I miss the days... not all that long ago.... when I used to go once a month or so with a group of co-workers to the brew pub after work for a couple of hours..... One of the people who would be there was Andrew. Very much a conservative politically. And we had great conversations. Disagreed about most everything. And were still good friends, who enjoyed our discourse. Seriously, we both spent most of our time laughing. That is what political 'arguments' used to be like. I wonder where he is these days......

Anyhow, today's republicans speak a different language. There isn't even anything logical in their takes. My freakin daughter's mom's side of her family, long super over top holier-than-thou 'Christians' has a bunch of Q fans in it. The seniors won't see a doctor these days if they are sick because,... reasons.... Bill Gates and Jugo Chavez I guess.

Everything with republicants these days is a life and death battle. They can't have discussions. They can't be wrong. About anything. So of course they don't give a fuck about any of the gun violence. They don't give a fuck about anything until it impacts them. They care when the power in their house is shut off - and fly to Cancun. They give a fuck when hurricane hits their home. Otherwise, it's bootstraps motha fokka, and thoughts and prayers.

I just can't tell if:

1.) I was insulated most of my life, and gave way too much credit to my fellow Americans, imagining the vast majority of them to be good people. But it was really always this way...
or
2.) 30% of the country has just recently lost it's fukking mind, denying science, living with their own facts in a 'reality' of their own creation with made-up boogey-men driving their paranoia. Like scientists, people with an alternative lifestyle, and people who don't hate the same people as them.

The world is exhausting lately. Really dark. And I grew up with drills in school on what to do when the nukes dropped. Those cold-war days seem quaint. Now the threat is the guy sitting next to you.

Republicans are the party of doing nothing. About anything. Ever. This world is their goal.
Democrats are the party never willing to do anything to offend their beloved republican colleauges. Nothing will signifigantly change is their tag line.

Because they all serve the same donors / owners. Nothing will change until we get money out of politics.

I’d like to start by saying I’m not a democrat or a republican. I’m a nihilist, and haven’t voted in any election since I cast a vote for Clinton in ‘92. I firmly believe that all politicians, democrats and republicans, serve one master (and it ain’t the common man). The same people who were running the world 500 years ago are still running the world….politics is the wool that’s been pulled over your eyes to make you believe you still have choice. I look at people who have a firm belief in one political side is good and the other evil….like they’re rubes or are intellectually challenged.

The problem with your entire statement is that you completely absolve democrats (and yourself by extension) of any responsibility in the way the discourse has changed /regressed. Read what you wrote..”these days republicans….blah blah blah”. Like “these days democrats” are so fucking great. Both sides are massive hypocrites.. for instance racism (which is a rallying cry of the Democratic Party): Democrats regularly go off on how racist republicans are….but several Democratic members of congress spout anti-Semitic nonsense so regularly that no one even notices anymore (and they put them on the cover of Time magazine).

Republicans are the party of do nothing? That’s both sides of the house chief….not just the elephants in the room. The dems have had both sides of the chamber for a while…they can’t even pass minor legislation (such as federal Marijuana law that makes sense..it’s legal in like half the country now). You’re going to have to enlighten me to all this great stuff democrats are doing….because they seem equally unproductive from my point of view. Although…Biden did accept that 10 billion dollar payoff to absolve big pharma from any responsibility in the opioid crisis (screwing the real victims), progress?

I could say the lefties fired the first shot when the orange-fella won the election…things got very personal that day. Maybe it was before that, when politicians started declaring anyone who didn’t cast a vote their way as a deplorable human being. Or Democratic officials urging their constituents to follow republicans to their homes or to restaurants for the sole purpose of harassment.

Republicans haven’t changed….the game changed on both sides. If you can look all of the political behavior in the last 8 (or 100) years….and think “it’s the republican’s fault”….you’re part of the problem. Politicians are vampires who have convinced you that it’s better for you to polarize your views and deify your neighbor for thinking differently than you do….than to open a discourse and meet in the middle. I guarantee someone is going to read that and say there is “no middle” on some issues….but there’s always a middle ground….just fewer people willing to compromise.

I would agree for a very long time. Both parties are shitty. But one has gone from shitty to openly evil. There is a good chance that evil is flooding both sides, but the right broadcasting it and that vile hatred is spewing beyond the political extremists to the average right wing voter now.

The media companies that are the largest (and most profitable…a very important fact) are the ones that sell polarized opinions and fear. CNN is telling you that all republicans are racists and Fox tells you democrats are all commie baby-killers.

Great post. Growing up those drills seemed so scary when I was really young. And then a major pest later on, but, necessary. Growing up in a town that has (at least in my lifetime) been close to half Black and White there were a lot of differences, but we were all taught that Russia was our enemy.

Now I guess they are ok for some people if they help them win an election? Would that not tell you that you are probably on the wrong side when your country's worse enemy WANTS your candidate in power?

The exasperation of all this is it teaches people that they can do whatever they want and there should be no ramifications as long as their narrative is half solid.

Today, I had a jackaz call me a derogatory name and then got mad because I got upset. WTF???!!! Earlier in my life this incident may have led to jail time. I guess I was supposed to just take it with a smile on my face. Of course he changed the story to try and cover up calling me the derogatory name. This same guy constantly wants me to "wash his truck."

That's about the truest post ever. Both parties are completely outdated as there's so many blurred lines but one thing is for certain. None of them give a shit about the greater good of the everyday voter / tax payer. Its all about money and power and keeping it for them. The gov't stopped working for us a long time ago.

Both parties were shitting their pants when Ross Perot ran in the 90's and that man ended up being right about a ton of things. The middle class would get squeezed and America would sell its soul and outsource jobs instead of keeping things local. He was a good man that was attacked by the media and both parties.

I remember my dad saying something that I remember to this day "I agree with what he's saying but I have to vote Democrat because that's who i've always voted for."

The problem has become that for both sides everything must be in absolutes. Social media has caused a lot of it. As a Democrat you're not allowed to want universal health care but also think extending that to free college is too much. You can't be a republican and want small government but understand there are good exceptions to it. We've made the Manchin's, Sinema's, Cheney's and Romney's into the villains of their parties because they dare to have minds of their own and work with the other party to find solutions.

The desire to work together is gone. My oldest brother is very conservative while I'm liberal. We talk about politics all the time. It's not hard because we both actually listen to eachothers viewpoints and see if we can find middle ground. Ninety percent of the time we can. Politicians just aren't trying anymore. Somehow it needs to shift from the other side being your opponent you need to beat into your teammate you need to find a way to work with to win the game. Both sides love America and want to see it succeed as best it can, we just disagree about how to get there.

Even the most divisive issues often have a lot of potential middle ground. We have to start acting like it again. When I speak of Republicans doing nothing about the gun issue it's not an attack on all conservatives. It's a call-out based on the fact they've had bills in front of them that many conservatives support but they won't sign because they fear they will lose the NRA's backing.
