I surely didn't make it up, Nick's boy Trump did. To me, a new version of Trumpism is still Trumpism and that is what Ron DeSanctimonious is trying. I'm skeptical that plays in swing states, but I'm just some schlub on a message board.
To me, GOP has only won the presidential popular vote once in the last seven elections. Their default presidential strategy has been to try and max out the vote and ignore the persuadables. The best campaigner for the GOP in the his century was George W. Bush using Compassionate Conservativism. That was a winning strategy in the suburbs and the exurbs. If Ron DeSanctimonious morphs into that, I would be less skeptical, but so far he's just another culture warrior. But he did beat a spent force in Charlie Christ.
