It sounds like Whitlock hasn't watched any of the games and doesn't know much about the team. It certainly isn't Rapinoe's fault for their stodgy play, this is a transition team and at least three of their best players are not there because of injuries. The coach has not been up to snuff his whole tenure. They have been extremely uncreative and won't change the formation. When they continued to force it up the left flank to Smith with three defenders on her, it wasn't Rapinoe doing that.
Rapinoe.is 38 and basically limited to super sub status, but the times she has been in there she has at least had some creativity. She lays it on thick and the Fox bots have been waiting to pounce, but they probably should watch the games.
Froot: The USWNT lost a preparatory match against an under-15 squad of boys. They also lost to some old Welshmen.
The fact is that this iteration of the USWNT has taken on Rapinoe's attitude of not singing for the national anthem and not showing respect for the flag. Their interviews (save for three) show a level of disdain for the US that NO OTHER national team shows for their country.
I've watched all the matches (well, as much of the Portugal snoozefest as I could). I agree that Rapinoe has played well when she is in there. I don't understand why the coach would not start her because getting the first goal is a big deal.

Wait a second here. Now. The athletes must sing the national anthem? They can't stand respectfully and not sing?
2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

Ah man. I sooooo want to live in a country where I can't show disdain for my country. I want to live in a place where saying the slightest thing will get me disappeared.
Geezer, let's you and me move to North Korea. They won't tolerate such crap. I can't wait to be forced to bow down and touch my head to the ground before a statue of the great leader, live in squalor, and constantly fear anyone near me slipping up which would result in my placement in a concentration camp due to the three generations law.
"Yeah, we just... we don't want them to go. So that's our motivation."
Dan Campbell at Green Bay, January 8, 2023.
I can get the idea that if you have been selected to represent your country to the world, that a certain level of decorum and respect should be expected. I can also understand bristling at athletes that don't present that decorum and respect initially.
But at the same time, there are absolutely valid reasons to not display that decorum and respect, even if you are chosen to represent that country. The black athletes that went to the Olympics during the Civil Rights era, for example... that was a very valid reason to say, "Ya know what... fuck respect to the flag. My country hasn't earned it."
And we hadn't!
As for the women of this soccer team? I guess we can have differences of opinion as to whether their complaints are valid or not. I think they're more valid than not. There certainly is a heavy degree of ingrained systemic misogyny in society as a whole that makes it extremely difficult for female athletes to make a valid living doing what men do. I don't think it's unfair for these athletes to note that a lot of them go overseas because they get paid better than back home, and that misogyny also plays a factor in that.
(These athletes also note that it isn't particularly great in Europe or Asia, merely that its better.)
That said... sure, there is a very stark reality that humanity as a whole really doesn't have terribly much interest in women's sports outside of a handful of exceptions. The pool of compensation for the women's team is going to be significantly smaller, and without really knowing all that much about the financials of the USWNT, I can't really make a valid judgment of just how much the players are getting shafted, and how much more they should reasonably expect.
"...when Hibernian won the Scottish Cup final and that celebration, Sunshine on Leith? I don’t think there’s a better football celebration ever in the game.”
The people at Fox rooting against the women are far more anti-American. Clowns like Megan Kelly, Clay Travis and Jason Whitlock are trying to get relevance by their bull shit takes.
Andrew Tate is a sex criminal. People making that comparison are stupid.
Rapinoe hasn't said much at all this tournament because she is a super sub, the reason these Foxbots are saying what they are saying now is because she is a supersub at the end of her career. They all got a big giant red ass when the USWNT won the World Cup in 2019 and she was the star. Those unpatriotic take masters were rooting against that team and they got a giant shitburger served to them.
Complaining about people not singing the national anthem is high comedy. I went to the Tigers, you wouldn't believe how many people didn't sing the national anthem.
In comparison, the other teams are singing and getting in to their national anthem. America doesn't. So. It just doesn't look good. And tell me a nation that's less misogynistic than the U.S. please name them.. you haven't been around the world much..
You might have misunderstood what I was saying. I was referring specifically to the pay being better in Europe and Asia, which is why a lot of woman's athletes go overseas to play rather than stay in the USA, especially in soccer.
It's more basketball than soccer is where that occurs. That's why we had the Brittany Griner situation, another saga where the allegedly patriotic Foxbots wanted her to rot in a Russian penal colony.
Things are changing because in the last 4 to 5 years the Premier League clubs have upped the spending significantly. It's where the world is catching up, the only player on the USWNT who plays overseas currently is Horan. The same issues that the Men's game faces in the US is the same on the Women's side, the coaching is a little suspect at all levels, so the MO is to beat them with athleticism. Eventually the players are going to have to go to Europe like the men have for the better coaching. The USWL is OK because it hasn't gone out of business but you are seeing some of the issues here.
But with the best them with athleticism model still had the Dutch dead by the last 20 minutes. They just didn't convert, if Morgan stays onside, a lot of this bleatings by the Whitlocks of the world get no oxygen.
The country falls short in so many ways that yes you can look back and see all kinds of crap to be upset about.
But the ideals that the country was established on are the highest that humans can obtain. Therefore they will never be met.
It would probably be nice to sing about a country that the words weren’t about killing other humans lol.
But countries are built on killing other people. Can’t get around it. At least they hid the parts of the anthem that talked about slavery lol.
Sing proudly about the ideals, not the realities.
Whitlock should not have written that piece the way he did. He didn't need all the petty personal shit about her appearance or comparing her to some sort of serial rapist...but how you guys can look at the behavior of Rapinoe and the other players and decide that it's the all media's fault is a little short sighted.
Whitlock wasn't wrong at a base level. Rapinoe's shtick is selfish and disingenuous. She rages against the US for the misogyny, sexism, and inequality that's keeping her (wages) down...when really it's just that no one cares about women's soccer on a global scale. It's like RC cola blaming the fact that Coke/Pepsi make more money on racism/misogyny/sexism ...when it's really because RC Cola tastes like women's soccer looks (inferior).
Like I said, I think the personal shit is unnecessary and waiting until the team (and Rapinoe) looked completely broken before unleashing these attacks is some weak-tea...but I'm not sure the base argument he made is wrong.
From my point of view...I don't think this is an either or type scenario., Whitlock and Rapinoe are both assholes.
