    • Deshaun Watson has requested a trade

The Texans have settled on their next head coach, but David Culley’s imminent hiring doesn’t appear to have swayed quarterback Deshaun Watson‘s feelings about the team.

According to multiple reports, Watson has formally requested a trade away from Houston. PFT has confirmed, via a league source, that Watson made the request early last week.

A report over the weekend indicated that Watson was looking to get out regardless of who the team would hire as Bill O’Brien’s permanent replacement.

Watson has a no-trade clause, so he’ll have to sign off on any destination. Teams like the Dolphins, Jets, and Panthers have been mentioned as potential suitors for the 25-year-old’s services, although others may now wade into the fray and any deal will also have to bring back the right compensation for Houston to sign off on the trade.

With Matthew Stafford also on the block and uncertain quarterback situations for several teams, it’s shaping up to be quite an offseason when it comes to the most important position in football.

The Lions don’t seem to be getting as much interest in Matthew Stafford as expected

When it comes to potential interest in Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, the glass is currently two-thirds empty.

That’s the obvious import of the news that a third of the league has reached out to the Lions. A third of the league. Ten teams. For a 32-year-old franchise quarterback who is going to get his wish for a new franchise.

The Lions undoubtedly leaked that number to NFL Media in order to generate more interest. Surely, they expected to hear from more than 10 teams — especially since calls always get made when a key veteran player is available as part of the normal due diligence process.

The teams that should at least make the call include the Jets, Patriots, Dolphins, Steelers, Browns, Jaguars, Colts, Texans, Broncos, Raiders, Washington, Cowboys (as a potentially cheaper alternative to Dak Prescott), Bears, Vikings, Panthers, Saints, Falcons, 49ers, and Rams. That’s nearly two thirds of the league.

Maybe some teams simply aren’t intersted. Maybe some teams simply want the Lions to get nervous and thus desperate and thus willing to get whatever they can for Stafford instead of driving the hardest bargain.

Regardless, the Lions for now seem to be having a much harder time than expected when it comes to generating interest in Stafford.

        • Eric Bieniemy shut out again

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 28, 2021, 4:41 AM EST

For the second consecutive year, the Chiefs’ high-scoring offense is in the Super Bowl. For the second consecutive year, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is earning praise for his job at the helm of that offense. And for the second consecutive year, Bieniemy has been shut out of head-coaching jobs.

The news that the Texans hired David Culley to be their next head coach means that Bieniemy, who interviewed for all seven coaching vacancies this offseason, has been shut out again.

There was a sense from early in the offseason that Bieniemy would get passed over. No one disputes that he has all the credentials to get called up to a head-coaching job, and yet he still hasn’t.

Reaching the Super Bowl may have actually hurt Bieniemy’s chances. NFL teams aren’t allowed to hire coaches off another team’s staff until that team’s season is over, and teams sometimes decide not to wait for a coach in the Super Bowl. Bieniemy acknowledged last week that his primary focus has been on the Chiefs, not career advancement.

“It’s always good to be mentioned and have an opportunity to pursue your dreams. And obviously, yes, I do want to be a head coach,” Bieniemy said. “But when it’s all said and done with, my job is to make sure everything that we’re doing right now is not to take away from the goals we’re trying to accomplish. The only thing that matters [is] today we got better.”

Bieniemy’s focus remains on the Super Bowl, the game he keeps reaching while he keeps getting shut out of head coaching jobs.

          • You've got the Watson thing that will need to be sorted out first, and who knows what's going on with Rogers. The good news is, there's no way in hell the Texans will trade Watson to the Colts, so that will still be a market.

If I'm Watson, Denver would be high on my list - lots of young receiving talent, and a still solid D. Problem is, they pick at #8, so the Texans don't have a clear path to a new QB they want this year.

It’s a dumb take by Florio. Having 10-11 teams calling to do their diligence is plenty, as it’s really only going to come down to 2-3 teams seriously bidding for him. I’m sure those teams are among the ones that have already reached out.

              • 10-12 teams seems about right. Florio's casting a broad net on who "should" call. The Browns are not going to call. The Jaguars are not going to call. Houston's not going to call while they are trying to fix things with Watson. The Cowboys aren't going to call while they are still talking to Dak about a contract. Stafford will not be traded to the Bears, Vikings or Packers.

                • Well it's even more dumbed down by some of the teams listed that really shouldn't call and were never going to. I think they have enough interest to get a first.

Regardless of Watson's availability I think they were always in separate categories. His market is teams in the top 10. Slight chance in overlap IF neither the Jets or dolphins are interested with teams like Carolina, Denver, San Francisco possibly throwing in their QB's.

Detroit's market with Stafford's age was always gonna be teams behind us that may not be able to move up to draft a guy without to giving up multiple firsts. As someone else stated I think bare rock bottom minimum they should be able to get a first from the Colts.

Rodgers is the one that could fudge the haul Detroit gets. I don't think he's gonna actually hit the market though. Think it's just him pushing a raise.

And like Main stated, I highly doubt they'd trade Watson in the division. So Indy who gave up their 1st last year for a DT (albeit a great one) will have to give up at least that and some. Last year's 1st was #13 and this year's 1st is #21. And QBs go for more.

                    DEFOREST BUCKNERDL, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Colts acquired DL DeForest Buckner from the 49ers in exchange for the No. 13 overall pick.

With the 49ers deciding to give Arik Armstead a five-year, $85 million contract on Monday, keeping Buckner long term was no longer feasible. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports he has already agreed to an extension with the Colts that pays him $21 million per season, making him the league's second highest paid interior lineman after Aaron Donald. Buckner will massively reinforce what was both a middling run defense and pass rush for the Colts in 2019. Tomorrow is Buckner's 26th birthday.

We already know the previous NE "genius" would trade him in the Conference. It's unknown if the current NE "genius" GM there would trade him in their Conference.

Not so sure the Cowboys won't call. Stafford and Watson offer Jerry Jones some negotiating leverage with Dak, whose proving difficult to sign. Jerry Jones bringing a Texas boy back home is right up his alley, so to speak, so no I won't be surprised a bit if that's where Matt ends up. The only reason it isn't a slam dunk is that the Cowboys aren't very good. Stafford makes them better for sure, are they a Super Bowl team in a 5-year window. Jones ego may think so which may be enough to get him to trade for Stafford and let Dak find a new home.

                      • This whole thing about not trading in division or conference is stupid. If I interviewed a GM candidate and he said he was the type to not trade in conference or division ... not hiring that guy.

Eg if the Bears give the Lions the clear best offer for Stafford ... please trade him to the Bears!

                          • BEN ROETHLISBERGERQB, PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Steelers owner Art Rooney II said there would have to be "significant concessions" for Ben Roethlisberger to be back with the team in 2021.

Roethlisberger's $41.2M cap hit won't work for the Steelers with the reduction in salary cap, Rooney said. It's a loaded statement about a soon-to-be 39-year-old QB who struggled mightily through large parts of the 2020 season. Roethlisberger's adjusted yards per attempt has plummeted over the past couple seasons and he struggled with accuracy at times in 2020, coming off elbow surgery. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said "it’s reasonable to assume there is a chance [Ben Roethlisberger] is going to be back, certainly," shortly after the team was embarrassed by the Browns in the Wild Card round. Rooney's statement creates real questions about whether Roethlisberger will give it one last go with Pittsburgh. The Steelers will have to grapple with difficult salary cap decisions in the coming months.

Seahawks OL Chad Wheeler was arrested on assault and domestic violence charges.

Wheeler is accused of getting into a "physical fight" with his girlfriend. He was released Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. The Seahawks are "aware of the situation and still gathering information." 27-year-old Wheeler is a restricted free agent this offseason.
