    • Giants assistant coach gets involved in training camp fight

Posted by Charean Williams on August 8, 2022, 10:45 PM EDT

Training camp fights are common, especially when it gets to the second week of practicing against the same players over and over again. But they don’t typically involve an assistant coach.

That happened Monday at Giants camp, according to multiple reports.

Dan Duggan of TheAthletic.com had a blow-by-blow account of the chippy sequence late in practice.

It began with running back Saquon Barkley lowering his shoulder and running over cornerback Aaron Robinson. That didn’t sit well with the defensive players.

The chippiness continued at the end of the next two plays with running backs Antonio Williams and Gary Brightwell. Brightwell then took a handoff that prompted center Jon Feliciano, who apparently had heard enough from Tae Crowder, to charge the linebacker.

Crowder and Feliciano went at it, and the sidelines emptied.

Linebacker Cam Brown sprinted into the scrum and dragged Feliciano by his collar, which led to offensive line coach Bobby Johnson pushing Brown in the chest, per Duggan. Feliciano and Brown threw punches at each other.

Per Duggan, “Johnson being the aggressor with a player seemed to cross the line,” and inside linebackers coach John Egorugwu had to be held back from going after Johnson. Johnson and Egorugwu were on the Bills’ staff together for two seasons.

New coach Brian Daboll stopped practice to lecture the team.

“He says that, ‘Losing teams do that.’ So at the end of the day, we’ve got to come out there and be physical, but we’ve got to be smart as well,” rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger said of Daboll’s message, per Duggan.

The team finished practice without incident.

      • Report: Dolphins have had trade talks about Preston Williams, Lynn Bowden Jr.

Posted by Josh Alper on August 8, 2022, 3:39 PM EDT

Dolphins wide receiver Preston Williams recently went public with a plea for more opportunities on offense and they could be coming with a different team.

Albert Breer of SI.com reports that the Dolphins have had talks with other teams about a trade involving Williams. Breer adds that wideout Lynn Bowden Jr.’s name has also come up in discussions with other teams.

Williams has flashed at times over the last three seasons, but he has only played in 24 of Miami’s 49 regular season games over that span. Bowden was a 2020 third-round pick by the Raiders who was traded to the Dolphins before the start of his rookie year. He had 28 catches in 10 games and missed last season while on injured reserve.

With Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, Trent Sherfield, Mohamed Sanu, and fourth-round pick Erik Ezukanma also looking for playing time at wideout, it’s no surprise that the Dolphins are seeing what they can get in return for players who might otherwise wind up on the waiver wire later this month.

        • Roquan Smith has requested a trade:

Roquan Smith's desire for a lucrative contract extension has yet to be addressed, and his camp's patience is running thin.

The linebacker has formally requested a trade, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

"The new front office regime doesn't value me here," Smith wrote in part. "They've refused to negotiate in good faith, every step of this journey has been 'take it or leave it'. The deal sent to me is one that would be bad for myself, and for the entire LB market if I signed it. I've been trying to get something done that's fair since April, but their focus has been on trying to take advantage of me.

"I wanted to be a Bear for my entire career, help this team bring a (Super Bowl) back to our city. However, they have left me no choice than to request a trade that allows me to play for an organization that truly values what I bring to the table.

"I haven't had the chance to talk to the McCaskey family, and maybe they can salvage this, but as of right now I don't see a path back to the organization I truly love."

Smith has consistently produced as one of Chicago's best defenders, earning two straight second-team All-Pro selections in his last two seasons. However, the Bears have yet to make Smith a serious offer for a long-term deal that would keep him in Chicago for years to come, prompting Smith to sit out of practice since training camp opened nearly two weeks ago.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Chicago's backloaded offer offended Smith because it wouldn't make him the top-paid LB in actual salary and included de-escalators that no other NFL contract of that magnitude featured.

The Bears will "respectfully wait to comment" on Smith's trade request, NFL Network's Stacey Dales reported.

The perception of Smith seems to vary depending on who you ask. He hasn't earned a Pro Bowl selection from the voting populace, but media members holding All-Pro votes haven't shied from recognizing his performance. Pro Football Focus doesn't hold the same opinion on Smith, whom the website sees as a middling defender, based on his best single-season defensive grade finishing at just 67.2.

Chicago seems to be following the same logic with Smith, who is due $9.7 million in the fifth and final year of his rookie contract.

The Bears are entering a new era under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus, two men who had zero involvement with selecting Smith eighth overall in 2018. Although Smith has proven to be a quality linebacker, he's not a player Poles and Eberflus picked, nor is he one they're scrambling to lock up -- at least not as of now.

Chicago is in the midst of a rebuild of sorts, turning toward a younger roster with long-term goals in mind. Smith would seem to fit into such plans, unless he's not the ideal fit for the new regime.

We'll see if another team likes Smith enough to attempt to pry him from the Bears.

I would love to trade for Roquan, but can’t see them trading to a division rival.

            • I think that more and more that LB is becoming a less valued position…at least in a lot of schemes. S is the new MLB.

that’s part of the case in Chi. The new DC doesn’t favor that position…and doesn’t want to build around the MLB position.

It reminds me of something the Lions would do (in the past 40 years)….hire a “scheme guy” who doesn’t value the best player on the team. They’re going to end up trading the guy for way under market.

                • Just don't do it at the opponent. It's not hard. It's not an unknown at this point.

No one is going to throw a flag for celebrating with your teammates or even the fans. It's no difference then when the NBA made Dikembe Mutombo stop wagging his finger directly in opponents faces.

That crap just causes unnecessary fights and drama that has nothing to do with the sport. If I want to watch boxing or mixed martial arts I'll watch that. I don't need to see 3 or 4 fights because someone is all in someone else's face because they got the better.

                  • Pete Carroll “surprised” Ken Walker III’s game is so well-rounded

Posted by Josh Alper on August 12, 2022, 9:09 AM EDT

                    USA Today Sports

Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny is set to miss Saturday’s preseason opener against the Steelers and that will give second-round pick Ken Walker III more of a chance to make an impression in his first NFL game action.

If it follows the impression that Walker has made in training camp, his playing time might be extensive come the regular season as well. Head coach Pete Carroll said at a Thursday press conference that Walker “just wasn’t ready” to pass protect at the NFL level when he left Michigan State, but that his work with running backs coach Chad Morton in practice has led to rapid improvement on that front.

“You asked about surprises,” Carroll said, via Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. “I’m surprised he’s so well-rounded. A runner, he’s blocking, again, I think I mentioned it the other day, but his pass-protection stuff, he just turned the page.”

Running backs who can’t pass protect can find it hard to stay on the field, so adding that to the arsenal should be a plus for Walker as he bids for playing time during his rookie season.

Mike Vrabel: Malik Willis needs to be more decisive

Titans rookie quarterback Malik Willis played his first game for the team on Thursday night and head coach Mike Vrabel’s review of the third-round pick’s performance could be boiled down to three words.

After the Titans lost to the Ravens, Vrabel said in a press conference that Willis needs to let it rip more often. Willis was 6-of-11 for 107 yards and Vrabel said in a postgame press conference that he felt the quarterback was too hesitant when it came to pulling the trigger on passes.

“He needs to try to throw the ball when guys are open, be more decisive,” Vrabel said. “We’ll evaluate that, see if there’s a timing issue or what’s going on. Wanted to get him out there, see how he responds. There were some good plays and obviously some plays we’re gonna have to look at the timing on the release and if we’re making the right decisions.”

Vrabel said Willis’ hesitancy led him to make a quarterback change earlier than expected in the third quarter. The rookie ran five times for 38 yards and a touchdown, but said after the game that he “can’t continue to rely” on making plays with his legs rather than his arm. He’ll get another chance to run the offense against the Buccaneers on August 20.

What were Deuce and AG doing after every play? They said it themselves, they can’t help it because they’re competitors.

Such an irritating and panickity rule, especially when it’s enforced like last night giving a first down for a guy making a momentary “incomplete” sign. If that’s a point of emphasis then the NFL have their priorities all wrong and a quick glance at social media says most of their fans/pundits loathe it.

”Is this likely to start a brawl?” would actually be a good threshold for throwing a flag. That was clearly not, let them play.
