It’s not just the US. We get it in the UK too - a lot of it has come out of the US though. There is no shared reality anymore and there is such mistrust of the “MSM” from some people think that “BasedPatriot” and “DrKekistan” on YouTube and Telegram are telling the real truth that the MSM don’t want you to hear about.

Now the media do lie and exaggerate, even politically. I remember watching US news networks going insane nightly about Trump/Russia, which turned out to be largely exaggerated (I always thought the notion of that chaotic shit show campaign being part of a huge international conspiracy was far-fetched) for example. But that doesn’t mean that a guy hawking hydroxychloroquine is telling the truth.

Its also clear that foreign adversaries are stoking this discord by using our relative freedoms against us and funding cranks all over the Western world. Putin has backed far right and far left politicians all over Europe. Imagine if we could freely pump information into Russia and China - both have become more authoritarian than ever while pushing conspiracy theories and nuttiness into the West’s body politic using a network of paid shills and useful idiots. The end result is that no one trusts anyone, liars are emboldened and the political systems break down in a post truth world.

It’s pretty depressing frankly and I don’t see how you can truly combat it. Trump winning again unconstrained by polls and an electorate would be a disaster in my opinion.
