Hall of Fame Game canceled
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 25, 2020, 7:09 AM EDT

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL continues to say the regular season will start on time. The preseason, however, will not.
The Hall of Fame Game, the league’s annual preseason kickoff in Canton, Ohio, has been canceled, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The enshrinement ceremony for the Hall of Fame Class of 2020 has also been postponed, likely until next year, when the Steelers and Cowboys are expected to face of in the 2021 Hall of Fame Game.
The cancelation of the Hall of Fame Game is the biggest concession the NFL has made yet to the pandemic. Although the league canceled the live event portion of the NFL draft, it still had the draft on its scheduled date and has gone through the offseason as if everything is proceeding as planned.
Whether further changes are coming in training camp, the preseason and the regular season only time can tell, but it’s clear that the pandemic is a force the league simply cannot control.

Adam Gase A Factor In Jamal Adams’ Trade Request?
June 24th, 2020 at 2:36pm CST by Sam Robinson
The trade request Jamal Adams submitted may not be entirely a financial matter. Adam Gase serves as a “major factor” in the All-Pro safety’s desire to leave the Jets, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News (on Twitter).
Although Gase was hired just last year, he loomed briefly as a hot-seat occupant after the Jets’ poor start. While Gang Green decided to keep him, with Gase ally Joe Douglas having been hired as GM, this has not been a smooth ride. Other Jets have taken issue with the team’s new head coach, Mehta tweets.
A lack of trust and a skepticism toward his leadership ability reside at the root of certain Jets’ problems with their head coach, Mehta adds. Adams no longer wishes to be part of a Jets turnaround and seeks a team with a more stable leadership structure compared to what the Jets have in place, per Mehta.
Reports of friction between Gase and former Jets GM Mike Maccagnan spawned quickly after the franchise paired the two, and an icy draft followed with minimal Gase input. The second-year Jets HC also took issue with the team’s Le’Veon Bell signing and was believed to frequently voice his frustrations about the running back during the season.
This marks the first report linking Gase to Adams’ desire to be traded, but it adds another layer to a quickly developing saga. The Jets have not responded to Adams’ trade request and have leverage because of the defender’s contract running through 2021. Adams took issue with Douglas listening to offers for him last year, and the then-third-year safety said he’d voiced a desire to be a long-term Jet with both Gase and Douglas before those trade talks surfaced. Issues with Jets management continue eight months later.

Weird and exciting pairing.
Josh McDaniels offenses have generally been quick and precision passing. Though that could have to do with the strengths of the starting QBs (Brady, Orton) on McDaniels’ rosters.
McDaniels did draft Tebow, so I’m sure he had some say in this. Newton was an improved passer when he was last healthy.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

If you can’t beat him, sign him.
The Patriots have agreed to terms with quarterback Cam Newton, PFT has confirmed. The story was first reported by ESPN.
Newton has a 2-0 record against the Patriots during his time with the Panthers. The first overall pick in the 2011 draft.
It’s a low salary, one-year deal with plenty of incentives. And it gives Newton a chance to supplant another former Auburn quarterback who had been atop the depth chart in New England following Tom Brady‘s departure for Tampa Bay: Jarrett Stidham.
As one source with knowledge of the situation explained it to PFT, the opportunity to play for coach Bill Belichick in the New England system and to re-energize his image were major factors in the decision. The move also gives Newton all of training camp to earn the starting job over Stidham and, in theory, Brian Hoyer.
The Patriots view it as a low-risk deal, and they’ve accepted all risks regarding Newton’s health because he’s dying to prove himself. He’ll apparently get that chance in New England.

Bill Belichick has always been high on Cam Newton
Posted by Darin Gantt on June 29, 2020, 6:13 AM EDT
Maybe it’s just because he’s never beaten him. Or maybe it’s because when well, Cam Newton‘s one of the most difficult puzzles to solve in the NFL. Either way, Patriots coach Bill Belichick has always had a high regard for the former MVP quarterback, whom he picked up on the cheap Sunday night. “When you’re [more]
Patriots first team to add and lose an MVP in same offseason
Posted by Josh Alper on June 29, 2020, 8:24 AM EDT
It has been an unusual offseason in many ways in the NFL and Sunday’s news that Cam Newton has signed with the Patriots did nothing to change that. Newton’s signing gives the Patriots an intriguing option to replace Tom Brady as their starting quarterback once the season gets underway in September. It also makes them [more]

Patriots fined $1.1 million and lose third-round pick for taping Bengals
Posted by Darin Gantt on June 28, 2020, 8:33 PM EDT

Normally, this kind of news comes out late on a Friday afternoon.
Instead, the Patriots have been busted for violating league rules late on a Sunday night, right after word came out they were signing former league MVP Cam Newton.
According to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, the Patriots have been fined $1.1 million and lost a third-round draft pick for their filming of the Bengals’ sidelines during a game last year.
Also, the team’s in-house television crew will not be allowed to film any games during the 2020 season, and “senior club officials” will have required training on league operation and game policies.
The man who shot the video of the Bengals sideline, David Mondilo, has also been banned from NFL facilities until further notice. He had previously been fired by the team.
In December, he filmed the Bengals sideline during a game against the Browns, but said he was doing it for an in-house video on an advance scout. He also put out a statement saying he wasn’t asked to provide the video to football operations staff.

Joe Delaney gets a monument near the pond where he died a hero
Posted by Mike Florio on June 28, 2020, 11:59 AM EDT

Monday marks the anniversary of one of American sports’ most overlooked heroes. This weekend, family and friends unveiled a memorial to Joe Delaney near the spot where he drowned.
For several years, we’ve commemorated Delaney’s passing on the anniversary of his death. Every year, people learn for the first time the story of a young man with his NFL career and entire life before him while trying to save three drowning children. This years, the 37th anniversary of the man who wore No. 37 arrives.
Via KNOE-TV, a monument to Delaney now sits at Chennault Park in Monroe, Louisiana, close to the pond where Delaney drowned.
“He jumped in that pond to save some children who were drowning, and he knew he couldn’t swim, but that didn’t matter to him. All he thought about was he was going to try to save those kids,” said Marvin Dearman, a rescue diver for the Monroe Police Department at the time the tragedy happened.
Delaney saved one of the children. Two of them drowned along with Delaney.
“Joe was a person that would give his shirt off his back to you,” his widow, Carolyn, said. “He was a kindhearted person. He was also helping out people, and he didn’t worry about Joe himself. He just worried about making the people around him happy.”
Before Saturday’s event, Carolyn Delaney and Joe’s surviving family members had not visited the site of his passing. The monument gives them reason to repeatedly return.
“We can come back and we have a place that I can bring the kids, the grands and the great grands to see the monument honoring Joe,” she said.
The monument should be a reminder for anyone else who sees it over the next 37 years.
“He died a hero, and there’s a story about him that will live on forever,” Dearman said.
It’s a story that we’ll tell every June 29 for as long as the lights are on. And it’s a story that, every year, plenty of people will be hearing for the first time.
