  • Just get rid of the Pro Bowl. It’s unwatchable IMO.
Not to forget how Pro Bowl recognition is such a joke of a thing on a player’s career resume. For example: Goff having more Pro Bowls than Stafford. Mac Jones having the same amount of Pro Bowls as Stafford.

Eagles believe Jordan Davis can have a role rushing the passer

Posted by Josh Alper on May 24, 2022, 3:53 PM EDT

      USA TODAY Sports

Defensive tackle Jordan Davis was an impactful player at Georgia because of the way he tied up offensive linemen and stifled opponents who tried to run the ball between the tackles.

Davis was good enough at that job to be the 13th overall pick in the draft, but the Eagles think he can play a more expansive role. Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said at a Tuesday press conference that Davis is “a big, explosive, violent man that can win one-on-one” and that opens the door for him to remain on the field against the pass.

“A lot of the same things, and then there are going to be certain times where we let him cut his ears back and rush,” Gannon said. “At that place, obviously they play really good football there, they didn’t ask him to do that a lot. But he definitely has the skill set to do that when you start looking at how he moves and his body and his traits. He definitely will project to affect the game in the pass game, as well.”

With Haason Reddick joining Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, and Josh Sweat on the outside, interior players like Davis, Fletcher Cox, and Javon Hargrave could find advantageous matchups in passing situations. If the rookie proves adept at handling them, the Eagles defense will look like a tough one to topple.

      • NFL expands Rooney Rule to require interviewing a minority for QB coach vacancies

The NFL has expanded the Rooney Rule and will now require all teams with a vacancy for the quarterbacks coach to interview at least one minority for the job.

The league announced the change to the rule today, as part of its diversity seminar ahead of this week’s league meeting. Amid criticism that there aren’t enough Black head coaches, the league has been trying to ensure more opportunities for minorities to work their way through the ranks in key coaching positions.

The NFL initially adopted the Rooney Rule in 2003, requiring NFL teams to interview a minority candidate before hiring a head coach. The rule was expanded in 2009 to require NFL teams to interview a minority candidate before hiring a new general manager as well. In 2020 the rule expanded to coordinators, and in 2021 the rule expanded once again to require two minorities to be interviewed for head-coaching vacancies.

Now the league is expanding the Rooney Rule again, at a time when the rule itself is being criticized. Some in the coaching community, most prominently Brian Flores, say all the rule does is lead to teams conducting sham interviews. The league needs not only to ensure the interviews are conducted, but to ensure that the interviews are genuine.

Sam Darnold confident he can be one of the best QBs in the league

Sam Darnold is currently the No. 1 quarterback for the Panthers, but the team has not been shy about looking around at other options and there’s still a chance that they could make a move to change the makeup of the depth chart before the season gets underway.

That hasn’t done much to shake Darnold’s belief in himself, however. Darnold said on Tuesday, via David Newton of ESPN.com, that he is “confident I can be one of the best quarterbacks in the league” despite four years that have provided little evidence to support that feeling.

Darnold also said that he’s working to improve his footwork, which got “chaotic” during the 2021 season. That effort fits with Darnold’s overall approach to preparing for the season amid chatter about his short- and long-term future in the NFL.

“Everyone, including myself, knows the situation. . . . For me, it’s focusing on what I can do right now,” Darnold said, via Darin Gantt of the team’s website.

Unless the Panthers make a move for Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo, it seems likely that Darnold will be under center in Week 1. How long he stays there will likely come down to how much improvement comes from that self-directed focus.

          • Ravens agree to terms with Kyle Fuller

The Ravens have added some depth to their secondary.

Baltimore announced on Tuesday that the club has agreed to terms with cornerback Kyle Fuller on a one-year deal.

Fuller, a Baltimore native, was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Bears in 2018 and 2019. He was also an All-Pro in 2018, leading the league with seven interceptions and 21 passes defensed.

Last year, he appeared in 16 games with 10 starts for the Broncos, recording four passes defensed and three tackles for loss. He was benched at one point, but reclaimed a starting role down the stretch.

The 14th overall pick of the 2014 draft, Fuller has 19 career interceptions and 86 passes defensed in 112 games with 104 starts. He missed the 2016 season due to a knee injury.

With Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey both returning from season-ending injuries in 2021, Fuller at least provides insurance should one or both not be ready for the start of 2022. With all three healthy, the Ravens’ secondary should be significantly better than it was in 2021, when the club finished dead last in passing yards allowed.

            • Fox CEO says reports of $375 million over 10 years for Tom Brady is “directionally right”

Posted by Mike Florio on May 24, 2022, 12:28 PM EDT

Two weeks ago, Fox turned to sports world on its head by announcing that Tom Brady will become the No. 1 NFL analyst whenever he retires from playing.

Not long after Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced the deal, Andrew Marchand of the New York Post (owned by Fox Corp.) reported that the deal has a value of $375 million over 10 years. A Fox spokesman responded by saying this: “What has been reported isn’t an accurate description of the deal and we have not released details beyond what was disclosed on our quarterly earnings call.”

In a new interview with Sara Fischer of Axios.com, Murdoch was asked about the reported value of the Brady deal. Murdoch said that the number is “directionally right.”

That seems to be a more appropriate way of saying “dead-on balls accurate.”

Murdoch also said that Fox and Brady started negotiating the deal “months ago.”

It remains to be seen when Brady will get started. It all depends on how much longer he plays. However, he now knows that, whenever he wants, he can make $37.5 million per year from Fox to not play.

                        • For the Pro Bowl, maybe let players be represented by their developmental backups. For example, if our Swift were voted to the Pro Bowl, we'd let Godwin go and he'd wear #32 with "Swift" on his nameplate. Then all of the players would have incentive to actually play hard to put good tape out there.

I can't even imagine that happening. He's way too classy for that. But another player retiring early instead of playing is really not the goal you want to work towards.

Seems odd that a man his size that can move pretty well isn't a pass rushing threat? You'd think he would blow up the pocket every time.
