Bears owner George McCaskey: Take anything Olin Kreutz claims with a grain of salt

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 10, 2022, 3:18 PM EST

Former Bears center Olin Kreutz is one of the most respected players in Chicago, but Bears owner George McCaskey took a shot at Kreutz today, essentially calling him a liar over a recent claim that the Bears offered him a $15 an hour job.

Kreutz said last week that the Bears need to change the way they do business, citing the $15 an hour job offer as an example of the team’s cheapness. Today McCaskey suggested that Kreutz is dishonest.

“I’ve learned over the years to take just about anything that Olin says with a great of salt,” McCaskey said. “That’s the way it is sometimes with Olin, you don’t get the whole story. Olin knows what the story is.”

To suggest that nothing Kreutz says is trustworthy is a strange thing to say about such a respected player. Kreutz didn’t only make six Pro Bowls with the Bears, he also received the team’s Brian Piccolo Award, which goes each year to a player who exemplifies the team’s values, more times than any other Bears player in the half century since the Bears began bestowing the honor on players. McCaskey also offered no evidence that anything Kreutz said about the $15 an hour job offer was false.

Attacking Kreutz will do nothing to endear McCaskey to Bears fans, who are tired of McCaskey and his family failing to put a winning product on the field.

Also a residue of being around BB. I guess he also thought that was the secret sauce.

Vikings fire Mike Zimmer, Rick Spielman

“Just good enough” is no longer good enough for the Wilfs.

The Vikings pressed the reset button on Monday, firing both coach Mike Zimmer and G.M. Rick Spielman. Zimmer had just finished his eighth season on the job. Spielman joined the Vikings 15 years ago, on the heels of the Fran Foley/Triangle of Authority fiasco.

Zimmer’s fate seemed to be sealed after a second straight non-playoff season from a team that seemed to have the talent to compete at a high level. A string of blown leads made it obvious that: (1) the players were good enough to win; and (2) the coaching staff wasn’t good enough to help them get there.

The decision to move on from Spielman is a bit more surprising, since he has done a very good job of compiling talent. In the end, however, the decision to pivot from quarterback Case Keenum after a 13-3 season to Kirk Cousins, who went 1-3 in playoff seasons, likely tipped the scales against Spielman.

Where the Vikings go remains to be seen. They need a strong presence in the building, since ownership doesn’t live and work in Minnesota. They have a first-class stadium, a first-rate practice facility, and a first-tier fanbase. For far too long, however, the team has been floating around the middle of the pack, rising to the playoffs just often enough to get the franchise to stay the course.

After a very disappointing 2021 season, the course is now changing. Dramatically.

              • Dolphins Fire HC Brian Flores

January 10th, 2022 at 8:46am CST by Adam La Rose

‘Black Monday’ has seen its first surprising move of the day. The Dolphins have fired Head Coach Brian Flores, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter).

Flores, 40, took over as the Fins’ HC in 2019, compiling an overall record of 24-25. A 10-6 finish last year was the cause of a great deal of optimism for the future for the team, as they just missed out on the playoffs and were set to hand over the quarterbacking reigns to 2020 first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa.

2021 was a completely different story, however. After winning in Week 1, the team suffered seven straight losses and was seen as arguably the biggest disappointment in the league, given all the optimism heading into the season. In the midst of that skid, it was reported that Flores was on the hot seat. The mounting losses, along with a perceived lack of flexibility made some believe Flores wasn’t the most approachable of coaches.

Not long after, though, the team turned things around and won seven straight to get to 8-8 on the campaign. While they ultimately fell short of the playoffs with a 9-8 record, the fact that a potential tailspin turned into another winning season had many feeling Flores would be safe. Instead, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reports that Owner Stephen Ross met with Flores on Monday before making the decision to fire him. He adds that the latter “didn’t always agree on key team decisions” with General Manager Chris Greer, but also that “there’s a widespread feeling of shock within the team”.

The Team Tweeted out a statement in which Ross said, “after evaluating where we are as an organization and what we need going forward to improve, I determined that key dynamics of our football organization weren’t functioning at a level I want it to be and felt that this decision was in the best interest of the Miami Dolphins. I want to thank Brian for his hard work and wish him nothing but the best in the future”. Schefter adds that Greer is safe for the time being.

Miami joins Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Denver, Minnesota and Chicago as teams in need of a new head coach for 2022.

Dan Graziano of ESPN reports the Bears requested permission to interview Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Frazier played for the Bears from 1981-85, leading the team in interceptions during their Super Bowl XX championship season.

Frazier has head coaching experience, taking over the Vikings as interim coach in 2010 before getting the full-time job from 2011-13. He went 21-32-1 and made the postseason once in his tenure in Minnesota.

He has spent the past five seasons as the Bills’ defensive coordinator.

                  • Broncos request interview with Kellen Moore

Both Cowboys coordinators are on the Broncos’ list of head coaching candidates.

Mike Klis of KUSA reports that the Broncos have requested an interview with Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. They’ve also put in a request to interview Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn since firing Vic Fangio on Sunday.

Moore interviewed with the Jaguars last week and could wind up on other lists. The Cowboys led the league in points and yards from scrimmage this season, which only helped make him a more popular candidate for a bump up the final rung of the coaching ladder.

The Broncos have also asked to interview Patriots assistant Jerod Mayo and there will likely be more names coming as General Manager George Paton runs his first head coaching search.
