  • DESHAUN WATSONQB, HOUSTON TEXANS
The NFL announced that it will not place any restrictions on Deshaun Watson's ability to participate in team activities "at this time."

The statement also noted that the league's review of the 22 instances of alleged sexual assault is still "ongoing and active." Watson will not be deposed into the lawsuit against him until February so it could be some time before any legal resolution is found. However, the NFL does not need that to happen for Watson to be put on the Commissioner's Exempt List, which would prevent him from playing until removed. On top of the allegations against him, Watson is still in the midst of a standoff with his own organization. Teams have reportedly become interested in trading for him once again but he remains in a strange limbo in Houston for now.

      ALDON SMITHLB, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
Seahawks DL Aldon Smith has reported for training camp as he awaits arraignment on battery charges in Louisiana.

Per ESPN's Brady Henderson, Smith has also "worked himself back into shape." Smith was arrested less than 48 hours after signing with the Seahawks in April. His arraignment date has since been pushed back to August 24. Headed into his age-32 campaign and sadly almost always in some trouble with the law, Smith notched five sacks as a 16-game starter for the Cowboys last season. He has a legitimate shot at making the Seahawks' 53-man roster if they are satisfied with his off-the-field standing. Before last year, Smith had not appeared in a game since 2015.

        MALIK HOOKERDB, DALLAS COWBOYS
Cowboys signed S Malik Hooker, formerly of the Colts.

The No. 15 overall pick of the 2017 draft was allowed to play out his rookie contract with the Colts after tearing his Achilles' tendon last September, the latest in a long line of injuries. Amazingly still only 25 years old, Hooker is the kind of bounce-back flier you take, though the Achilles is a horse of a different color for an injury comeback. It is nevertheless a zero-risk bet to make on a player whose career got off to a strong start.

Kelvin Benjamin calls time with Giants “a hoax,” bashes Joe Judge

The Giants signed Kelvin Benjamin on May 17. They cut the tight end before the end of their first training camp practice.

Benjamin blames Joe Judge, saying the head coach tried to “sabotage me to get me out of there.”

“I just felt like from Day 1, once I stepped on the field, once I put on the colors, he never liked me,” Benjamin told Zack Rosenblatt of NJ Advance Media. “He didn’t even want me there.”

Judge spoke to the media before Benjamin was cut Wednesday, so Judge has not addressed Benjamin’s departure yet.

General Manager Dave Gettleman drafted Benjamin in the first round with the Panthers in 2014. The Giants signed Benjamin, who hadn’t played in the NFL since 2018, after giving him a tryout at their rookie minicamp.

Benjamin, 30, played receiver before this year.

Benjamin said he weighed 265 pounds at the end of the mandatory minicamp in June, and the Giants wanted him at 251 pounds. He instead showed up to training camp weighing 268, Benjamin said, after adding muscle.

Benjamin passed the Giants’ conditioning test Tuesday, he said, but Judge told him Wednesday the Giants were fining him for being 17 pounds overweight. The Giants also wouldn’t let him practice.

“To be honest, man, I just felt like it was all a hoax,” Benjamin said. “I felt like they didn’t give me a chance. I finished the conditioning. I finished all of that. I did what I was supposed to do.”

Benjamin, who said he does not plan to pursue any other NFL opportunities, bashed Judge on his way out the door.

“I have a perspective on Joe Judge,” Benjamin said. “He’s not a coach that can ever win a Super Bowl because he sits there and cusses all day. You can tell he’s one-sided about everything. He’s a know-it-all. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. We all can learn from each other. We’re all humans at the end of the day. The true colors will come out.”

They sign you, expect you to come to camp at 251 and you come in at 268 (heavier than when you were signed).
You showed up handing them your termination papers - asking them to be signed.....
Probably went back home and changed into a vintage Rod Smart jersey.....

Several Giants players defended head coach Joe Judge after Kelvin Benjamin, released on Wednesday, accused the coach of being too strict.

Shots being fired back and forth there. The media (local) being intent on taking the team's side is kind of weird, but there's no shortage of those types around the league.

                          • Myles Jack on Trevor Lawrence: This is what a No. 1 overall pick looks like

Trevor Lawrence has his first NFL training camp practice under his belt and the quarterback has an admirer in one of his Jaguars teammates.

Linebacker Myles Jack squared off against Lawrence during Wednesday’s practice and said that he’s already seeing a lot of traits that he’s observed in more experienced professional quarterbacks.

“It was cool because you see the draft and everything and you hear the hype,” Jack said, via James Palmer of NFL Media. “So, I’m getting in my stance and I’m seeing him getting underneath and when you start seeing him sling the ball man. You’re like, OK, this is what a No. 1 overall pick looks like. You know what I mean? So, in my experience I’ve played against a lot of great quarterbacks and to see a young guy come in and the touches that he puts on the ball, the passes he can make, throwing receivers open — he’s got a very good understanding. Will he make mistakes as a young guy? Of course. But I think he’ll be here for a long time and he’ll be a staple for Jacksonville.”

Gardner Minshew took the first reps at quarterback for the Jaguars on Monday, but reporters on hand for the session concurred with Jack’s assessment of the rookie and, regardless of Minshew’s bathroom plans, that should lead to a permanent change in the order sooner rather than later.

Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes again sit atop player retail sales rankings

It’s Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. Or Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady.

For 12 consecutive quarters, dating to October 2018, either Brady or Mahomes has led in NFL player retail sales. Brady is first on the top-50 list, released Thursday by the NFLPA, and Mahomes is second from preseason results dating March 1 to May 31.

The list is the most up-to-date, comprehensive sales figures and includes only verified rankings of NFL player product sold from online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 75 NFLPA licensees. Licensed product across hardline, apparel, digital, and unconventional categories include items such as game jerseys, T-shirts, hoodies, bobbleheads, plush toys, socks, face coverings and more.

While 10 new faces appear on the top 50, the top 10 is dotted with several familiar veterans, including three from the Cowboys:

                              1. Tom Brady, QB, Tampa Bay

                              2. Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Kansas City

                              3. Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas

                              4. Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati

                              5. CeeDee Lamb, WR, Dallas

                              6. Justin Fields, QB, Chicago

                              7. Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Dallas

                              8. Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jacksonville

                              9. Rob Gronkowski, TE, Tampa Bay

                              10. Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo

Chase Young, Davante Adams, Lamb and Prescott rocketed from the NFLPA’s year-end list to first quarter rankings. Young surged 26 spots (No. 39 to No. 13), Adams 18 spots (No. 45 to No. 27). Lamb 14 spots (No. 19 to No. 5) and Prescott 10 spots (No. 13 to No. 3).

Bucs linebacker Devin White debuted at No. 17, the highest-ranked defensive player since the start of the 2020 season. Seven defensive players appear in the top-50 rankings, the most on a preseason list since the 2019 season.

                              • James Bradberry: Joe Judge ain’t for everybody

Posted by Josh Alper on July 29, 2021, 2:50 PM EDT

                                Getty Images

James Bradberry was teammates with Kelvin Benjamin with the Panthers and he heard Benjamin’s critique of Joe Judge after the Giants released Benjamin on Wednesday, but the cornerback isn’t signing on to that view of the Giants head coach.

Benjamin said Judge worked to “sabotage me to get me out of there” and is “not a coach who can ever win a Super Bowl” in the wake of Judge telling him he would be fined for being overweight and couldn’t practice despite passing his conditioning test. Judge said Thursday that he wouldn’t detail his conversations with Benjamin and said there’s “no ill will” on his end.

When Bradberry was asked about Benjamin’s comments, he said Judge was not the right coach for every player but that he is the right coach for the Giants.

“It ain’t for everybody. You feel me? He’s entitled to his opinion,” Bradberry said, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. “I definitely think coach Judge is tough. But football is tough. There’s a lot of pressure being in our shoes, so I don’t expect him to give us our way all the time. A tough coach, that’s how you build structure. That’s how you build discipline. That’s what he’s building here. It’s part of our culture. It ain’t for everybody, man.”

Ultimately, it won’t be the opinions of Benjamin or Bradberry that define Judge’s tenure with the Giants. It will be his record and the expectation after an active offseason is that it should improve in his second season on the job.
