The Saints must really thinkthey'rethisclose to being a contender. Yikes. Their OL is trash and fragile. Kamara will be suspended for at least 3 games, with no decent back behind him. Michael Thomas is on milk cartons down here, and he'll have to be cut, regardless. Their defense was 24th against the run. They'll have to nail every draft pick and pray nobody gets injured just to be mediocre. That might win the division, but nothing more.

They really needed to rebuild the trenches, suffer through a couple of off years and get to the other side of this thing. I'm not surprised Dennis Allen wanted this. I'm surprised Mickey Loomis approved. He's been GM for 21 years and must feel bulletproof at this point.

Saints should probably be the NFC South favorite right now for as little as it’s worth.

While Derek Carr is firmly a mid-tier starting QB, the rest of the division’s QBs are crap or will be a rookie. Short term benefiting move for the Saints.

I don't know about that, they know that the salary cap is a myth, so they are going to sign at 2-3 more big ticket free agents and will be a Super Bowl contender.

Baker Mayfield not beating them at the end of the last season hurt our chance to make the Playoffs last year, along with their Denver pick hurts our LA Rams pick with the other teams that are desperate for a QB, since they pick before us.

NO should have begun rebuilding procedures about 2 years ago….Loomis is trying to hold that roster together with duct-tape and bailing wire.

For all my schtick about “the salary cap is a myth”….Froot is correct that they’re going to have to pay the piper at some point.

After NOL posted…I went to look at Thomas’ contract. Oh man…he accounts for about 13.5m this year and would create 26m in dead cap if he’s cut. But he has to be cut…because he has a ‘24 roster bonus of 31m that guarantees in a week and a half (3/17/23).

they’ve already guaranteed 6 or 7 vet contracts to clear 36m space (before signing Carr)….and they need to clear another 28.

Loomis is a magician with the cap…but it’s unsustainable. Why keep tying yourself in knots to maintain mediocrity? The games he’s playing should be used while a team is trying to make a run…not in some futile attempt to remain atop the worst division in football.

Report: Aaron Rodgers spoke to Jets on Monday

As potential Jets quarterback Derek Carr was signing instead with the Saints on Monday, current Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers reportedly was talking with the Jets.

Just after midnight, former ESPN host Trey Wingo dropped this nugget on Twitter: “Per sources. Aaron Rodgers and the Jets had conversations today. While nothing is imminent Rodgers is open to the idea of going to NY.”

The report skipped over a pretty important step — the Packers giving Rodgers permission to talk to other teams. Maybe they had and it just wasn’t reported or disclosed. It’s hard to imagine that information being kept secret, however, given that most of the football world spent last week in Indianapolis.

It’s possible he didn’t get permission, and that there was tampering. That would seem to be very unlikely, however, given the stiff punishment imposed on the Dolphins for tampering with Tom Brady and Sean Payton.

The latest Rodgers news comes at a time when there’s a growing sense the Packers are ready to move on to Jordan Love. Indeed, when Packers G.M. Brian Gutekunst spoke to reporters last week at the Scouting Combine, he didn’t say, “We definitely want Aaron.” Instead, Gutekunst said the Packers absolutely believe Love is ready to start.

Aaron Jones: I don’t want Aaron Rodgers going anywhere

Running back Aaron Jones reworked his contract last month in order to remain with the Packers and he’s hopeful he won’t be the only Aaron to hang around Green Bay a little longer.

The topic of quarterback Aaron Rodgers‘ future came up during Jones’ Tuesday appearance on NFL Network and Jones made it clear that he wants Rodgers back with the Packers. Jones said Rodgers is “my quarterback, so I hope he’s back” and said he’s “especially” against the idea of Rodgers reuniting with Davante Adams with the Raiders.

Jones referenced another potential Rodgers landing spot as well and suggested that the Jets turn their attention to Jimmy Garoppolo instead of Rodgers.

“I definitely keep seeing that everywhere the Jets want him, but as of right now, he’s in Green Bay if he comes back and plays,” Jones said. “I don’t want him going anywhere. You guys can have one of those veteran quarterbacks. Jimmy G, he’s a winner and they can win with him. I like Jimmy G.”

If things don’t work out for a Rodgers return, Jones called Jordan Love “more than capable” and “ready for his shot” but that definitely looks like the running back’s Plan B for 2023.

The Packers fans in my life really want Rodgers gone. Just sick of the indecisiveness and non-stop drama over the last few years.

It kinda makes me want to see Rodgers stay in GB for that reason. Plus that forces an awkward position with Jordan Love. Kerby Joseph owns Aaron Rodgers nowadays… what’s to be afraid of? Let that huge cap number sink the Packers.

There would be additional entertainment in seeing Jets fans have a meltdown when it comes to QB. IF the Jets do trade for Rodgers, I assume it will cost multiple 1st RD picks. Packers have to eat some of that salary cap… raising the price of a trade.

Reports: Jakobi Meyers is expected to test free agency

Jakobi Meyers is the top-ranked wide receiver on our list of the top free agents in the league this year and it doesn’t look like the Patriots are going to keep him from hitting the open market next week.

According to multiple reports, Meyers is not expected to re-sign with New England or receive a franchise tag that would keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Players can begin talking with other teams on March 13 and all free agents will officially become eligible to sign with new teams on March 15.

Mike Giardi of NFL Media reports that the Patriots hope that Meyers will come back to them before agreeing to a deal with another team, but Dan Graziano of ESPN reports that the two sides have not been close in conversations thus far.

Meyers caught 67 passes for 804 yards and six touchdowns for New England last season.

Report: Sheriff’s Deputies enter Joe Mixon’s home after shots fired call, no arrests made

Sheriff’s Deputies in Hamilton County, Ohio, entered the home of Bengals running back Joe Mixon early Tuesday morning after responding to a “shots fired” call, but no arrests were made.

Fox 19 in Cincinnati reports that a juvenile was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The report says deputies initially responded to a report of shots fired at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday. During the night, deputies put crime scene tape around the house. At about 11:30 p.m., deputies were seen banging on Mixon’s door and telling the homeowner to come out. At about 1:30 a.m., a law enforcement officer arrived with an envelope of documents, and shortly after deputies entered the house and were seen searching with flashlights. The crime scene tape was taken down around 3:20 a.m. and deputies left without making an arrest.

A month ago, misdemeanor aggravated menacing charges were filed against Mixon, but those charges were dismissed the next day.

The 26-year-old Mixon has spent his entire six-year NFL career with the Bengals. Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said last week that he doesn’t know if the Bengals will retain Mixon, who is under contract with a cap hit of $12.8 million for the 2023 season.

At this point, Lamar Jackson should force Ravens to pick a franchise tag level

The Ravens reportedly intend to negotiate with quarterback Lamar Jackson up until the deadline for applying the franchise tag. At this point, Lamar Jackson should politely decline.

The chess match has developed to a key juncture. Jackson has the Ravens in check. They’ll have to make a big move on Tuesday.

They’ll apply either the non-exclusive franchise tag, or the exclusive version of the tag. Jackson should wait to see what they do.

Non-exclusive means he’d get to negotiate with other teams. He could sign an offer sheet with another team. The Ravens could match it, or they could decline to do so. Along the way, he could be traded.

Exclusive means he’d be the sole contractual property of the Ravens. But he’d have a one-year, $45 million contract, instead of the much lower amount for the non-exclusive tender ($32.416 million). He could still be traded, but the higher tender would give him much more leverage in long-term talks.

At this point, it’s Baltimore’s move. Why not see what the Ravens do? As explained over the weekend, it also helps Jackson to have the tag applied now. It sets the stage for the pricier second tag or the ultra-expensive third tag.

So at this point Jackson has to only do the one thing that most of us can do pretty well — nothing at all. By 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Ravens will surely do something.
