See, here's the rub. Nobody, except for a few nut jobs wants true socialism in this country. What is wanted is the kind of socialism that we already have. The kind that pays for your roads and snow plows, your police forces, fire departments, military, colleges and universities, your medicare, medicade and social security etc. You know, the kind that the majority of Americans favor.

When I bring that up, I get "You don't even know what socialism is. Venezuela!".

Well, yes, I do. "You" don't know what it is.
He thinks his little country town/village can handle itself without BIG government aid. That is the biggest joke. I work in a community that refuses to pay for it's police through mileages. Big Republican community that says they are law and order. As long as BIG GOVERNMENT pays for it. Since I've worked here they have shot down every mileage. Over 10 years. So the state police has to come in to help a community that could help itself. And the cops work for the same money they would at McDonald's. I always offer them a job with where I work.

There is no bigger indication of support then financial.

That example is not singular to that area either.

Still waiting for Rocket Ron's trickle down. Going on 30+ years. It's gonna happen any day now.

Lol. Dude spoke up and seconded the video as if he made it. Then he backed that up with a Kindergarden level one liner. What a joy.

It's Jimmy Kimmel level video splicing.

    Narratives

And even if Biden is slipping, he isn't an orange hateful bigot, empowering bigots world-wide. What a bunch of cowards. Be men and own up to your sh!t. You spin everything else into some fantasy level crap with not facts or details, might as well throw in a "superior race" bomb and rant about somehow your supposed to be a Patriot = Traitor. Maybe this is why the people over there want to turn off your lights.

Look up The Julian Simon Bet.

It explains how markets call into production those items that are supposedly scarce. I remember when Reagan was elected and lifted price controls. My local gas station pegged the price of gas at $ 5.00/ gal because no one really know what would happen. Oil had been so heavily regulated during the Carter years ("new" oil v. "old" oil). What actually happened in about a week was about a 30% reduction of the price at the pump compared to the price under price controls.

The higher price of oil and the record profits of oil companies should boost production. If BP makes a killing, it has money to invest in new drilling and exploration. Either that or pay 30% of their profit to the government. They would drill without the religious fervor of the Greens.

Fusion energy has been "about 25 years away" my whole lifetime. But, if something like that ever happened (similar to the fracking revolution) I believe the Greens would be foursquare against it. Free and clean energy would end the CO2 craziness. The Greens would never let that happen. Why are we not building more nuclear plants? Who here would favor building 3 large nuclear plants in the Mohave Desert to supply LA, SD, and Phoenix? I would.

        • It also shows how substutes have an effect on prices. You know, renewable energy?

"Greens" would not let it happen?

          • Fusion Energy being [x] number of years away is a lot like ANY drastic change in infrastructure. It's always a ways off until that one breakthrough makes it not be.

As far as fission energy goes, you can thank the ghosts of Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and the Cold War poisoning that well; and frankly that's something you can pin on the fossil fuel industry just as much as "green" energy advocates, if not more.

            • Good article. I particularly appreciate the final summary which is that we need more nuclear energy, not less and that natural gas is a clean-energy alternative.

What this 2016 article does not deal with is fracking. The writer seems to be all in favor of nat gas, but he clearly does not envision the fracking revolution and the Trump regulatory revisions that allowed the US to become a net energy exporter. We are talking about high gasoline and heating prices now because the Dems are, as a matter of policy, trying to force the country to become dependent on wind and solar by restricting the building of refining capacity. That is just a fact. High energy prices are considered a social good by your political brothers.

Now, would you favor building 3 nuclear plants in the Mohave Desert in order to supply LA, SD, and PHX with energy?

I assume you read about the Julian Simon Bet. Cheaper substitutes do indeed drive down prices for expensive goods. When those substitutes cost twice as much as the good they are "replacing", they are not substitutes at all. Green energy costs far more than fossil energy Do you really mean that green energy will drive down prices for fossil energy? Just because Dems are in the process of making fossil energy more expensive to boost green energy, doesn't mean green energy is in any way a "substitute" good. Dems are raising taxes on working Americans and spending that money to support the Chinese and the Dem donors who have a financial interest in the green energy scam.

In a free market, solar and wind would be talked about as a future source of energy. In PHX, the total cost of generating a KW of energy from solar is four times the cost of generation with gas. And we have massive amounts of nat gas. Take your religion out of the picture, and energy would be clean and cheap. Don't force your religion on me, you tyrant. Heh.

Now, focus, would you favor the three nuclear plants in the Mohave Desert?

                • I'd say we need more nuclear energy where other forms of energy aren't particularly viable.

The biggest issue with solar and wind and hydro and "green" alternatives is that they aren't very good unless you are in areas with an abundance of sun, wind, or fast moving water. We're simply not to a level of efficiency that would allow, for example, a solar array providing consistent power for the Upper Peninsula. That's just fact, and I really dislike the "green energy" advocates who don't care that it's not (they aren't many, but they tend to be loud about it).

But at the same time, I do agree we need to start reducing our fossil fuel usage, and by a massive amount. Nuclear (even just fission) would be an excellent bridge until either "green" options improve to the point they are viable everywhere or the critical breakthrough is made in fusion energy (I do believe that fusion energy is the most likely long term solution for the world's power needs, for what it's worth). There's a lot of fearmongering from both the far left "green" advocates and the fossil fuel industry to create this image that every nuclear reactor is another Chernobyl waiting to happen, and it needs to stop.

Agree. The safest place to work is in a nuclear plant. There are safeguards on top of safeguards on top of other safeguards. Chernobyl and 3-mile were catastrophic failures to maintain those systems.

I have an Environmental degree, and I think we do need to slowly decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. I work in Mid-Michigan and more and more people out here are getting those wind fields. People are starting to realize that they can make good consistent money by selling power back to the energy companies. It's good for farmers. I like that. I agree that it isn't viable everywhere though.

                    • In a related note, the NRC just approved a small modular reactor which would be produced offsite and then moved.

The best approach is probably more smaller modular reactors rather than just 2-3 big ones, but the lack of qualified/experienced nuclear engineers and cost of security makes that difficult at this point.

                        • Chernobyl was a willful rejection of those systems, in fact. The Soviets pretty much had to actively try to melt that reactor down, and that was even after several years of what amounted to gross negligence.

Three Mile Island was actually an example of how (relatively primitive) safeguards worked. When you think about how bad it should have been had the entire thing been allowed to go, the (relatively) minimal damage was exceptional.

"Modern" reactors (I put that in quotes because there hasn't been any significant redesigns in about a decade) are, as you said, damn near one of the safest places to be, especially considering how dangerous other contemporary power plants can be.

Am I saying every city should have a fission reactor planted right in the middle of downtown? No. I'd say a lot of population centers have alternatives that can do the job. But a rational approach to nuclear power rather than the fearmongering that is being used would be real nice.
