This is going to sound weird, but what the Texans did with Watt was the right thing.
a) He gets to choose where he wants to go
b) He gets to essentially announce he's leaving
c) You don't get the backlash of "we only got this" or "we traded him in our division?" shit.
The Watson thing though is becoming a joke. He's not going to have any higher of a market value than RIGHT NOW - and it's pretty clear they have burned some bridges with him in Houston. You let the QB carousel keep turning without entertaining trade offers - you are going to reach a point where you won't have either (a QB - as he sits out 2021) or assets to start a rebuild with.

Yeah they should just pit the Dolphins and Jets against each other for Watson already. You figure even if they don't like Darnold they could get Quinnen, the #2 pick, and another 1st from the Jets. Maybe moreWHO CARES why it says paper jam when there is no paper jam?

KC is still just too good to say the Colts would be a lock for the SB.
Colts have built a solid team - and have a metric shit-ton of cap space.
Besides, he can make throws and plays that even Rivers in his prime would struggle to make.

Houston wouldn't get near as much from the Colts. I guess in that sense, they've helped themselves by not saying ... sure, you want us to trade ya? Why not? Where do ya wanna go??
Teams should be beating down their door, even with the statement that they won't trade Watson ... and if he really, really wants out, he has to agree to go where the Texans want to send him, otherwise they keep the asset. Nice way to get around his no trade, assuming that was their plan. You figure either he comes around and stays, or just says yes to whatever trade they end up willing to takeWHO CARES why it says paper jam when there is no paper jam?

Watson has a no-trade clause.
It's why I said what I said about Watt.
Watt really didn't have trade value - and if you did trade him it would present an "image" of an insulting trade - i.e. getting a 3rd just because a team was willing to eat his contract. His career in the league really didn't deserve that. You give him his due, part ways mutually and let him control the reason he's leaving and say his peace his way.
The difference is Watson is early into a contract extension and has a TON of trade value - he's in the peak years of his career. He'd actually welcome a trade, but the Texans are being stubborn - in a lot of ways the way the Lions were with Barry and Calvin - even though those players were in the back halfs of their careers - their best years likely behind them.

Yeah that's why I said that what Houston is doing is a way around his no trade ... if that's their strategy. Saying nope we're not moving you is a better strategy to take ... whether they want to keep him or max his trade value. At least IMOWHO CARES why it says paper jam when there is no paper jam?

Stafford had trade value because he had two very affordable years on his deal.Forever One!
