  • Resignation of Bruce Arians won’t be regarded as a surprise by some

Posted by Mike Florio on March 30, 2022, 8:38 PM EDT

In the immediate aftermath of the unexpected unretirement of Tom Brady, we caught wind of a theory that Brady’s return was possibly tied to the eventual exit of Bruce Arians. (Check out the attached video from Monday, March 14, if you don’t believe me.)

Eighteen days later — and on the evening that the annual league meetings ended — Arians has stepped down.

Peter King has the story. Arians is out, Todd Bowles takes over. And while Herculean efforts will be undertaken to create the impression that Brady didn’t directly or indirectly attach his return to a coaching change, many will believe that Brady came back only after he knew that Arians wouldn’t.

The timeline is too narrow. The circumstantial evidence is too strong. Rich Orhnberger, a former teammate of Brady’s and a close friend of Buccaneers assistant A.Q. Shipley, posted multiple tweets regarding the dysfunction that had developed between Brady and Arians. It should have been expected. Brady is all-in, all the time. Arians was essentially semi-retired. At some point, the people doing all the work begin to resent the ones who aren’t doing very much at all. And if, as Orhnberger claimed, Arians was swooping in and revising the game-planning efforts Brady and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, at some point people were bound to get pissy.

They’ll deny that Brady’s return had anything to do with Arians leaving. Because of course they will. Brady may say something at some point, aimed at pushing the idea that he didn’t nudge Arians out. And Brady himself said last June that 90 percent of the things he says publicly aren’t true.

Really, if Brady hinged his return on Arians not staying, Brady would NEVER admit it. The Buccaneers wouldn’t, either.

That said, if the Bucs did indeed have a choice to make between another year with Brady and another year with Arians, it’s a no-brainer. Brady, not Arians, is the reason they’re requiring new season-ticket holders to buy season tickets for two years. Brady, not Arians, is the reason the team is a high-level contender. The Bucs, who have a long history of unceremoniously and unexpectedly firing coaches, would have been stupid to say “no thanks” to Brady if Brady, or someone on his behalf, made it clear that Brady expected certain changes to be made, if he came back.

And the changes Brady expected quite possibly included the biggest possible change that could be made to the coaching staff.

Put it this way. Arians’s departure either was tied to Brady’s return, or it was all one hell of a coincidence. Most will believe it was not one hell of a coincidence.

    • Daniel Snyder remains on four NFL committees

Posted by Mike Florio on March 30, 2022, 7:25 PM EDT

As Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder remains suspended (or voluntarily detached) from management of the team, he continues to be involved in multiple league-wide committees.

      As in four of them.

JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington noted earlier today that Snyder serves on these groups: legalized sports betting; business ventures; fan engagement and major events; and international. While Snyder’s ongoing presence on these committees doesn’t conflict with the idea that he’s not involved in day-to-day operations, it looks weird.

Then again, everything about the situation looks weird. Everything. So it actually makes sense that Snyder has been nudged away from running his team but not excluded from performing duties usually reserved to people who are directly involve in the operation and management of the franchise.

On Tuesday, Commissioner Roger Goodell said that Snyder remains not involved in the day-to-day operation of the team, and that Snyder and Goodell will soon talk about the situation. Looming over any such interactions is a new investigation into specific allegations of misconduct targeted at Snyder and an ongoing Congressional effort to force the league and the team to disclose any, some, or all of the evidence developed by attorney Beth Wilkinson during her 10-month investigation of years of alleged misconduct within the organization.

The first one. The grapevine says Brady didn't think Arians worked hard enough.

Brady is used to leaving the building and the HC still being there.....and Arians liked to take off early which was leaving Tom and the OC to do a lot of the planning.

        • We are finding out Tom Brady is every bit the diva Aaron Rodgers is. He should have stayed retired when Matthew Stafford stole his soul.

Still annoyed by Commanders. Didn't think I could've possibly hated that team any more than I did.

            • We officially have room for another safety

              Falcons sign safety Dean Marlowe

The Falcons have added veteran safety Dean Marlowe to the secondary.

Marlowe signed a one-year contract today, the Falcons announced.

Last year Marlowe played 16 games for the Lions, with nine starts. Prior to that he spent three years in Buffalo and two years in Carolina.

Although the Falcons are a rebuilding team, they haven’t hesitated to sign veteran players to one-year contracts. The 29-year-old Marlowe can provide some short-term depth on defense and special teams but probably won’t be around by the time the Falcons are in contention.

              • Brett Favre continues to be entangled in Mississippi political scandals

We’ve known for a while about Brett Favre receiving $1.1 million in Mississippi welfare funds for an apparent no-show appearances. (He has since paid the money back. Slowly. But without interest.) A new report from Mississippi Today has more details that tie Favre to potential political corruption in Mississippi.

A lengthy and detailed story by Anna Wolfe explores the connection between Favre, a drug company in which he invested, public welfare funds, and former Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant.

Favre reportedly hoped to make at least $20 million from biomedical startup Prevacus, which touted a treatment for concussions. Favre, per the report, may have leveraged Bryant for funding and political influence.

“It’s 3rd and long and we need you to make it happen!!” Favre texted Bryant in late 2018.

“I will open a hole,” Bryant replied.

Within days after that exchange, Favre reportedly met with welfare officials to reach an agreement on a $1.7 million investment in Prevacus. Prosecutors contend that money was stolen from federal funding aimed at providing services to the poorest residents of one of the nation’s poorest states.

Two days after Bryant left office in early 2020, he agreed to accept stock in the company.

Bryant admitted to Mississippi Today that the timeline “doesn’t look good,” but he claims he never intended to accept Prevacus stock and that he didn’t read his text messages closely enough to realize that the company had received public funding.

Said Favre in a text to one of his partners in Prevacus, “Don’t know if legal or not but we need cut him in.” Favre later said this: “Also if legal I’ll give some of my shares to the Governor.”

For more on the situation, check out the article. Although Favre has yet to be accused of anything not legal, it’s another bad look for the Hall of Famer.

                • Saints sign Taco Charlton

Former first-round draft pick Taco Charlton is heading to New Orleans.

The Saints signed Charlton, a pass rusher who most recently played for the Steelers, today.

The 27-year-old Charlton was drafted by the Cowboys out of Michigan with the 28th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He struggled in Dallas and was released early in the 2019 season. He then spent time with the Dolphins in 2019, the Chiefs in 2020 and the Steelers in 2021.

Charlton, who has 11.5 sacks in his NFL career, will compete for a roster spot in New Orleans.

                  • Saints releasing Blake Bortles

The Boat is back on the market.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, quarterback Blake Bortles asked for and was granted his release from the Saints on Tuesday.

Bortles signed with New Orleans in late December last year when both Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian were placed on the COVID-19 list and missed a matchup with the Dolphins. Bortles subsequently signed a futures contract with the Saints in January.

But the Saints now have quarterback Andy Dalton to back up Jameis Winston, which likely cut off Bortles’ opportunity to be the team’s No. 2 quarterback.

The No. 3 overall pick of the 2014 draft, Bortles spent the first five years of his career with Jacksonville, compiling a 24-49 record. He’s completed 59.3 percent of his passes while throwing for 103 touchdowns and 75 interceptions.

Since departing Jacksonville, he’s also spent time with the Rams, Broncos, and Packers.

                    • PETE CARROLLHC, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll "called out" NFL owners on the league's lack of coaching diversity.

Carroll reportedly spoke about the issue for ten minutes during last week's NFL owners meetings in Florida. Florio said Carroll's comments "were sufficiently strong to make people in the room uncomfortable to the point of angry." He told general managers that "the hiring of minority candidates won't improve until owners accept that there are candidates out there different than themselves." Carroll's impassioned speech comes as the league faces allegations of discrimination in hiring processes -- issues raised by former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. "He just went off," a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. NFL owners were reportedly "not happy" when they got wind of Carroll's comments. In its ongoing effort to diversify the NFL's coaching ranks, the league recently adopted a policy that would encourage teams to hire people of color and women who would "work closely with the head coach and the offensive staff, with the goal of increasing minority participation in the pool of offensive coaches that eventually produces the most sought-after candidates for head-coaching positions." The league's Rooney Rule -- requiring teams to consider coaches of color in their hiring cycles -- has done little to increase coaching diversity.

Being racist isn't singular to a race. Goes to show why we can be better. The majority of people I have met, regardless of color here at least want to be better.

My sister spent some time there and she was treated pretty bad as we're pretty light skinned. She said she was called whitey and some other things there. She said they also called her a colonizer. They also don't look at AA as part of their race.

But Jaadam, you know better. We should not bein the business of dictating how people rule their country. We got enough on our own plate. We're rotting because people see bad and ask why they can't be worse. When this country was GREAT, we asked what we can do better, not worse.
