has yet to transpire. A starting quarterback could still be lost of the season between now and August 30, when rosters reduce to 53. King addresses the question of whether the 49ers would continue to carry Garoppolo on the roster after the cut to 53, and even addresses the possibility that the 49ers would retain Garoppolo beyond 4:00 p.m. ET on September 10, necessarily guaranteeing his 2022 salary of $24.2 million.

Maybe the 49ers and Garoppolo will have a wink-nod understanding that, while they’ll give him weekly game checks in the amount of $1.34 million, he won’t seek the balance of the salary if they cut him before the season ends. If, however, Garoppolo wasn’t willing to honor the wink-nod understanding about the commitment that franchise quarterbacks should make, why would he honor an unenforceable promise to not take every penny that he’s owed if he’s on the roster when the season begins?

In 15 days, we’ll find out whether the 49ers are sufficiently committed to give up a 53-man roster spot for a guy they no longer want on the team. Eleven days after that, we’ll find out whether they’d actually pay him to keep him from waving farewell to San Francisco and saying hello to Seattle.

    • Joel Bitonio wonders whether JC Tretter is being blackballed for his stance on player safety

Colin Kaepernick may have some company.

Free-agent center JC Tretter, who also happens to be the NFL Players Association’s president, remains available, in the middle of August. Former Browns teammate Joel Bitonio suggests that Tretter’s role as a vocal advocate for player safety could be contributing to his ongoing unemployment.

“When you have a guy that’s top-five, top-10 at center in the league and he’s not on a roster, you know, and he’s the NFLPA president and maybe some of the owners don’t appreciate what he brings to the table on certain topics when he’s trying to protect player safety and things of that nature, it seems a little suspicious to me,” Bitonio said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “But, again, I don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. I don’t know what his conversations have been with teams and stuff, but just from an outside perspective usually players that are close to the top of their game get picked up. Teams want to win in this league. So it’s an interesting topic, for sure.”

Teams want to win in this league. That was the excuse the Commissioner repeatedly gave for teams not signing Kaepernick. Teams want to win, so they would never fail to pursue a player who can help them win. (Unless they’re tanking, of course.)

The Browns cut Tretter earlier this year, saving more than $8.235 million in cap space. The Browns also lost center Nick Harris for the season on Friday night. The Bucs previously lost center Ryan Jensen, possibly for the year. There has been no serious suggestion that either team will sign Tretter.

None of this has stopped Tretter from doing his job for the NFL’s players. On Saturday, Tretter sounded off on the condition of the playing surface at Soldier Field.

A fourth-round pick in 2013, Tretter spent four years with the Packers and five with the Browns. He ranked 89th on the Pro Football Focus list of the top 101 players of 2021.

Would it be crazy to think that owners are shying away from Tretter because he has become an agitator to the oligarchs? Nope. That’s another reason why high-profile (and highly-compensated) quarterbacks should be more involved in union leadership. They’re far less likely to be blackballed, and they’re far more likely to take command of the rank and file if/when a line must be drawn in the sand — even if it means a work stoppage.

For now, it makes sense to pay attention to what happens with Tretter. If the goal is to keep him out of the league because he helps run the union, ignoring it makes it easier for the owners to pull it off.

      • Buzz keeps building for George Pickens

In Pittsburgh, Pickett to Pickens could become a familiar connection for years to come.

On Saturday night, however, it was Mason Rudolph not rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett who threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver George Pickens, a pass that he caught while otherwise being covered at the back of the end zone, and getting both of his feet down.

Pickens has created plenty of hype, which isn’t easy for any player to do in an old-school training camp that focuses heavily on team. But Pickens skills and abilities are undeniable, and questions inevitably will emerge as to why and how he lasted through 51 selections — 10 of which were receivers.

The mere fact that the Steelers picked Pickens becomes reason enough to think he’ll be pretty good. Pittsburgh has shown for more than a decade an uncanny skill when it comes to drafting great receivers, in any round.

In the past, some have said that having Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback helped make young receivers look better. WIth Big Ben gone, the receivers now have a chance to show what they’ve done to make the Steelers quarterbacks look good.

Based on this strength, Pickens will also help make the running backs look good, too.

I read this earlier and man did he screw that situation up. He was surrounded by a great coaching staff and talent. They could have been dynamic.

Of course on the flip side if someone gave me 100 mil and put me in prime hunting grounds for the finest women in the world, who knows how I’d act too. And he was just leaving NE where they couldn’t do anything without getting shit from BB and his fatty patty band of shit bag coaches

            • Always be leery of the hatchet job on the player/coach when they are on the way out. It's mostly a self serving practice for the franchise. Jimmy G got them to a super bowl and nearly got them there last year.

But why would they want to leak this while they still have him? This could only serve to deflate his trade value.

                      • For what it's worth, if being a douche was disqualifying, the NFL would lose about 60% of it's players, 90% of its coaches, 99% of its front office personnel, and 100% of its owners.
