The journey to the 2022 season will start to pick up some steam on Monday.

Rookies for the Bills and Raiders are set to report to training camp to kick off the week. The two AFC teams are the first teams in the league to have any of their players report this summer.

Eight more teams will welcome their rookies on Tuesday and 24 teams will have players in the building by Sunday, July 24. The remaining teams will have their rookies and veterans report for camp on July 26.

The Raiders will be playing in the Hall of Fame Game on August 4 in Canton, Ohio. They’ll take on the Jaguars, who have rookies and veterans in the building on July 24, in another big step toward the start of a new season.

NFL games are 20 of the 22 most-watched sporting events so far in 2022

Most of the NFL games that will be played in 2022 have not been played yet, but the NFL has already dominated the American sports television landscape this year.

With Major League Baseball at its All-Star break and the sports year at approximately its halfway point, SportsMediaWatch.com has put together a list of the most-watched sporting events of 2022, and NFL games dominate the list.

The NFL’s 20 most-watched games so far this year are all in the Top 22 most-watched sporting events overall. The Super Bowl, as always, is the most-watched sporting event, followed by the NFC and AFC championship games, 10 other postseason games and several regular-season games from January (Cardinals-Cowboys in Week 17 was the most-watched regular-season game so far in 2022).

The most-watched non-NFL sporting events so far this year are the College Football National Championship Game and the night of the Olympics that NBC aired immediately following the Super Bowl.

Among the Top 50 most-watched sporting events so far this year, 25 are NFL games, eight are the Olympics, seven are college basketball NCAA Tournament games, six are NBA Finals games, two are college football games, one is the Kentucky Derby and one is The Masters.

            • Jason Peters: I’m staying in shape and waiting for a team

Posted by Myles Simmons on July 20, 2022, 11:33 AM EDT

Jason Peters isn’t done quite yet.

Or at least he doesn’t want to be.

After 11 years with the Eagles, the veteran left tackle started 15 games for the Bears last season. Now at 40, he’s looking to play at least one more season.

In an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Peters said he’s been staying in shape and waiting for a team to come calling. And he’s not just looking to join a club that’s contending for a Super Bowl in 2022.

“I just let my agent talk to those teams and he’ll hit me and let me know who’s interested and who’s not,” Peters said. “Looking for an upcoming offensive line, good team — or a playoff team. Either/or is good for me, because I can pass my torch on to some guys who are trying to get better, the younger guys, the new generation. Or if I get on a team with some vets, they already know how I rock, and we can just go into the playoffs and make a run and try to win another ring.

“But right now, either way is good for me because I can teach or I can sit back and listen and learn from other veterans who have played this game, too. So either way is good.”

Peters added that he doesn’t have a time frame for when he’d like to put pen to paper on a contract.

“Whenever the opportunity comes, I’m going to give it one more run at it and try to get me another ring, or pass on some knowledge to these young kids, up and coming,” Peters said. “But I don’t have a time frame on when I’m going to get signed. You know, last year, it was two-and-a-half weeks into training camp. So whenever the time comes, I’ll be ready.”

Peters began his career way back in 2004, signing with the Bills as an undrafted free agent. He became a starter in 2005 and went to two Pro Bowls with Buffalo the team traded him to Philadelphia in 2009. Peters is a two-time first-team All-Pro and a nine-time Pro Bowler.

Giants announce 1980s-1990s uniforms will return for two games this season

The Giants haven’t given their fans much to celebrate in recent seasons, but this season they’re celebrating some great years of the past.

Today the Giants announced that they’ll play two “legacy games” this season, in which they’ll play in the uniforms from their great teams of the 1980s and 1990s, when they won two Super Bowls with Bill Parcells and Lawrence Taylor.

That will include replacing the script “NY” logo on their helmets with the underlined “GIANTS” logo on the navy blue helmets with white facemasks and scarlet stripes.

The Giants will also paint the end zones at MetLife Stadium to look like the end zones from Super Bowl XXI.

The two legacy games will be October 2 against the Bears and December 4 against the Commanders.

                • Report: Browns have no interest in Ndamukong Suh but could consider Sheldon Richardson

A report last week indicated the Browns have interest in free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Mary Kay Cabot, who covers the team for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, disputes that.

“Despite reports that the Browns are interested in five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, they’re not,” Cabot writes. “The Browns have been linked to Suh, 35, at various points this offseason, but he hasn’t been on their radar.”

Cabot adds that if the Browns decide to sign a veteran defensive tackle, they could consider Sheldon Richardson. Richardson, 31, played for the team in 2019-20 but returned to the Vikings last season rather than taking a paycut from the Browns.

The Browns, though, want to see how their young defensive tackles perform in camp before seeking help. They have fourth-round choice Perrion Winfrey and third-year pro Jordan Elliott and signed free agent Taven Bryan in the offseason.

Suh remains a free agent, and the Bucs will not re-sign him after signing Akiem Hicks.

                  • Deshazor Everett pleads guilty to reckless driving in death of his girlfriend

Former Commanders safety Deshazor Everett pleaded guilty to reckless driving Tuesday, Peter Hailey of NBCSportsWashington.com reports. Everett was at the wheel in a December 2021 car wreck that caused the death of Olivia Peters.

Everett originally faced an involuntary manslaughter charge after an investigation by the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office found he was driving more than double the posted speed limit of 45 mph. That charge was reduced to reckless driving Tuesday.

Everett, 30, is scheduled for sentencing Sept. 8, his attorney, Kaveh Noorishad, told Hailey. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor in Virginia and carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a maximum fine of $2,500.

Everett was seriously injured, and Peters was pronounced dead at a local hospital after the vehicle Everett was driving hit several trees and rolled over.

Washington cut him in March after seven seasons with the team.

                    • Potential first overall pick Will Anderson says he’d never sit out to stay healthy for the draft

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 19, 2022, 3:45 PM EDT

                      Getty Images

Alabama pass rusher Will Anderson probably would have been the first overall pick in this year’s NFL draft if not for the NFL rule requiring players to be three years out of high school before they can turn pro. Anderson has shown so much to NFL scouts already that there’s not much he can do this season to improve his draft stock, but there is one thing he could do to harm his draft stock: get injured.

Given that, Anderson might be tempted to sit out the 2022 college football season to keep himself healthy for the NFL. But Anderson says that’s not a consideration.

“Oh no,” he said, via TheAthletic.com. “That’s not how I am. I love football too much. I can’t sit out a year and not play football.”

Now that college players can profit off their names, images and likenesses, Anderson can make some money at Alabama, though nothing close to what he’ll make in the NFL.

“I’ve been doing NIL deals,” Anderson said. “I know during the season I told you guys I wasn’t going to be doing any deals, but I actually just started my own brand and it’s called A3 Athlete. I take control of my own brand, you know, with the whole NIL thing. It was kind of overwhelming at first because you don’t know a lot of the verbiage and terminology when it comes to deals. So with this A3 Athlete, it’s going to help players such as myself or younger players under me come together with my advisory team or with people on my team and help go over contracts. Go over those different things to take the load off for you and your family to read over everything that’s going on.”

The rule requiring players to wait three years after high school to play in the NFL is a raw deal for players like Anderson, who should be getting ready for an NFL training camp right now. But NIL makes the rule a little easier to stomach.

                      • Devon Allen says he’s fresh after long layoff from football, much faster than he was in college

Fresh off competing in the 110-meter hurdles at the track and field world championships, Devon Allen is hoping to make the Eagles’ roster. And he says he’s ready.

Allen said on the Dan Patrick Show that although he hasn’t played football since the 2016 season at Oregon, all that time on the track has made him a better athlete while saving his body.

“The good thing is I haven’t been getting beat up in the NFL for the last six years,” he said. “I’m much faster than I was in college.”

Allen said he once lost to Tyreek Hill in a track meet, when Allen was in high school and Hill was in college, but that he’s confident he’s now faster than Hill.

“Right now I think I’d get him,” Allen said.

Although he’s extremely disappointed to get disqualified for a false start, Allen said he will be back on the track after the football season ends.

“It’s not going to be the last [race] of my career. Definitely the last one of the season because I’ve got training camp next week,” Allen said.

Although he’s no lock to make the Eagles’ roster, Allen hopes to get an opportunity to stretch the field on offense and return kickoffs and punts.

Raiders first, Lions last in NFL in ticket revenue

The Raiders moved from their dilapidated stadium in Oakland to a beautiful new venue in Las Vegas with the idea that they could make significantly more money selling tickets. It worked.

Las Vegas led the NFL in ticket revenue with $119 million for the 2021 season, according to Sportico.com.

The Raiders actually didn’t draw particularly big crowds last season: They ranked 25th in the NFL in tickets sold, and they had a high no-show rate. But the Raiders had by far the most expensive tickets in the NFL, so even without selling many tickets they were able to lead the NFL in ticket revenue.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Lions ranked dead last in ticket revenue, with $51 million. After decades of losing on the field, Lions fans are increasingly deciding that it’s just not worth the it to buy tickets at Ford Field.

                          • Buccaneers To Sign TE Kyle Rudolph

July 20th, 2022 at 9:34pm CST by Ben Levine

Tom Brady has a new tight end. The Buccaneers have signed Kyle Rudolph, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). It’s a one-year deal for the veteran tight end.

[RELATED: Vikings, Buccaneers Interested In TE Kyle Rudolph]

We heard recently that the market for Rudolph was starting to heat up. The Buccaneers were listed among the known suitors, as were the Vikings, Rudolph’s former team. Rudolph was also connected to the Broncos and his former GM George Paton earlier in the offseason. Ultimately, it was the Buccaneers who managed to land the free agent, and they now have a tight end who can somewhat replace the production of Rob Gronkowski, who announced his retirement earlier this offseason.

It’s been a bit since Rudolph has come close to even matching Gronk’s 2021 numbers, but at the very least, he’ll provide Brady with another reliable option at the position. Rudolph will likely compete with Cameron Brate for offensive reps, with rookies Cade Otton and Ko Kieft now competing for the third TE spot on Tampa Bay’s roster.

The Giants inked Rudolph to a two-year, $12MM deal in March of 2021, but following a season where the tight end finished with only 26 catches for 357 yards and one touchdown, he received his walking papers. Prior to his brief stint in New York, Rudolph spent the first 10 seasons of his career in Minnesota, earning a pair of Pro Bowl nods. He ranks sixth in Vikings history in receptions (453) and receiving touchdowns (48), and he’s 10th in receiving yards (4,488). Rudolph saw reduced targets during his final seasons with the organization, but he was still relatively consistent in the yards-per-catch category (including a career-high 11.9-yards per reception in 2020).

Former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel spent his first five seasons in New England, but he says he was never on board with coach Bill Belichick’s program.

Samuel said on the I Am Athlete podcast that many of his teammates in New England bought what Belichick was selling, to their own detriment.

“Some of them be brainwashed with that Patriot Way. I ain’t going for none of that. I don’t know what no Patriot Way is,” Samuel said, via MassLive.com.

Samuel played out his four-year rookie contract and then spent one year playing on the franchise tag before leaving for the Eagles in free agency. He said Belichick never wanted to pay him what he was worth.

“All of them is company men, talking about Patriot Way,” Samuel said. “I don’t know none of that. I’m here to get money, take care of my family, the same way Belichick is here to take care of his family, get his money. So when you try to hold my money back and you want all your money, I ain’t got no respect for you.”

Samuel spent four seasons with the Eagles and then finished his career with two seasons with the Falcons.

The Browns may need an extra body at quarterback for the start of the 2022 season and they’re reportedly looking at a few options this week.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that two of those options are AJ McCarron and Josh Rosen. Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs are the current backups to Deshaun Watson, who is facing a potential suspension under the Personal Conduct Policy.

McCarron tore his ACL while playing for the Falcons in the preseason last year. The 2014 Bengals fifth-round pick appeared in 11 games and started three times during his time in Cincinnati before moving on to stints with the Raiders and Texans. He also started one game in Houston.

Rosen was the 10th overall pick in 2018, which put him nine spots behind former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Cardinals picked him, but traded him to the Dolphins after picking Kyler Murray the next year and he wound up in Atlanta as Matt Ryan‘s backup after McCarron’s injury last season.
