Yep. I thought for sure he was dead that night.

I am glad to have been wrong.

Would assume DeMeco Ryans should be top of the Texans wishlist if they were smart. Bring Ryans home and hire one of the best up and coming coordinators in the NFL. Though hiring an offensive minded HC to pair with Bryce Young could make sense… oh wait, the Texans blew the opportunity to pick #1! Ha, sucks to be them. Nick Caserio keeping his GM job is surprising to me. He’s not good at his job so far.

Broncos, Colts, Texans, and Panthers have a job opening.
It’s Black Monday. Assuming we will hear more news later. Pay attention to the Saints, Cardinals, Rams, and Commanders. There’s usually one surprising HC firing. I wonder who could be the surprise… Raiders, Browns, Titans, or Falcons… hmmmm.
      I’m so shocked!!!
      F#*K OHIO!!!

You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.

      • Titans fired four assistant coaches including the OC so they took the fall instead of the HC.

Yeah they will go to the Texans and threaten to trade to the pick to other QB needy teams, they will take what the Texans offer because they still get the non-qb pick of the draft plus the Texans are more than a rookie QB from competence, so any picks they get will project higher.

Eh, the Texans may also say, "Meh. We're fine taking whichever one of Young or Stroud is left at #2." It's really going to depend a great deal how much the Texans value one over the other.

            • and like others have said there is the possibility the Bears take Young and trade Fields for multiple picks.

True. I guess always figured Young would go first and be the guy any team wants. Not a 1a 1b type of year. In that situation what's an extra pick or two to make sure you get your guy.

As for trading Fields. If it was up to me I would. But i hadn't heard anything like that. Something tells me Chicago rates Fields too high even after this season. If they are going to trade him I think they have to do it before the draft. It will be harder to get better picks if everyone knows you can't start the season with him on the team.

                • Their GM and coach didn’t pick Fields. Now they obviously took the job knowing Fields was there and that the prior regime invested a lot of capital in him. But that’s a sunk cost at this point.

What we have no idea on is what conversations took place with ownership when these guys were hired and if they committed to trying to win with Fields or if the owner has given them free rein to do what they think is best for the team. Can’t imagine the McCaskey family is thrilled with an all time losing streak to end the season.

                  • and it may just depend on which one they can get more for......I would guess the first overall pick has much more value than Fields, but maybe a team like the Colts would prefer someone like Fields who has a couple years of experience? Another factor for the Bears is that Fields will be due that huge extension a couple years before Young/Stroud would be......I dont even know if Fields is worth a 5/250M deal at this point.

                    • Fields' running is sooooooooo good that he doesn't need to be the passer that other QB do ... but obviously he has to improve in that area. He sure seemed to have the ability at OSU

                      • Get Fields some weapons and a competent OLine. Need to see what you have in Fields with better support.
We saw the Cardinals bail on Rosen and draft Murray in 2019. Not the same situation… I see the Bears building up interest with that #1 pick and trading it to the Texans, Colts, Seahawks, Raiders, Falcons, or Panthers.

Interesting there’s only 5 NFL HC job openings right now. I assumed there would be more. Expecting to see something (Chargers, Cowboys, or Bucs?) come up after wild card weekend and still waiting on McVay. Someone on NFL Radio floated out the idea of 7 to 9 openings. Doubt it gets to that. There hasn’t been a surprise yet too.

The fewer opportunities = more likely Ben Johnson stays.

                        • I think McCarthy would have to get blown out in Tampa, but even then he's likely safe. Look how long Dallas stuck with Garrett. There have already been reports that Bowles is safe. The Chargers are the interesting one, especially after Staley fucked up last week and Williams and Bosa both got hurt and Herbert played deep into the game that they didn't need. But a change would probably only happen there if they could lock down Payton.

The other one that's out there potentially is the Rams. McVay apparently is letting all of his assistants interview elsewhere if they are asked. But on the pod I was listening to yesterday, they felt like Raheem Morris would be promoted to HC if McVay does decide to leave.

                          • Seems pretty likely that Johnson will get a HC job. At his age and with his great a job he did this season especially with clutch plays, plus the fact that he seems like he'd be a great interview ... way better than some retread. If the Lions needed a HC, I'd want him. Really hope the offense is able to chug along without him

                            • I’m not so sure…it was Johnson’s first year as an OC. The only job that I worry about him taking is Arizona (because they want “fix” gamer-Smurf)…but I think they’ll be looking hard at Gannon.

Denver needs someone with Chops (Ryans or Peyton)
Carolina would be foolish to let wilks go…Ryans or Gannon maybe
Colts are going to bring back Harbaugh
Houston is a raging dumpster fire and I think Johnson would turn down the job and stay put
                              AZ- Gannon or Ryans

And I didn’t even mention Ken Dorsey or Kellen Moore or Frank Reich up there (or Aaron Glenn).

Johnson will get his job next year…I don’t think there will be enough chairs when the music stops this year.

                              • The lack of job openings certainly works in the Lions' favor. Johnson's definitely a hot candidate, the Athletic guys were just gushing about him yesterday. That said, they had similar things to say about a number of these candidates, and as Nick points out that's before you get into the guys like Payton, Harbaugh, Reich, Morris, for those teams that might prefer stability/experience. Caldwell is apparently interviewing in Carolina too.

It just comes down to a lot of competition for limited openings.
