It doesn't have to be. He had 1,400 yards receiving on 77 catches last year (with Jimmy G. as his QB), 5th in the league despite not being even top 20 in catches (Tyreek Hill for comparison only has 1 season where he had more receiving yards and that was barely). Durability is certainly an issue, as I think he had problems staying healthy in college. But all the more reason to get away from carrying the ball so much and taking hits he doesn't have to.

Oh, I don't think the Lions will or should be involved in this. Great player, but they need to build up the roster in too many places right now to be giving up a bunch of picks and handing out a massive contract.

I probably wouldn't trade a #2 pick for Samuel but I don't think it's a preposterous deal. The chances are good that Samuel will outperform the value of whatever they pick at #2 in this year's draft over the next 4 years. But I'm sure whatever is bugging Samuel aboit San Francisco would be at least the same in Detroit.

"[The 49ers] have wanted to make inroads on a long-term extension with Deebo Samuel, want to make him one of the higher-paid receivers in the NFL," Rapoport said. "He has just been, as of now, unwilling to accept or engage in any offer or any discussion. And the reason for that, from my understanding, is he simply wants to be elsewhere.
"And there are some questions and frustrations from his standpoint about his usage. He really is a top receiver. He also takes a lot of hits. He's used like a running back, put all over the field, and it just does not sound like he is comfortable, as of right now, with the way he is being used.
Deebo Samuel was the San Francisco 49ers' do-everything player in 2021. He caught passes. He ran the football out of the backfield. He even threw a touchdown...

I think the issue is that Deebo doesn't want to be used like a running back as much as San Fran did (which is understandable; teams have REALLY dicked over "hybrid" players in contract negotiations in the past, and running backs tend to take a LOT more of a beating than wideouts do).

I’m leaning towards the idea that Deebo is traded because of how wild this NFL offseason has been. Nearly a dozen crazier moves in the last month.
The question is if we see anything relating to AJ Brown, Terry McLaurin, or DK Metcalf wanting out.
As for the Lions, it’s a tough call. Deebo is such a special player when healthy. It would be very entertaining for us fans. The loss of draft capital makes me hesitant about the idea. Lions defense needs so much more added to it. These high draft picks can help the defense problem long term. I’m not even sure if you want to go all in on Goff at this time.
Is offering pick #34 and the Rams 2023 1st too much? Too little? Fair? Spitballing. That Rams 1st should be a late 1st… again… because Stafford is legendary.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

I'm a bit leery about all this. Deebo's game IS his physicality to a large degree. I get that he had a great Y/R number last season, but part of the reason he was so good is that he's such a dog in the best way possible. If he's about to get paid huge money and at the same time wants a less physical role ... well, sure I'd still want him but that's a red flag comboWHO CARES why it says paper jam when there is no paper jam?

We’re not a WR away and we don’t even have our QB of the future. No way the Lions trade for him. It’s not Holmes MO to make such a move while building the right way.F#*K OHIO!!!

Running the ball with a WR once or twice out of the backfield is a nice little change up. Deebo was leaned on more and more in the second half of the season, getting no less than 5 carries a game starting in week 9, including 5 games of 8-10 down the stretch. I can completely understand why he would not want to continue that (or get paid extra to do so).
That said, it sounds like there’s some other shit going on too, “he just wants out of SF” was one of the lines from that Ian Rappaport article. And his agents have not even engaged SF in contract talks.

I think 20-25m per year would end his issues with the team.
Everything that team does is centered around him (as well as what opposing Ds are doing)….
IMO…SF is trying to treat/pay him for what he does as a WR, when they should be paying him like the star of the team (which he is). My guess is that he doesn’t mind doing the RB stuff, as much as is being portrayed by the media anyway, but he fully understands the toll that takes on his body and what he means to the team.
Offering him a contract that puts him among the top WRs…isn’t going to get it done. He deserves a contract that puts him among the highest paid players in the league.
The stupid QB contracts have probably made this issue worse…an avg starting QB makes 30m per year, When Debo looks at what he does and what he means to that team…15m PY isn”t going to cut it (and it shouldn’t).
In short…Debo may have issues, but they’re issues that a shit-ton of money can solve.
