  • Za’Darius Smith: I love Baltimore, but things didn’t work out

A couple of days after the Packers released edge rusher Za'Darius Smith, word broke that he had agreed to a deal to sign with the Ravens.

It seemed like a natural fit since the Ravens needed some help with their pass rush and Smith started his career with the team, but things fell apart quickly. Smith agreed to a four-year $35 million deal that could go up to $50 million, but reportedly came back with a different proposal that the team passed on and Smith resumed looking for a new team.

Smith found one in the Vikings and he was introduced as a member of the team at a press conference on Tuesday. Smith didn’t get into details of why he’s not in Baltimore, but cited the presence of former Packers assistants Mike Pettine and Mike Smith in Minnesota as something that is appealing to him.

“Love Baltimore, want to thank Baltimore for giving me the opportunity, but things didn’t work out,” Smith said, via Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “In my heart, I just wanted to be somewhere I knew the coaching staff. Didn’t have to go that far, three hours down the road [from Green Bay].”

Smith’s deal in Minnesota is for three years and $42 million with a chance to be worth as much as $47 million and that ultimately may be the story of why he’ll be a Viking and not a Raven in 2022.

    • Dolphins seem to have an entertaining offense on paper. A LOT of familiar names. High draft picks or skills players that once had a noteworthy status in the fantasy football world. Imagine if Raheem Mostert can stay healthy for example.
Austin Jackson, Liam Eichenberg, and Solomon Kindley are backups on their OLine now… recent draft prospects that were surely discussed here.
It’ll be interesting to see what Mike McDaniel can do with this supposedly talented offense. Bringing over the Kyle Shanahan offense. I think it would be entertaining to see Tua have a breakout season. Live up to the old “Tank for Tua” reputation.

        • Deon Bush to sign with Chiefs

Kansas City is adding some depth at defensive back.

Safety Deon Bush is signing with the Chiefs on a one-year deal, according to agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.

Bush had spent his entire career with the Bears. Chicago picked him in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. He mainly played special teams with the club over his six seasons there.

But in 2021, Bush appeared in 14 games with four starts and played 36 percent of Chicago’s defensive snaps. Bush recorded a pair of interceptions and five passes defensed last season — both of which were career highs.

In all, Bush has played 72 games with 12 starts since 2016.

          • Ya, that was crazy. I do think there is something that connects the DaVante/Hill moves. Both of their QB are making near $50 per. Those teams can't afford to pay a WR $25-30 per. I guess this happened when HOU traded Hopkins after DeShaun got paid.

With the yearly infusion of talent in the draft at WR, these teams can't afford a high priced QB and WR. The WR may be becoming the new RB. Just so much supply available every year, it doesn't make sense to overpay these guys.

Terron Armstead agrees to five-year, $75 million deal with Dolphins

The Dolphins are signing left tackle Terron Armstead to a five-year, $75 million deal plus incentives, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports.

              Armstead visited Miami on Monday.

He was the highest-ranked available free agent left on PFT’s top 100, coming in at No. 4.

Armstead, 30, has spent his entire career in New Orleans, which made him a third-round choice in 2013.

He has played 97 games with 93 starts and has made three Pro Bowls.

Armstead missed nine games last season with elbow and knee injuries. He underwent offseason surgery on his knee on Jan. 18.

Chiefs trading Tyreek Hill to Dolphins

Tyreek Hill‘s talents are headed to South Beach.

The Chiefs are trading Hill to the Dolphins in exchange for five draft selections.

                Kansas City will receive a 2022 first-round pick, 2022 second-round pick, 2022 fourth-round pick, 2023 fourth-round pick, and 2023 sixth-round pick in exchange for Hill.

The Dolphins are also expected to give Hill a contract that guarantees him $70 million over the next three seasons.

The Jets were also a potential destination for Hill, but he’s headed to a different team in their division.

Hill leaves Kansas City as one of the best receivers in franchise history. He is fourth on the team’s all-time list with 479 receptions, fifth with 6,630 yards, and fourth with 56 receiving touchdowns.

A fifth-round pick in the 2016 draft, Hill made the Pro Bowl in each of his six seasons and was a first-team All-Pro three times — twice as a receiver and once as a returner.

Hill caught 111 passes for 1,239 yards with nine touchdowns in 2021.

Now he’ll pair with Jaylen Wadle to form a strong receiver tandem in the AFC East.

                            • Vikings still talking to Patrick Peterson, unlikely to re-sign Anthony Barr

Two veterans of the Vikings’ defense remain unsigned free agents, but only one appears to have much of a chance of remaining in Minnesota.

Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah expressed cautious optimism about the possibility of bringing back cornerback Patrick Peterson, but said linebacker Anthony Barr will be tough to bring back.

He texted me the other day,” Adofo-Mensah said of Peterson, via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. “Pat Pete’s a great person, a great player in this league for a long time. … You want to make sure you respect a player of his caliber, his expertise in this league, but also the reality of the situation we’re in from a salary-cap standpoint. Again, those conversations are ongoing, and we’re trying to work through those problems.”

Adofo-Mensah sounded less interested in bringing Barr back.

“I had a conversation with him the other day,” Adofo-Mensah said of Barr. “That’s going to be a tougher situation to navigate. Never say never. Obviously, there are things salary-cap related with acceleration and things like that that made that kind of a challenging deal.”

Peterson is No. 85 and Barr is No. 93 on our list of the Top 100 free agents.

Danielle Hunter feels great after two “pretty unfortunate” years

Danielle Hunter was the subject of trade talk until restructuring his contract and receiving a vote of confidence from new General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

The Vikings edge rusher missed all of 2020 with a neck injury, and he played only seven games in 2021 before tearing a pectoral muscle.

After returning to work with Rischad Whitfield, “The Footwork King,” on Wednesday in Houston, Hunter said he is fully healthy again.

I feel great,” Hunter said, via KPRC-TV. “The last two years were pretty unfortunate, but I just got to stay positive and have positive people around me. My family’s been there, coaches have been there. So I’m ready to go this season.”

If Hunter is healthy, and new addition Za'Darius Smith is healthy, look out. The Vikings will have one of the top pass rushing duos in the NFL. But it’s a big “IF.” Smith played only one regular-season game and one playoff game last season because of a back injury.

Hunter has played 85 career games and totaled 60.5 sacks, 90 quarterback hits and six forced fumbles. Smith has played 91 career games and totaled 44.5 sacks, 112 quarterback hits and eight forced fumbles.

“I see him every year with the Packers,” Hunter said. “He goes against our quarterback and sometimes I just know what he’s going to bring to the table before he even gets out there. So it will be a good combo between us and all the defensive linemen we have.”
