  • Tom Brady on unsportsmanlike conduct foul: “I didn’t cuss”

Posted by Mike Florio on January 26, 2022, 9:50 AM EST

Referee Shawn Hochuli threw a flag on Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady after Brady, per Hochuli, “got in my face in an aggressive manner and used abusive language” after Hochuli failed to flag Rams linebacker Von Miller for roughing the passer.

While the language may have been “abusive,” it wasn’t foul. According to Brady.

“If I feel like they miss a call, I want to let the guy know,” Brady said in the latest installment of his Let’s Go! podcast. “And I’ve done that literally a thousand times over the course of my career and never got called. In this instance, before I could realize it, the flag was thrown. And I was looking at the guy like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I didn’t cuss, I didn’t do any of those things. . . .”

Brady confirmed that he believed Hochuli missed a clear instance of a foul by Miller.

“I obviously felt like I got hit on the chin, and I felt like he missed in the end a clear penalty,” Brady said. “So I screamed at him to throw the flag, and he did. But I guess I need to be more specific with who he needs to throw the flag on. So I’ve got a nice bruise under my chin. . . . It is the first time in 22 years to get flagged. That was pretty comical to me.”

Brady wasn’t laughing about it at the time. He probably won’t be laughing when the fine letter comes, either.

      • Gayle Benson: We’re going to make a thorough search

The Saints are looking for a head coach for the first time in a long time and it didn’t take long for one name to pop up as a favorite to succeed Sean Payton.

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen had an interview with the Bears scheduled for the same day that Payton announced he is stepping down after 16 seasons in New Orleans, but it was called off. Allen has head coaching experience with the Raiders and he stepped in when Payton was sidelined by COVID, which adds to the reasons to think he’s in line to replace his boss.

While Allen may look like the favorite, Saints owner Gayle Benson promised the team would take a long look at candidates inside and outside the organization before making any decisions.

“We’re going to make a thorough search and choose the right person for the position,” Benson said, via Luke Johnson of Nola.com.

Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was a Saints assistant before going to Detroit and his name has also come up as an expected interview in New Orleans. A truly thorough search would go deeper than that, but it could still wind up with a familiar face taking a step up the ladder in New Orleans.

        • Kelly Stafford: Ndamukong Suh really dislikes Matthew, and we don’t know why

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 26, 2022, 4:44 AM EST

Former Lions teammates Ndamukong Suh and Matthew Stafford were involved in an altercation on Sunday when Suh was flagged for taunting Stafford after accusing Stafford of kicking him. Now Stafford’s wife has weighed in on the matter and said that Suh is the only player in the NFL who has a problem with Stafford.

“I feel like he’s the only player in this league who really dislikes Matthew and we don’t know why. We legit don’t know why,” Kelly Stafford said on her podcast, via the Detroit Free Press. “Now he can actually dislike him for a fricking reason. I thoroughly enjoyed it and that’s all I’m gonna say. I wish Suh the best, I really do. His family is always so kind. But come on dude, ya’ll were teammates at one point. That really bothered me. . . . I just don’t get it, it disappoints me in a way with Suh. Maybe we’ll figure out, maybe there’s a reason and he’ll let us know, but Matthew doesn’t really seem to care. Just me, of course.”

Stafford got the last laugh when he threw the last pass of the game to Cooper Kupp to get the Rams into field goal range to beat the Buccanners on the final play. Suh was rushing and hit Stafford just as Stafford threw the pass. Kelly Stafford gave her thoughts on the taunting penalty and the final pass.

“I realize it’s Suh and I’m like ‘huh, this is interesting.’ And he’s in Matthew’s face saying, ‘I’m gonna [expletive] you up, I’m gonna [expletive] you up.’ Those were his words. And to be honest, if I was Matthew, I’d be like ‘I’m [expletive] terrified ’cause you are a monster and you could really do some harm,'” Kelly Stafford said. “Obviously, when I saw that, I was like, ‘Oh F you Suh. Like what is wrong, relax dude, it’s football.’ And I have no idea what just triggered that. So then I asked Matthew last night and he was like, ‘honestly, I don’t really know what happened. I didn’t really know who tackled me. But I remember getting put to the ground and someone on me and got him off me to try to get to the next play, and then Suh was in my face telling me he was going to [expletive] me up.'”

Kelly Stafford was pleased to see the Rams get the win.

“I’m trying to give some grace here and not get very upset about the massive man threatening my husband,” she said. “But at the same time, are you kidding? What are you doing? . . . It’s water under the bridge now, Matthew could care less. But I just want to point out one thing: The best way to say ‘F you’ to someone without having to actually say it is to throw a dime right in their face at a zero all-out blitz right as he’s coming for you. And you throw it right as he hits you and it hits Cooper right in the hands, and your kicker kicks a game-winning field goal. . . . Matthew has done very good against an all-out blitz all year, so it was a very interesting call. So he saw it coming and just waited until Suh got as close as he could and just launched it right in his face. . . . Sometimes, you gotta shut them up with your play. You don’t have to say anything. You don’t have to do anything. . . . Matthew could care less, but I loved, I loved watching him throw that ball right in Suh’s face.”

Suh and Stafford were teammates on the Lions for five seasons.

Report: Raiders request interview with Bucs executive John Spytek for G.M.

The Las Vegas Raiders have requested permission to speak with Tampa Bay Buccaneers vice president of player personnel John Spytek for their general manager opening, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

Spytek has also spoken with the Minnesota Vikings regarding their G.M. opening.

The Raiders are looking for a replacement for Mike Mayock, who was relived of his duties in the position earlier this month. The Raiders also planned to interview their own director of pro personnel Dwayne Joseph, New England Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler, Indianapolis Colts assistant G.M. Ed Dodds, Bears assistant director of player personnel Champ Kelly and Cincinnati Bengals scout Trey Brown for the role.

Spytek is in his first year in the role with the Buccaneers in his sixth season overall with the team.

Spytek played linebacker at the University of Michigan from 1999-2002 and began working in the NFL in 2004 as an intern with the Detroit Lions. He interned again with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005 before moving into a full-time scouting role in 2006. He became the Cleveland Browns director of college scouting in 2010 before moving on to join the Denver Broncos scouting department in 2013.

Spytek left the Broncos to move to Tampa following Denver’s Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers.

            • That dude has to stop complaining about his justified unsportsmanlike penalty. Good grief, he needs to look at himself on tape, when you talk like that to a ref in any sport expect to get penalized. It was a long time coming for him, he flaps his yap all the time. Stafford had to be laughing, that Miller hit was small potatoes compared to the abuse #9 got in Detroit with no flags being called.

              • I still can’t believe he thought Stafford intentionally kicked him in the nuts. Suh trucked him and Staffords legs were tangled between Suh’s legs.

I didn’t see it the way Suh did

Lol. Think I said the same thing back when Hackett was mentioned as a Lions OC possibility a few years ago. The offseason when the Lions hired Bevell as OC.

                              • The Saints job isn't a good one right now.....part of the reason Payton stepped down is that it's rebuild time.

The Saints head into the offseason after not making the playoffs, having no solid options at QB, and $74-76m over the cap. Total cap room is only $209m.....they need to cut by a third just to meet the salary cap.

Unless Mickey L has a magic wand....he's going to have to take a can of gasoline to the whole thing and start over. There's going to be a fire-sale on NOLA this offseason.

When Glenn goes down there to decline the job, he should take Holmes with him to see how we can assist them with their cap probelm
