  • Speaking of hurting going forward.....

At what point do the saints (and other teams) have to pay for their salary cap sins? They got under the cap this year by essentially adding fake/voidable years to the back of guys' contracts.

Even Davenport, who was on the 5th year of a rookie deal, converted (basically) his whole salary to bonus and then they added 3-4 additional years to the deal that will be voided (they did the same with a bunch of guys).

This bugs me for a couple of reasons...1st. this is obviously an end around the salary cap, pushing $ down the road to a time when there will be a higher cap. 2nd: it seems like they get an additional year out of any deal this way.

The cap is, at least in part, about competitive balance. If this was just kicking the can down the road then I could deal with it.....but it really seems like they're getting an extra year to amortize various cap #s by adding these additional fake/void years.

    • There is no constituency in the league to eliminate that. Every team in the league wants that option to gain breathing space and the players get more money up front. The cap is too small as it is and you will always have these type of workarounds.

Hey Doc, did you hear the whole story behind this?

They are saying Brady was set to be in full control of the Dolphins until Flores made his accusations. Then they panicked and the deal was nixed. Brady then went to sit down with the Glazier's and now he's back.

If things went as he wanted, he would be the President/GM of MIA. Now he's back to QB TB.

        • All of that might be true but I don’t know what the Flores situation would do to make Brady not be able to step into that role. Hell that would have made Miami look cool again.

            • I'm still wondering why the Broncos gave up so much more to get Russel Wilson than what the Rams gave up to get Stafford. 🤔

The crazy thing is this: Russell Wilson is actually not that much younger than Matthew Stafford. They were both born in 1988, Stafford on 2-7-88, and Wilson on 11-29-88.

Maybe the Broncos are looking at the fact that when Wilson is healthy and has a team behind him, that he has historically done better than Stafford, last year notwithstanding.

                • The Stafford trade set the market on what teams were willing to give up for a quarterback plausibly in his prime. It was shocking at the time that the Lions fetched so much for him. The other offers weren't nearly as good. The fact that the Rams won the Superbowl, cemented that as a baseline for such a trade.

As the negotiating window for free agents continues on Tuesday, two teams have also agreed to swap defensive players.

According to multiple reports, the Patriots will send defensive lineman Chase Winovich to the Browns in exchange for linebacker Mack Wilson.

The trade cannot become official until the start of the new league year on Wednesday.

The deal swaps two players who may be a better scheme fit for their new teams.

After Winovich recorded 5.5 sacks in each of his first two seasons with New England, he didn’t have any in 2021. In 13 games with no starts, Winovich played only 10.5 percent of the Patriots’ defensive snaps. He was inactive for the team’s playoff loss to the Bills.

Wilson appeared in 14 games with six starts for the Browns in 2021, but was on the field for just 17 percent of the club’s defensive snaps. He recorded 42 total tackles.

Both Winovich and Wilson are entering the last year of their rookie contracts. Winovich was a third-round pick and Wilson was a fifth-round pick in the 2019 draft.
Chase was disruptive his whole time with NE until Fatty Patty returned. He averaged 5.5 sacks per year until last year. It has "Run the hill" all over it.

I’m going to love to see your reaction if the Saints trade for Watson and additionally fit his $40.4M cap hit under their 2022 cap.

Also, it sounds like Terron Armstead is waiting to see if the Saints trade for Watson. The #1 ranked free agent in this class.

Saints potentially trading for Watson and re-signing Armstead because who cares about the salary cap. Keep pushing out expenses to future years.

John Schneider: We’ll explore options, but we have a ton of faith in Drew Lock

One of the several assets the Seahawks received from the Broncos in the Russell Wilson trade was quarterback Drew Lock.

A second-round pick out of Mizzou back in 2019, Lock at times has shown some traits for being a successful QB1. In his rookie year, he threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-24 victory over Houston. In 2020, he threw for 280 yards and four TDs in Denver’s 32-27 victory over Carolina — the best performance of his career to date.

But Lock has not been consistent. And his performances late in the 2021 season did little to inspire confidence that he can be a franchise QB.

Still, Seahawks G.M. John Schneider had plenty positive to say about Lock on Wednesday in his press conference with head coach Pete Carroll.

“We’ll continue to explore options, but we have a ton of faith in Drew,” Schneider said, via Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. “We’re excited about a change of scenery for him. … He’s a guy, in my opinion, the media beat down a little bit. So we’re excited to get him into our culture with our coaching staff, and we’ll continue to look for guys to compete with him.

“There’s a number of guys [who] are still available [in free agency], and we’re gonna continue to work through that.”

Lock has compiled an 8-13 record as a starter through three seasons. He’s entering the last year of his rookie deal. In six appearances with three starts last season, Lock completed 60.4 percent of his passes for 787 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

In 2020, Lock finished tied with Carson Wentz for the league lead with 15 interceptions. Overall, he’s completed 59 percent of his throws for 4,740 yards with 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He’s also fumbled 13 times, losing five of them.

Report: Howie Roseman lands three-year extension with Eagles

General Manager Howie Roseman’s run with the Eagles isn’t set to end anytime soon.

Roseman was heading into the final year of his contract in 2022, but Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com reports that he has agreed to a three-year extension with the NFC East club.

Roseman joined the Eagles in 2000 and was first named the team’s G.M. in 2010. He spent five years in that role, but shifted to executive vice president of football operations during Chip Kelly’s run as the head coach. Roseman saw diminished power at that point, but returned to control of personnel decisions when Doug Pederson was hired in 2016 and reclaimed the G.M. title in 2019.

This offseason finds the Eagles with three first-round picks as they try to build off a trip to the postseason in their first year with Nick Sirianni as their head coach. With the extension in place, Roseman and Sirianni are both signed through the 2025 season.
