  • Whether anything will every happen, or get worse or not I have no idea.

I do believe the league won't change if fans don't speak up. Refs are people and they make mistakes. That doesn't mean those mistakes should be ignored, or that teams and fans should accept them.

In my opinion the league doesn't need to look at it as more or less officiating. Or whether it will or won't bring in fans. Clearly people will watch, buy and show up no matter what. The league needs to be focused on the quality of the game and equality for all teams. The fact that the Rodgers and Bradys of the world get more calls just because they are darling QBs, or some teams get more calls because they have bigger fan bases is BS, if that is really happening. A foul is a foul. Get it right and the rest falls into place.

Steve Wilks: Firing defensive coordinator was my decision, Al Holcomb will call plays now

Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks acted quickly to fire two of Matt Rhule’s top lieutenants on Monday, and Wilks said today that he wanted to see the team go in a different direction.

Wilks said he alone made the decision to fire defensive coordinator Phil Snow and assistant special teams coach Ed Foley, both of whom are longtime Rhule assistants who had worked for Rhule at both Temple and Baylor. Wilks made clear that he had no personal issues with either of the coaches he fired, but did want the team to get a fresh start.

“Two great men, two great coaches,” Wilks said. “It was my call, my decision. I just felt like I wanted a different approach moving forward, and that was all.”

Wilks said Al Holcomb, who was Wilks’ defensive coordinator with the 2018 Cardinals and also worked with Wilks on the 2019 Browns, will call the Panthers’ defensive plays. Holcomb is in his third season with the Panthers and has the job title of assistant head coach for defense.

      • That Panthers vs Rams game comes across as an easy win for the Rams… without thinking about it that is.

2020 Lions vs Panthers. Lions were favored and embarrassed in a loss to PJ Walker. Does Stafford get revenge vs PJ Walker…. I assume so. Panthers winning could help the Lions with draft position for multiple reasons. Go Panthers!

I remember everyone all excited about Holmes fleecing the Queens in the draft. And here we are in last looking up at them at # 1.

Wasn't me. It (Minn) was like one of those mock drafts I did. And who's in first in the division? He even picked some of the guys I liked. Even though Cine is out for the year.

But again, Our guys have not played yet so we need to wait to see how it turns out. The guys picked last year that have played have played okay. Hutch, Joseph, Rodriquez and Lucas.

They were also an underachieving 8-9 team last year with much more talent on the roster than us. Their main question this year would have been if the new coach would make things better or worse. So far it's better. They also haven't beat anyone that's been worth a shit so far. The Packers is their best win but they've been struggling themselves.

We won't really know who won the draft trade year 1.

Adams was a dick for pushing the guy like that but come on the players should 100% have the right of way here. That’s ground level not up in the stands. Yes there’s a human decency aspect that Adams completely disregarded but that guy should be aware of his surroundings.

Browns designate Deion Jones for return from injured reserve

The Browns acquired linebacker Deion Jones in a trade with the Falcons last weekend and they started the process of getting him on their active roster Wednesday.

Jones has spent the entire season on injured reserve, but the team announced that they have designated him for return. That opens a three-week window for Jones to practice with the team. He can be activated at any point in that window and would be shut down for the year if he is not activated.

Jones had shoulder surgery this offseason and spent most of training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

The Browns also announced that they have waived cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. He appeared in four games after being signed off the Bears practice squad and played exclusively on special teams.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said on Monday that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was not cleared for “football stuff” as he continues to recover from the concussion he suffered in Week Four, but he is reportedly set to take a step forward in the concussion protocol on Wednesday.

NFL Media reports that Tagovailoa will be on the field for the first time since being injured when the Dolphins kick off their practice week. He is expected to throw while he is out as part of the non-contact physical activity he needs to do in order to move toward clearance from the protocol.

It remains unlikely that Tagovailoa’s progress through the protocol will occur fast enough for him to play against the Vikings in Week Six, but, per the report, people around Tagovailoa believe he’s made “great strides” and is headed toward an eventual return to action.

Teddy Bridgewater also remains in the concussion protocol after a spotter ruled him out of last Sunday’s loss to the Jets, but he had not experienced symptoms as of Monday. He will start if cleared by Sunday’s game and seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson would be in line to play if Bridgewater doesn’t get the green light.

Matthew Judon is the AFC defensive player of the week

The Patriots shut down the Lions offense last Sunday and one member of the defense was singled out for recognition from the NFL on Wednesday.

Linebacker Matthew Judon has been named the AFC offensive player of the week for helping to shut down what had been the league’s No. 1 offense through the first four weeks of the season.

Judon had two sacks, four quarterback hits, and a forced fumble over the course of the afternoon. The fumble came on one of his sacks of Jared Goff and safety Kyle Dugger returned the ball for a touchdown.

The Lions game continued a strong start to the year for Judon. He is tied for the league lead with six sacks and has also picked up 11 quarterback hits through the first five games of the season.

                          PFT’s Week 5 2022 NFL awards

The football week that was isn’t really over until the various awards have been awarded. So let’s award some awards.

Five categories, same as always. Offensive player of the week, defensive player of the week, rookie of the week, coach of the week, and play of the week.

Each one, along with finalists, is spelled out below.

Offensive player of the week: Saints tight end Taysom Hill.

In a 39-32 win over the Seahawks, Hill racked up 112 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also had a 22-yard touchdown pass, on one attempt.

The one-time quarterback who is now a tight end rarely gets used the way he should be. On Sunday he was. And maybe that’s the key to getting the most out of the New Orleans offense.

Time will tell whether it continues. On Sunday, the Saints used Hill to his full extent, and he delivered like never before.

Other finalists: Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (seven catches, 25 receiving yards, four touchdowns), Bill receiver Gabe Davis (171 receiving yards, two touchdowns), Bills quarterback Josh Allen (424 passing yards, four touchdowns), Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson (12 catches, 154 yards), Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (193 yards from scrimmage, one touchdown), Browns running back Nick Chubb (134 rushing yards, two touchdowns), Commanders receiver Dyami Brown (two catches, 105 yards, two touchdowns).

Defensive player of the week: Colts cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

During a Thursday night stinker in Denver, Gilmore made key defensive plays both late in regulation (with an end-zone interception) and in overtime (breaking up the fourth-and-goal pass attempt) to deliver victory.

After the win, Gilmore had pointed comments for Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson.

“They tried me like two times in a row, the play before,” Gilmore said. “I knew he was going to come back, and I had to make him pay. He kept trying me, so I made him pay.”

The Colts are surely happy they paid Gilmore, an offseason free agent who could have signed with any team.

Other finalists: Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons (two sacks), 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Mosley (pick six), Vikings cornerback Cameron Dantzler (game-winning fumble recovery), Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald (two sacks).

Rookie of the week: Jets running back Breece Hall.

The Jets tailback had 197 yards from scrimmage, with 97 rushing and 100 receiving, in a 40-17 win over the Dolphins. He also scored a touchdown.

It was a breakout game for the second-round tailback, who has 275 rushing yards, 213 receiving yards, and three total touchdowns for the season.

Other finalists: Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner (interception, forced safety with intentional grounding call), Texans running back Dameon Pierce (99 rushing yards, one touchdown), Seahawks running back Ken Walker III (88 rushing yards, one touchdown), Texans cornerback Derek Stingley (one interception), Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe (17-21, 188 yards, one touchdown, one interception).

Coach of the week: Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

The Lions had been the highest scoring team in the league through four weeks. And the Patriots kept them from adding a single point to that total.

In a league premised on offense, the Patriots pitched a shutout. The game served as a reminder that, for the Patriots, the first four games of the regular season are usually an extension of the preseason. Now, the Patriots may be ready to make a run.

Other finalists: Giants coach Brian Daboll, Jets coach Robert Saleh, Ravens coach John Harbaugh, Bills coach Sean McDermott, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy.

Play of the week: Broncos failed fourth and one play in overtime.

No play generated more discussion in Week Five, even though the outcome was bad — for one team. Eschewing the run, or even selling the possibility of it, Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett dialed up a pass with the game on the line. He didn’t see, or didn’t try to see, wide-open receiver K.J. Hamler. He threw it toward receiver Courtland Sutton, and Colts cornerback Stephen Gilmore was there to break it up.

The news that Wilson went to L.A. the next day for treatment on his shoulder injury arguably excuses a lackluster performance by Wilson that night. It also merits more questions about why Hackett would think it was the right decision to put the ball in Wilson’s hands if his shoulder was indeed not right.

Other finalists: One-handed touchdown catch by Bills receiver Gabe Davis, 98-yard catch and run by Bills receiver Gabe Davis, one-handed catch by Bears receiver Darnell Mooney, Saints tight end Taysom Hill’s 60-yard touchdown run, Vikings cornerback Cam Dantzler ripping ball from Bears receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette to seal a victory.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

I think Tua's career is in a tenuous place.
